Letters to the Editor

Dissent gone?
Funny, I don't remember Joan saying that they were banning dissenting posts. Or disagreeable posts. Or even hot tempered, knee-jerk reaction, can't think of anything nice to say posts.
from what I understand, you just have to put a name on it.
and if you can't play nice with the letters to the editor (Which, is what this is, just with much less oversight and use-of-space choices as a print magazine or newspaper) your posts will go unpublished. That seems fair. a guy who writes nasty letters to the New York Times 25 times a day doesn't get to have them published for the world to see, right? Why should Salon go out of its way to give voice to the same kind of scrawling?

I'm a Neocon? Who doesn't have their facts straight? WTF are you talking?
I'm a neocon because I don't agree with you? That's quite a stretch and you are grasping at straws.
Isn't that like calling someone anti-semitic because they disagree with Zionism? Or calling someone a bigot because they believe that local governments are more effective than massive bureaucracies?
You're free to let us know the details of the blackmail and threats you Bushites have used to accomplish that.
Or maybe the Democratic Leadership is scared because they are stupid and ignorant, just like everyone else? Ever listen to what Glenn Greenwald says about the Democratic leadership outside of his blog?
Actually, Bush is a front man for neoconservative globalists,
So what? What is this? Obvious Hour?
and there's plenty of criminal charges to share between the lot of you.
Just what crimes have "I" committed and who is my lot?
Mostly it's the smaller fish like yourself who end up getting convicted, though.
Again, WTF is going on in your "Us vs. Them" divide and conquer true believer brain?
The limb you are reaching out on is very unstable. Why don't you read my letter before you start throwing around the word "neocon". Do you even know what a neocon really is? Maybe you should read They knew they were right and learn what a neoconservative really is, instead of defining it as "bad person" that you throw out willy-nilly to everyone you disagree with and then use the label you applied to try and say it assumes criminality.

Believe in your words
If you believe strongly enough on an issue to post a comment, you should never be afraid to attach your name (or at least a consistent pseudonym) to it. Obviously there should be exceptions for subjects of a sensitive personal nature, but there's no valid reason to hide behind a wall of anonymity when discussing why you support or oppose a particular political candidate. Doing so says to me that you have some kind of ulterior motive, such as being a campaign plant or a troll, and your comments must be taken with a huge grain of salt.
Here's a good rule of thumb - if you would be embarrassed if your mother, spouse, child or best friend read your comment, you probably should have kept your thoughts to yourself.
And as extra incentive to keep myself honest in future posts, my real name is David Haynes and I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I proudly own my words.

And "blackmail". That's rich
You're free to let us know the details of the blackmail and threats you Bushites have used to accomplish that.
It's a conspiracy! What a bunch of garbage. There is a gap between your perceptions and expectations, so you blame someone else and make up a bullshit conspiracy.
Let me guess, we never landed on the moon either? The world is going to be taken over by reptillian republicans from Niribu in 2012?
You're funny.

Thank you, Joan
I know this won't eliminate drive-by trolls, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

There should be a law !!!
Hilary, yee of video game angst - are you listening?
Bush?

Christians, christians, hell.llp please... save us from ourselves...

Hooray!
Much appreciated.

Walter Map, FYI
If you want to learn what a neocon really is, so you don't sound completely ridiculous calling every who disagrees with you one, here is a start:
http://antiwar.com/radio/2008/02/04/jim-lobe-2/
I know it is a "far right" website, but here is a recent interview with Salon's Golden Boy himself, Glenn Greenwald, on the very same site. Although be warned, he doesn't fawn over the Democratic Leadership, or make up bullshit conpsiracy theories about blackmail, or heap the lavish praise on them and play apologist for their complete failures:
http://antiwar.com/radio/2008/02/12/glenn-greenwald-6/
enjoy.

Bravo!
(calcareous is pleased with this development)

For Example, Cheney and Bolton aren't neocons
They are rabid ultranationalists. Neoconservatism is a disgusting and morally bankrupt ideology, but it isn't a blanket term for "bad people on the right".

Great
I started reading the letters because people often raised great points or validated/shot down the arguments about the original post/article. Lately they've mostly been attacks against other posters. I know its largely the result of a contentious Democratic nomination battle, but eliminating anon should help.
My only other request is increased use of "editor's choice", which seems to have fallen out of favor. For me it worked as a filter for substantive arguments instead of letters that were more interaction with other letters.

It's a good start!
It's a step in the right direction. I have to say, though, that in 'Broadsheet' and 'I Like to Watch' the worst, most insane trolls are usually regular posters, not Anonymous. The sooner you get that 'Ignore' button rolled out the happier I'll be.

@-- jedimaster
You are dangerously close to the darkside...
It may be a Sith...

Narcissistic confession of my brainstorming irrationality ...which I feel really guilty for entertaining...at this point...Salon was my home, where can I go...Lost I am...Lonely… ,afraid, please save me...
A schizophrenic,
I may be handicapped…duh…?
Federal law protects me,
You can’t do shit to me,
I am a minority,
I am a bigot,
I change my mind frequently…ummm
Oh yeah every day…maybe 2, 3, 4, 5, or more times…
Sorry I am not like the rest of you Certainers…on both sides of the ‘aisle’ or is it isle ?
-
Very
bad idea. Will inhibit participation. Just what one would expect from a Barry bonds apologist.
-
Brava!
No more Anon... well done!

Whatever Works
Anything that might promote civil discourse on issues that matter over stupid trash talking is greatly appreciated.
Wouldn't it be great if the candidates for President acted that way?
