Another Vote for Also Nuking "Post Anonymously"
I see this as equivalent to the Letters to the Editor in any respectable newspaper, so total anonymity is unnecessary. Allowing the use of a screenname other than my real one is protection enough!
-
Great idea!
Thanks for welcoming me into the fold. Next step, Premium Salon! :D
-
Tip top!
And here's another vote for eliminating anonymity altogether.
-
Put the writer's name first at the top right above or below the subject line
That way it will be faster and easier to ignore the posts of those that you know you don't want to read after bad experiences with them before. No more getting blindsided a paragraph in and then realizing Oh yeah, it's (fill in the blank again), ugh, my hands feel dirty and I need to burn some sage.
Also, I agree that being able to post anonymously adds to the incivility of the entire thread. The only time I posted anonymously was because I wanted to say something mean to someone because I was in a bad mood and just felt like being nasty. If I hadn't had that option, I never would have had the nerve to behave so badly in a public place.
So I have self regulated myself and will not choose that option for any reason. I am already using a very bland non-name anyway. Which is anonymous enough.
I have been very disturbed by the way that some of us feel that they can say anything they want, as if civility were extinct. What would happen if we spoke this way to people face to face?
Well we wouldn't.
I have almost given up my subscription several times because I have felt so appalled to be part of a group that allows members or visitors to degrade the entire Voice into such wretched and stupid ugliness.

*I* read you, Brunswick
(though, perhaps, *this* is perhaps "Posting too far out to be read"). Nita Martin, you give as good as you get - and you know it.

Here's a feature I want
On an screen button that when pressed will actually kill people. In real life. Especially aVulcan and Gordon Wagner.
-
I had the same idea
...as "a reader."
Having the commenter's name appear at the top, instead of the bottom, would make it a lot easier to avoid those whose comments do not interest us.
-
not ME, Karen M
the first "i" tells you that.
-
Garry Owens...hope you see this
I wanna have your baby! (except that I'm too old and too tired from worrying about the two Marines I already raised)
But then...you know what I mean!
No, you're not an old git, and I have been looking for you, Locutus, trying to pick out your style in posts with other signatures, since you disappeared. Or so it seemed. Thankfully you are STILL around. One of the reasons I am STILL around. I would rather read your posts than nearly everything else that shows up on this site...articles included.
Sigh. What a relief, friend.

Not much of a change
I don't have strong feelings one way or the other--I'm just posting to see how the system works.
Pretty much the way it did before the change.
-
we agree on one thing, Nita
we both know that Gary Owens is a Good Guy. i, too, rejoiced at his return (in new garb) but he didn't say "you're welcome". since his absence, he's evidently made new friends. i leave it up to him - no more "citations". i will always appreciate his changing of my opinion with his sincerity - and teaching me the meaning of courage - that it's all one virtue - not, "moral courage", "physical courage", "courage in speaking out", "courage to be yourself" - just different *forms* of the same thing.

Format test
Right now, some tags are behaving differently on Salon's comments than they behave on most other sites. I'm placing this here to test the format issues that have appeared lately, and provide Salon with a sample letter showing them.
These words are marked with "em" tags, which should italicize ("i" tags) them. If they're not allowed, in the same way "a" tags aren't, they should disappear as "a" tags do instead of behaving wrongly (for example, "wrongly" is enclosed in "a href" tags in this sentence).
Trying the strong ("strong") and boldface ("b") tags, which should look the same.
- This should be a bulleted list. (My last few lists have been unbulleted.)
- This is the second item in a bulleted list.
Note: in the preview function, all appears correct except the "em" tag.
Hope this helps!

Alex...all is revealed

Another vote against Anonymity
I agree that allowing "Anonymous" postings will invite more abuse or paranoid ramblings. Count me as a vote in favor of eliminating the "anonymous" option.
If you don't believe in something (say, medical marijuana) enough to stand up for it, then you're just mouthing empty platitudes. It doesn't speak highly of your courage or your belief in something (say, medical marijuana) that you won't take the slight risk of exposing your support.
Complaining that someday someone might knock on your door and cart you away for something you post on Salon.com is ridiculous. After all, you can use a faux internet moniker, sign up for free email somewhere, and enjoy as much anonymity as you prefer.
And if you're afraid of an employer finding out you're in favor of something (say, medical marijuana) and punishing you, then I suggest following the above advice or finding a new employer. Or even better: waiting for said employer to discover you and fire you, then hiring a good lawyer and spending the rest of your life living off said employer's settlement of such a blatant violation of your rights.
(FTR: I am pro medical marijuana, and not afraid to let anyone and everyone know it.)

calgodot, i don't think *political* speech is what it's for
it's for social issues (like incest) that *no one* wants to admit to - or racist feelings that the public ought to know about, but aren't accepted. as for me, i'm in favor of *non* medical marijuana (like, to get high) but can't afford it. [however, i know as someone who is unemployed, and unemployable, even at my usual rate of minimum plus one - and who has the luxury of a loving wife who'll stay with me till death do us part, i'm in a hell of a better position to spout off than others]
