We'll probably never find out, but I would bet that the Bushies knew Saddam was bluffing on WMD (mainly to help keep his hold on power), and that a quick strike invasion would consequently be relatively risk-free. Had the weapons inspectors been allowed to finish their work and then come back to say "nothing there," it would have sucked all of the oxygen out of Bush's "we-must-invade-NOW" faux crisis argument.
This response is very typical of the Bush administration in its misdirection. It's pretty obvious in this case what they're doing, I hope.
Bush does not share his most sensitive intelligence, such as the President's Daily Brief. . . The response treats the PDB as if it's the only kind of unshared information that's relevant. Treating a single example as the universe of information is ridiculously disingenuous.
The Washington Post Implies That There Have Been No Findings On The Use Of Intelligence. Of course, what the Bushies would like to point out is that there have been some negative findings about whether pressure caused intelligence to be distorted, but this is only half the picture--what did the administration do with the information, distorted or not, once it got into their hot little warmongering hands?
I hope that the Post responds by re-setting the record straight; it would make for good reading.
Finally, finally it seems the majority of the American people are facing the fact that their president is a liar...and a liar in a very profound way. We're not talking about a cheap blow job here...this is war, life and death, the reputation of the country. The president can blame the Democrats and attack the Washington Post, but we the people have ceased to believe him, and all of his Karl rove inspired histrionics can't stop his tumbling house of cards. Two shaddowy elections, the Iraq war, Halliburton, Hurricane Katrina, torture as a US policy, Valery Plame: the President is at this point dragging around a ponderous Jacob Marley chain. We may be stuck with him for three more years, but that chain has dragged him down, and history will make sure he drags it forever.
What Bush and his people have to do is tell the trueth. We are adults and we can handle it. Now if he can't tell the trueth becuase it would put him and his in trouble well he has to take the fall. It is time we face the facts that our man Bush has sent us off to war on lies and that we have to all now answer for it. There is no members of Bush' family fighting this war..There will be none of my children there either.
I guess I just don't get it. Even John Kerry is still apologizing for having "voted for this war." I was there -- not in the Senate, but hunched over my morning LA Times every single day, and I do NOT remember that the Senate voted for war. The vote was to authorize the use of force if all else failed. It was not a vote to start invading Iraq on the next high tide. Which is what happened. So, why the apologizing? Just because we arm our police, doesn't mean they should start shooting anything that moves, right? Can someone fill me in... did I miss something? Do Senate Democrats really HAVE something to apologize for?
