I support the troops, but the police chief is an "idiot"

Police apologize for arresting Sheehan and ousting a congressman's wife for wearing T-shirts to Bush's speech.

Let him know

Fax Congressman Young and respectfully let him know that his standards don't add up. His D.C. office number is 202-225-9764. Here's what I wrote:

February 2, 2006

The Honorable C. W. (Bill) Young

United States House of Representatives

2407 Rayburn House Office Building

Washington, D.C. 20515-0910

by fax: 202-225-9764

Dear Congressman Young:

I’m outraged that your wife was ejected from the House because of her t-shirt. That was stupid and indefensible.

But I'm sorry that you've said in regards to Cindy Sheehan, "I totally disagree with everything she stands for."

Everything? Does that include freedom of expression?

Sincerely,

Perfect

This so perfectly sums up today's Republican party. Free speech rights must be protected and defended! (So long as that speech is what we want to hear, otherwise, the liberals loonies should be foreced to shut up.)

I Did (Let Him Know :-)

Since I don't have access to a fax machine, I just sent the following email to Congressman Twit (Bill.Young@mail.house.gov):

Dear Congressman Young,

I share your outrage at what happened to your wife on Tuesday evening. Shame shame indeed.

What a pity, though, that your outrage doesn't extend to Cindy Sheehan, who, unlike your wife, wound up in handcuffs and in jail. Since you've stated publicly that you "disagree with everything she stands for" I have to conclude that you're against freedom of speech and freedom of expression. I, on the other hand, think Mrs. Sheehan has just as much right to express her opinion as your wife does. I would have thought a congressman sworn to uphold the constitution would feel the same way even if a person's opinion doesn't happen to agree with yours.

Shame shame indeed!

Not nearly so polite

The email I sent said he simply wasn't fit to serve in the so-called House of Representatives.

Cindy lost son too

None of the coverage of Cindy Sheehan's arrest at the SOTU speech points out the irony that one family who's son was killed by George W. in Iraq was "honored" at the speech, while Ms Sheehan was removed and arrested because she won't present a "happy-to-sacrifice-my-child-to-your-war" face for the Bush regime. Does one dead soldier count less than another? However the regime feels about her opposition to their war, shouldn't she be similarly respected for her family's loss?

I'm not sorry and neither is he

"I’m outraged that your wife was ejected from the House because of her t-shirt. That was stupid and indefensible.

But I'm sorry that you've said in regards to Cindy Sheehan, 'I totally disagree with everything she stands for.'"

Why apologize to this guy? Why is his position not stupid and indefensible? I'm tired of the people who are right trying to make the people who are wrong feel better.

The man's an idiot who has no place in American government. What's the harm in letting him know that? Why not let this anti-American thug know we won't stand for his attack on our nation's values?

I smell a rat

Am I the only person in America who sees the signature of Carl Rove on this whole incident. (We'll expel a conservative too, to prove that it really was just a dumb mistake by low level cops). I cannot believe that in 21st century America, the press allowed this to go by without some really tough questions for the Administration. How long is the press going to continue to tolerate this administration's abuse of power?

Thursday, February 2, 2006 12:00 PM

I didn't apologize

Reality-based community member? I did not apologize to the Congressman. It seems you misread my letter. "But I'm sorry that you said" means "But I regret that you said--" I thought that was obvious. And I do indeed regret that his wife was ejected. Neither woman should have been removed from the House. I was not remotely trying to make the Congressman feel better, but call him to account on his inconsistency.

The corporate mainstream news media

How long is the press going to continue to tolerate this administration's abuse of power?

As long as they continue to get high salaries and plenty of perks and identify themselves with the powerful and not with the ordinary people who are adversely affected by the powerful, they don't give a damn. Russert, Matthews, Roberts, Brooks, Miller, Woodward, Blitzer - they all sold their souls some time ago.

And O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter and others never had them to begin with.

Gainer's Modus Operandus

This Police Chief has continually arrested protestors in D.C. without cause and then apologized -- after it is all over and his goals are achieved. These arrests have resulted in large settlements against the city.

So, D.C. residents, 93% of whom voted against Bush, are subsidizing the stifling of free speech by the police chief. These same residents don't have congressional representation. And the capital police are managed by congress.

Further, the woman who ran the Park Police was run out of town for not towing the party line.

In short, this incident merely hilights the degree to which democracy has already been subverted.

I wrote to him too

Dear Congressman Young,

The shame is that the outrage you expressed at your wife's being asked to leave the State of the Union address (a shameful act indeed) doesn't include the handcuffed and jailed Mrs. Cindy Sheehan.

The shame, since you "disagree with everything she stands for" is that you must also be against the freedom of speech accorded to everyone under our great Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Further, let us not forget that Mrs. Sheehan has never once disrespected our troops; indeed, she has always held our men and women in uniform in the highest regard, beginning with her own beloved and lost son Casey and extending to each of his fellows in arms. She simply doesn't want any more of them to die.

Finally I challenge the dubious claim that Mrs. Sheehan's message "2245 Dead. How Many More?" was "political." Even a partisan supporter of the Iraq war such as yourself cannot hope to politicize "2245 Dead." This number, sir, is merely reality. A grim tally. An indisputable fact. A number, sadly, that today, is already out of date.

Sincerely,

(real name)

If it hadn't been for the Congressperson's spouse...

Well, of course, it was tantamount to a crime against humanity when Rep. Young's wife was tossed out for her pro-war t-shirt, but perfectly okay, as in "I don't care about her," when Cindy Sheehan was arrested for her anti-war t-shirt. Now, can you guess where Ms Sheehan would be today if it weren't for Ms Young and her personal connection? Hmm, I would guess trying to bail herself out. What surprised and disappointed me was that the rest of the Republicans didn't just stand right up in solidarity for hypocrisy with Rep. Young and say, "screw Cindy and let her rot in jail." What is the world coming to?!
