Mark Sanford's slow-motion crackup Thanks for sharing, Governor. Now please take a cue from Norm Coleman, and go away

  • Congratulation, Republicans

... his staff was caught Twittering that Bauer had to be prevented from becoming governor: "Cannot allow a disaster to be replaced with catastrophe,"

That's a great team you put in office. Good work.

  • It's not Andre, he's a nonentity.

SC Senate Pro Tem Glenn McConnell (R-Charleston) is the most powerful legislator in the SC General Assembly. Should Sanford resign, then McConnell would be required by the state constitution to succeed Bauer as lieutenant governor. Something McConnel has zero intention of doing. McConnell has had his hands full w/ his "family values" colleagues since this nonsense got started trying to keep his Republicans together.

As for the Sanfords? Who cares... they're Christianists, not Christians. After today's display, I'll be surprised if she keeps those ill-mannered brats in the Palmetto State one more minute-leverage being what it is.

  • Why this?

With all that's important going on in the world, I counted on Joan doing one of two things on her return from her breakdown over O'Reilly-- Michael Jackson, or Sanford. How right I am. Sanford, if you don't remember, is the liberal in drag.

  • Riddle: how many times can a Repub voter see scandal before tiring of the party?

Answer: Bean dip. (The question wasn't valid - the dead-enders never see a scandal they can't blame on Democrats.)

I wonder why he didn't stay in Argentina. I would have.

Now that Sanford's been taken care of, back the the important question. :-)

Will we see Froomkin's byline on Salon?

  • Advice from the Godfather

Don Corleone said it best. A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man.

But why focus on Sanford? Let's talk about what it means for South Carolina to not have a "favorite son" hog the 2012 presidential primary. That helps conservative leaning hopefuls.

By the way, there's a really cute story on NBC.com tonight. One of those hopefuls reportedly predicted a win in a "run" against Obama. When you hit the link, you see the story is actually for a runner's magazine, and is about a hypothetical marathon contest rather than politics.

Why would NBC promote such a puff piece? Probably, there's some mutual back scratching after a Today Show appearance which simultaneously helped spike Letterman in his opening bout with Conan. In last week's ratings, Dave is now in third place behind both Conan and Nightline, with Conan beating him by a comfortable half million viewers and in target demographics.

Of course, I can't be too hard on Sanford, politically speaking. He set some blocks and bruised his nose badly on the education stimulus opposition mentioned by Joan. That gave others some open field running with less controversy on lighter stimulus objections.

Ah, politics. I've never enjoyed it so thoroughly.

  • time to go

i wrote it before on another thread but it's worth repeating -- and joan, you got it absolutely right. it's really extraordinary that a man who lied about his whereabouts, and then lied in his so-called heartfelt confession about same, is continuing in his role as governor of a state in this country. and this is coming from a person who's currently suffering from the fallout of another governor who "couldn't keep it in his pants" -- i.e. eliot spitzer -- but this breach of conduct strikes me as far worse.

the scariest part of it is this guy seems genuinely unstable. forget midlife crisis -- this is an absolute dark night of the soul. he appears to have lied not only to his wife, his staff, and his constituents, but also his "spiritual adviser," who seems to have held his feet to the fire many times over the years about possible infidelities (creepy in its own right, as the story opens a spooky window on the spiritual "bootcamp" in which sanford participated). and again as you point out, in the end it's all about him.

I wouldn't want this guy cleaning my pool, let alone running my state. he needs serious counseling and time to clear his head and his heart.

Damn! you beat me to the punch! I was gonna give a prediction myself: was gonna say that any minute now we'd get the first letter whining that 'of all the important issues in all the important capitols of the world, we got this one.'

Next time I'll try to be quicker. And SoberInput - congrats on your accurate prediction!

  • @debadawink

eliot spitzer -- but this breach of conduct strikes me as far worse.

Frequenting a prolific prostitute aces cheating with a beautiful journalist anyday. Yeah, the beautiful journalist may have had many boyfriends, but probably not 10,000.

  • Helping to change the subject..... now

The letter's thread in Tracy's recent Iran article closed before I could post this link:

    http://tehranbureau.com/feminist-waves-iranian-green-tsunami/

There was some discussion in that thread as to exactly what role women are playing in the 'green revolution', and if we could call it feminism, or if it was just standard lib'ral delusion (like that word, its making the rounds) and taking credit for things that don't exist.

It's hard to judge the veracity of anything coming out of Iran, but this article would suggest some sort of organic home grown women's movement. Tasty, I would think, and y'all should check it. Never would have thought twitter would be useful for something.

  • Too much information.

I don't need to know Gov Mark Sanford committed adultery in heart, rather than with other bodily organs, with women he met on vacations before he found his "soul mate" in Miss Argentina.

There may be good reasons for he and the Missus to try to make a go of it, principally their four young children. But the chances of that happening dim every time he feels compelled to make another revelation.

Women as "gold diggers" is certainly a stereotype for which there are no shortage of examples. But men, too, can select a mate based on the professional and lifestyle door she opens. My grandmother used to tell me how she and the neighbor would pelt his older brother with anything they could get their hands as he left for invitation only dances, hoping to dirty his formal whites. Sure enough, he married a rich girl from the right background and they relied on booze lubrication to get through life.

Sanford had political ambitions and married a woman who could further them. She may have been attracted to the life his success as a public official could provide. Possibly he tired of all that.

Recently I watched the movie "Outrage" about closeted politicians and the politics of homophobia. The only outed politician who was reflective at all about his life was former NJ Gov McGrevey (sp). He said his closeted existence aided his political career in that both relied on deceiving people about his true intentions to win their trust. He got better and better at it but once he was outed, he realized there was another way to live.

Sanford may have had that epiphany in Buenos Aires. But he needs to resign and resume a private life in which he should focus on how to do the best he can by those he has made conflicting representations to, namely his kids, his wife and his girlfriend.
