Why we're no longer allowing letters to be posted anonymously.

  • Excellent

    Very good move.

  • Darn

Just when I was going to anonymously post a "Since you asked" letter about my twin penises. Thats right, my two peni. Oh well, the world will never know. :)

  • I Wonder What the Web Would Be Like...

...if everyone HAD to use their real names to post comments. I've been going back and forth as to whether to switch to my real name. It would guarantee that I would think twice about what I wrote.

Anonymity is at the core of most problems with Web 2.0. When I think about it sometimes, it's kind of gutless to spew venom and make sweeping declarattons behind a fake name. Shouldn't one have the accountability to stand behind their words? And if someone wants to be anonymous so they can post something personal and sensitive, maybe they should reconsider putting it on the Web at all. Maybe they should be talking to friends and therapists instead of letting millions of strangers know their business.

For now, I'm still in favor of pseudonyms, but if sites like Salon wanted to calm the level of discourse down real quick, there's an easy way to do it.

  • Mixed emotions

How on earth am I supposed to rail against Salon.com for being complicit in spreading the lie that global warming doesn't exist (via Salon's dark axis with the right wing has-been hack Paglia) without the cover of "Anonymous?"

I mean, just this week I posted, anonymously of course, that Salon's hands were dripping in the blood of future generations for promoting such dubious, idiotic drivel. (The letter was promptly removed. A result, no doubt, of violating the letters' guidelines "vulger" clause. Or so one would assume)

But then on the other hand, I just might be considered cool to all my progressive friends that believe global warming to the greatest threat to mankind.

In other words, nobody cares. And get some mirrors to look into. You'll be amazed at what wasted potential looks like.

    Sincerely,

an anonymous progressive liberal that wishes Salon were the same.

    an anonymous

  • Mixed feelings but mostly disappointed.

As someone who posts with my real name and not some cutesy screenname, I haven't used the "Anonymous" option much but I'll miss it on a few threads if I continue to post. This will just force me or others to register anonymous-sounding sockpuppet accounts to achieve this effect. I think making people register and log in to post was as good as it got for you. The additional step of eliminating the "anonymous" button won't help stop abusers. It may stop people from embarrassing themselves and amusing others by accidentally posting and forgetting to check the anonymous box.

  • Wrong. Check my previous posts (rufus1133)

"Dissent gone?Funny, I don't remember Joan saying that they were banning dissenting posts. Or disagreeable posts. Or even hot tempered, knee-jerk reaction, can't think of anything nice to say posts.

from what I understand, you just have to put a name on it.

and if you can't play nice with the letters to the editor (Which, is what this is, just with much less oversight and use-of-space choices as a print magazine or newspaper) your posts will go unpublished. That seems fair. a guy who writes nasty letters to the New York Times 25 times a day doesn't get to have them published for the world to see, right? Why should Salon go out of its way to give voice to the same kind of scrawling?

I always posted as rufus1133 and was banned. Just a clever trick by joan or the salon editors to make it look like they are not killin gdissent. This site is a clinton gop propoganda site now. Hillary is supressing votes like the gop. She is using gop tactics.

And she has propoganda sites like the gop.

Just so you people know what walsh and this site has become. I was banned and silenced due to my foreful approuch, and point of viewer. I think anon was a salon employee for this very reason.

Please contact everyone who comes here and tell them they are silencing obama supporters. Tell all your blogs the same.

Good luck and god bless. I don't want to blog here. Why would I after this? How DOES have free speech in this county? Only the gop (clinton included)? Obviously the gop cult thinks this. We'll see if these cultists are americans or red coat party loyaist TRAITORS. We will see that when they do or do not go along with the will of the poeople. SAd day in america.

At the very least we can call the gop propogandists out can't we. Yes. Until this post is deleted in a couple minutes.

Good luck and god bless. This site has fallen off. I encourage everyone to disenroll.

  • It's not going to work

It really stinks that a few immature folks who don't know how to handle themselves forced Salon to change their policy, in a sense allowing these people to win. I definitely know they get satisfaction out of inflammatory comments which encourages them to continue, and also that something needed to be done. Personally I don't think getting rid of anonymous commenting will help much. It doesn't take that much effort for a person who's been warned to just sign up for a new username with a different email. It takes five seconds to apply for a new email account at hotmail or google and then another five seconds for a new username at salon. It's possible for a person to have 10 different user names from which they can continue their immature and inflammatory commenting. I think a better option would be to just allow other users to "flag" inflammatory comments and say once a particular comment gets a certain number of flags than it will be automatically removed (maybe three - 3 strikes and yer out). If a person knows that their comment is just going to get removed, than they would probably be discouraged from posting or not post at all. This would be a much better way of community self policing. It's just a thought, I think taking away anonymous posting just punishes everyone else for the stupidity of a few, thus encouraging these people even more.
