Sarah Palin resigning as Alaska governor

The Wasilla soap opera just gets weirder as Palin complains critics are "picking apart a good point guard"

The letters thread is now closed.

She uses a lot of sports analogies....

but then she just walks away from the game.

Wow...that says it all.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

But,it seems that if you are a pitbull with lipstick, when the going gets tough---you just take your ball and run away.

@Joan: Below is just a smattering of the hateful and/or misogynistic quotes inspired by what you have referred to here as the “rolling hilarity” of the Palin "meltdown." And you’re different than what you accuse O’Reilly of how?

“There's One Word That Explains The Sarah Palin Phenomenon In - Its Entirety. It rhymes with ‘Punt.’ And it's starts with ‘C.’ And it's pronounced ‘Cunt.’”

“Scream in hell you psycho bitch. I speak for half of America when I say you should die of nuclear AIDS in barrel of your own children's blood. Fuck you and the polar bear you rode in on.”

“…the lady's marriage, by an apparently hastily arranged elopement, took place only 8 months before this delivery .”

“I question now whether she's actually ANYone's mother, since people with balls don't usually also have vaginas.”

“Sarah. Palin. November. 2009. Nude. Playboy”

"Is Sarah having a secret affair with Levi?"

"Is it possible someone other than the "First Dude" is Trig's father?"

“Todd wants a divorce, Sarah or even Willow is pregnant…”

“She misses the clothes, the stylists, the $400 false eyelashes…”

“Please let her do a Playboy photo spread.”

“…methinks some news report is gonna come out that Trig isnt her baby or that she was caught banging some dude other than her husband..or that her husband was caught banging Greta Van SucksomeShit.”

“Seven words that demonstrate precisely why Palin isn't qualified to be President --The world needs more Trigs, not fewer.”

"The world needs MORE Trigs, not less." In other words, brain damaged children."

“No wonder you like her. She most likely gives you a stiffy.”

“I find it hard to believe we've heard the last of this narcissistic shitstain.”

Calif Mike was kinder than myself in his assessment of this thread, when he wrote to you: “Joan, I am not blaming you for their hate letters, but please think about this: if your readers are the orchestra, then you are a conductor of this orchestra.“

So I ask you again, Joan -- you're different than what you accuse of O'Reilly how?

PS: Delete posts much, Joan?

@Mezbourian -- O'Bama does not look forward to a Palin debate

cuz he knows he'd get his clock cleaned. Look at the speech she gave from the heart with just notes. Not needing a word-by-word teleprompter like the Bamster.

Which Airport Bathroom was sullied ?

Either Palin has had an affair in a Airport Bathroom in Anchorage or She is going to gather Her flock for a Presidential Bid in 2012. Either way, I just want Her to go away.

Sarah Palin, PTA mom

Over the years, I have seen outsiders come into meetings and ignite the crowd with an indignant speech and then get themselves elected to lead the charge against the people then in power. I've seen mad moms do that in PTA organizations, where they roast the teachers and administration, get elected as the savior, then completely wreck the organization, demoralize the teachers and administrators, and then quit when they find out there are actual problems that they can't handle.

Sound familiar?

@Fibrobetsy -- Sarah's gonna gitcha

cuz Christians don't look kindly on non-jokes like yours.

Did she really need to....

slam the governors of the other 49 states by her "lame duck" analogy? Well, of course she did...it's Palin. She is such a divider.

She is playing the ultimate victim card. Poor, poor Palin.

The people of Alaska have seen very little of her since the election as Palin has opted for life in the spotlight, so she has some nerve suggesting that other governors are takin' a paycheck for traveling around the globe while she is workin' hard for the people.

Say what? She has been gone for weeks and just got home.

Wouldn't she want the support of other governors if she plans to run in 2012? Why slam them?

@red_gti2000

I truly hope your sentiments are bluster and posturing -- which is fine by me, we deserve to express our disappointment -- however, no matter how much I disagreed with the previous administration's behavior, I never hoped to exact revenge on my fellow Americans. I hope you will reconsider your wish -- as someone else said, especially on this rather special day.

We too easily lose sight of what we have in common when we focus on the little things that make us different. When we hold on too tight to those little things, we resort to mischaracterizing the little things other's believe. Look past the petty and insignificant and embrace what we share.

There is a difference between being concerned and being negative, e.g., after initially supporting war in Iraq because of the 'presented facts on the ground', I became 'concerned' that it was not the right thing to do and not in our best interests. I never became negative and hoped we would fail or suffer more loss of American lives to show how wrong-headed that misadventure has been.

For all of the economy's troubles -- the result of more than a decade of slow fundamental decline -- I dearly hope, for all American's sake, a recovery and not a cold dish of revenge.

Just extending an open hand...

@Trainman -- Sarah was stifled by the McCain camp

and told which interviews and what to say and not come out swinging. Then they tried to embarrass her by asking who is the sultan of Uzbekastan, as they did with Bush. And Katie Koran and Charlie Gibson had fun with her. But McCain restrained her.

Obvious McCain did not want to win, just like Bush 41.

We will now witness the real Sarah.

And the libs are terrified.

In '10 they'll start to lose control of Congress.

Then USA will be reinstated to normalcy after Sarah wins in '12. ACORN be damned.

But don't take my word for it. Hide and watch.

@DurianJoe (with a star) -- The stars mean Salonista Communism

or something like that. One Salonista wrote they do not like ads. I guess they don't get the pop-ups and sidebars I do.

Ugly Rhetoric and Hate Speech

While I agree that the level of vritiol being flung in contemporary political discourse is unseemly, I think prognostications of society's decline are premature.

Ugly campaign rhetoric is as old as our Republic. For example:

Rumors about Jefferson's fathering a child with one of his enslaved Africans were first published in 1802 by his political rival, James Callender.

Ten years before Cleveland's presidency, he fathered an illegitimate child with Maria Halpin. The child was placed for adoption. During the 1884 campaign, his opponents popularized a chant of, "Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?"

During the 1828 campaign, Andrew Jackson was called a jackass by his opponents. Jackson attempted to resignify the insult by using a jackass as a symbol (this was the forerunner of the donkey used to symbolize the Democratic Party). Jackson's wife was also accused of bigamy--and though the accusations were true, at the time of her marriage Rachel Jackson was unaware of its illegality, and the situation was rectified immediately. Further, the event had occurred nearly 30 years prior to the campaign. Some blame the pain of these accusations contributed to Rachel's death in December of 1828.

During the 1860 campaign, Abraham Lincoln was incessently mocked for his humble origins; he was referred to as a "clown" and a "bumpkin;" his physical courage was questioned; his clothes and haircut were subjects of derisive jokes; and he was ridiculed as just plain ugly.

My point is that vicious campaign and political rhetoric is nothing new. While that doesn't make it any more palatable, attempting to ascertain its party origin is futile--vitriol was common long before either of our current parties existed.
