Why is Palin lying about state ethics probes? She says Alaska spent "millions" probing "frivolous" issues. The cost was far less and some complaints were serious

  • May as well ask why a dog barks

Why is Palin lying about this? Why does she lie about anything? Because she lies about everything. That's who she is.

  • Wrong about Sarah Palin's future

She has a very bright future with the Republican Party. She is a mirror of their hatreds and self-portrayal of victimhood.

As long as she plays the victim card, she will be a hit with the Republican base and collect millions of dollars in speaking fees to tell the Party Faithful how much she is a victim.

  • Sarah the Grifter is incapable of the truth

It's really amazing. She'll get away with it because she's a Republican, but she carries the stench of absurdity wherever she goes. She's off to fleece the rubes in the Lower 48, and we gonna have to watch every woeful minute of it. She's a political vampire, and even if God loved me enough to have her (or Newt) be the nominee in 2012, the resulting 60-40 Obama win still wouldn't even faze her. She wouldn't even notice.

  • It's a definitional thing

"Frivolous" is actually shorthand for "something contrary to my own personal interests that I don't want to have to substantively address" in R-speak.

  • she can't not lie

Sarah Palin is a habitual, compulsive, unrepentant, liar. (I hope Senator Franken some day dedicates a chapter to her in an updated edition of "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.")

Last summer I came across a story about Palin from waaaaaaay back when- before she was mayor of Wasilla, but truly a simple "hockey mom" and homemaker. The story was about a celebrity (I forget who, Streisand?) peddling a book, and making a stop in Alaska. Palin was waiting in line to get her copy of the book signed, and was interviewed by her local paper. Palin gushed about Alaskans needing glamor, and freely admitted that she'd told her husband she was shopping, instead of telling him she was hoping to meet a celebrity.

I remember thinking "Wow. She lied to her husband. About something so completely trivial. And then told a reporter she'd lied. How stupid is this woman?" She has become so used to lying, so unfamiliar with telling the truth, she can not stop lying.

As for why this particular aspect (and let's cue readerreader's telling us how this is actually brilliant and sexy in 3 ... 2 .... 1 ... ) of her borderline personality isn't discussed more critically in the media, I couldn't guess.

Seriously, yeah, Joan I watched you make this case today on MSNBC. Spot-on.

  • Sure you've seen her before.

On Jerry Springer and Dr Phil, etc. Also, as was noted earlier, this is about the ultimate "dog bites man" kind of story. Lying Republicans? Unpossible!

  • It's OK

...that Sarah Palin is an shameless unadulterated liar, because:

    Get ready for it....

President Obama "refuses" to reveal his "real" birth certificate.

Or some other illogical comparative nonsequitur.

Here they come, in droves: Cue R2 and Virtue.

I look forward to the deconstruction thereof.

  • Palin as a Community Activist

    Ms. Walsh...PALEEASE

Let Ms. Palin become a community activist for which she does not need a title, as she says...after a few years of this type of public service, my goodness - how far can she go? She has now and will always have more influence on more americans than any blogger or columnist (dowd). you are just going to have to deal with it.

  • Substance abuse

Thanks for the clarification on the probes. That's a very handy list to have around. Of course the fastest way to avoid ethics challenges is to behave ethically. You would hope the party of personal responsibility would think of that, but NOOOOOO, not in this "partisan age".

BTW, this passage from Through the Looking Glass gets more useful every day:

"When I use a word, Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less. The question is, said Alice, whether you can make words mean so many different things. The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, which is to be master thats all."

Oh Sarah - that explains a lot.

  • A common error by people who think they're smart.

They neglect to take into account, other people are smart too. In their planning and scheming, they literally forget to take into account that other people may have brains, even more brains. A common trait I believe amongst people who make this common error, is also to blame those who've had the awful temerity to ruin your plans by failing to be stupid. It gets taken very personally.

  • Barristas at the frontlines

On Hardball, you likened her flouncing to that of a departing Starbucks' employee's. You know, it may be true that Starbucks' employees don't stay around all that long, but they count amongst those that don't get a hell of a respect these days, that count amongst those that are (to many) jokes owing to the nature of their profession, not just because of what they make of their profession.

It is probably best to avoid likening those we love to hate most, to people working at minimum wage jobs. We don't want to contribute to a cultural sphere which cues our "untouchables" to seriously consider military service, just so they can finally find themselves employed in something that guarantees them respectful handling. We don't want to be in a position where we really do now have the blood of some of society's weakest, most vulnerable, on our hands.

  • She says whatever she feels like saying at any given moment.

I believe she cannot help it. She seems so self centered that she must think it is all about her. I have known people in every day life just like her. They are called sociopaths or pathological liars. In politics she is just called an opportunist. The things that she says would embarrass almost anyone else but she actually believes she is right and that she sounds intelligent and street smart. Sad and pathetic.

  • Pathological liars

I obviously don't know Palin personally, so I am not pronouncing her a pathological liar, but having dated one, she definitely shares his characteristics.

My ex-boyfriend lied about so many stupid, trivial things, it was unbelievable. I was in college, and was completely naive and unprepared for someone like him. The most ridiculous example I can cite is when I lent him $100, and he told me he repaid me by depositing $100 into my checking account. I accidentally found the deposit slip, and it was made out for $95. I asked him about the discrepancy, and he swore, swore, that he had deposited $100, saying the bank had made the mistake, despite the fact that the deposit ticket was in his handwriting. He got so upset I finally abandoned the conversation.

It's obviously a ridiculous thing to lie about. I wouldn't have cared one bit if he was $5 short. I obviously would have found out about the $5 discrepancy when I balanced my checkbook. You would think he'd have stopped lying when faced with the deposit ticket. But pathological liars aren't wired that way.

This guy lied about so many things, and most of them were truly inconsequential. I was seeing a therapist at the time, and I asked him about the lying. He said that pathological liars often don't know that they're even lying. I couldn't comprehend that; how can you not know you're lying?

(It's interesting: I just looked up pathological liar, and found it's often associated with narcissistic personality disorder or histrionic personality disorder, which is closely related.)

Coping with such a person is very, very frustrating. Imagine having a relationship with someone when you don't believe a word they say. Toward the end, if he told me he had gone to the store, I would automatically think, maybe you did, maybe you didn't. That's how much they lie.
