That Mark Sanford's latest excruciating stream of consciousness — a tape of which was painfully played on Keith Olbermann's show tonight — made Bill Clinton's public remarks on Monica Lewinsky look positively elegant and dignified by comparison.
And ooh, yes, please, hire Froomkin!
The gift that just keeps on giving
Seriously you just can't equate the rightist fall from grace with any Democrat.
The Christian Right insists that they and only they hold the religious truth and the keys to salvation and with that rhetoric they deny equal rights to a class of people then they in the next breath confess to a marrige destroying dalliance with their "soul mate"
Can it become anymore ironic, is this script written by "The Onion"
The rightist rollcall of religious shame is extensive: Cunnnigham steals, Vitter cavorts with hookers, Ensign sleeps around, Craig cruises for gay sex in an airport bathroom, and now Sanford rushes off to his Argentine mistress...
Might be about time for the alleged christians of the right to accept that the only promise being kept by Promise Keepers is to enrich rightist politicians who then spend the money and booze and broads
With all the hoop made of Sanford, Democrats can lay claim to a bit of hypocricy themselves. They could have taken the high road, but since when have they ever done that?
Oh, that must be why he rejected federal stimulus money and pontificated about family values. As for Democrats "taking the high road," it wasn't Democrats who decided to scrap the "gentlemen's agreement" to ignore the private indiscretions of politicians. That agreement that benefitted both Republicans (Bush 41) and Democrats (JFK). The Republicans decided that it was worth abandoning that unspoken pact in order to get Bill Clinton any way they could. And now they have to live with the consequences. Sorry, pal, but paybacks are hell.
Dude
2 words "Promise Keepers" plus 2 more "Gay Marriage"
Got it?
When I wear my religiosity on my back in big letters then I must "walk the talk" - simple really.
Sanfird and Ensign wore the religious credentials writ large and pummeled those failed to meet their standards (impeachment anyone) then they fall prey to sexual urge..
Yep its the irony and hypocrisy all rolled up but mostly schadenfreude to see a man who cared so little for others being made to suffer just a tiny bit as much as his average states citizen
But why is the right so epic fail at walking the talk?
Exactly!
Mark Sanford has lied to his constituency regarding his gubernatorial behavior. Bye.
Mark Sanford has (allegedly) used state funds for at least one of his trips to Argentina. See ya.
Mark Sanford went AWOL without letting his staff or his Lt Gov know where he was or how to reach him... for five freakin' days! Don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord - in his obvious attempt to reincarnate King David - split ya!
And he is being very cruel to his wife with every new revelation he has decided to confess. I predict Mark Sanford will be a divorced man, and his mistress will drop him like a NY Minute when he is no longer governor.
[Sanford] rejected federal stimulus money and pontificated about family values.
Liberal in drag: The liberal is the affair, the drag is the "rejected federal stimulus money and pontificated about family values". I'm not making this up, a Salon columnist wrote that.
the christian right is neither.
Camille Paglia, or the Wingnut?
My fondesty hope is for the Republicans to put up a Palin/Sanford ticket for President/VP in 2012.
The oddest part is that this wish puts (Liberal!) me in solid agreeent with 95% of Republicans in America.
I take my vows seriously--in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer--but I'm not famous and have no power except as a partner in my own household. I think it those that are empowered by the electorate, republican and democratic alike, sometimes grow into a sense of entitlement that transcends the man we put in office. I agree, life is hard, and marriage can be too. But if Sanford can't keep a vow, especially in his public professions of faith as a personal and policy driver, then he's a liar, a promise breaker, and should not ever be in the public trust again.
... their fruit "forbidden."
'nuff said.
Screw Sanford. (Or, no, actually... well, you know what I mean.) Let's talk more about Dan Froomkin.
I would promise to subscribe to Salon if they pick up Dan Froomkin's column, but I already played that card for something else, so that wouldn't really be very dramatic. I see the other letter writers who have mentioned him are in the same boat.
So, Editor, what's the scoop? Is there a chance?
Eliot Spitzer is (rightfully) no longer a governor.
Dear Joan:
I realize that it's an attempt to be even-handed, but referring to both Sanfords as "Sanford" in the same paragraph puts an awful strain on your readers.
Best,
NeckRoad
Did it better. Although France is the opposite of the South.
Please make sense of the notion that Sanford used bad judgment in turning down stimulus funds when he is obviously incapable of using any good judgment! Truthfulness and honesty to one's family doesn't seem to be that high of a bar to set before promising to be truthful and honest to your constituents. Regarding Hilary, my bet would be that she might have achieved her political ambitions if she would have put Bill to the curb and proved that women don't have to settle for such disrespect and humiliation.
THANK YOU, JOAN, for being the first (that I know of) to even mention this gutsy young woman and the savage inequalities with regard to which she was so eloquent. Sanford is an evil scumbag - "Christian" my aching back. He and his stinking rich shrew of a wife can kill each other slowly for all I care.
I hope he resigns, gets a divorce and then moves to Argentina.
Ugghh, enough with this guy.
