I'm debating Liz Cheney on CNN

About whether closing Guantánamo endangers national security. Guess which side I'm on.

The letters thread is now closed.

This should be fun.

Go get her Joan.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 03:45 PM

Best of luck Joan

I don't think you'll need it. You always seem well prepared when I see clips on the intertubes of your guest appearances.

Since we are all very well aware of the memes that Ms. Cheney is likely to advance, I hope you're given the opportunity to deconstruct them head-on. She's been largely unchallenged for her falsehoods and distortions, so I'm very much hoping you can put her back on her heels when she trots out her predictable talking points.

Go get her!

How do you

have the patience to do this? It would drive me mad to

deal with people who seemingly with full awareness simply

lie and refuse to acknowledge the facts. Do you think of yourself

as simply bearing witness of a sort to the facts (because who

knows who might be listening and given pause?)--or how do you think of it? How do you motivate yourself to do this (to try to have a discussion with someone who refuses to participate in a rational discussion?). You have my sympathies.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:00 PM

I know you don't need cheerleaders...

...but feel free to kick her dumb ass all over the studio.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:02 PM

This should be a no brainer...

..since Liz Cheney doesn't use hers. Will she be wearing an earpiece so that her daddy can tell her what to think and say? Can't wait to see this ! Send her home crying, Joan.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:07 PM

"Guess which side I'm on?"

The terrorists?

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:10 PM

Doh! So much for sarcasm!

My previous remark was supposed to have fake html sarcasm tags around my remark, but they didn't display. I expect some thin-skinned readers to jump on me for it. :)

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:21 PM

Joan ask her..

Why she and her dad are running around defending torture?

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:27 PM

I don't watch TV

So you'll have have to tell me if Liz makes little villainous smirks like her insufferable spouse...

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:30 PM

How is this different from your normal strategy?

Something is a mistake? Blame Bush.

Obama screw the pooch on some issue? Must be because of Bush.

Hey, you did notice that he's not in office anymore, right?

Now excuse me while I google to find all the quotes from Joan saying "Stop blaming Clinton for everything!". Pretty sure they're abundant from Jan 21, 2001 onward.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:33 PM

Joan,

I am sure you wrote this little piece in a hurry. It’s the only way I can explain this paragraph:

“Actually, I think I have the easy job. If closing Gitmo is a mistake, blame the Bush-Cheney administration, because President Bush promised to close it in 2006. It's a non-issue.”

What is your point? Bush promised to close Gitmo, but didn’t. Obama, on the other hand, ordered to close it.

In any case, if it is a ”non-issue,” why discuss it at all?

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:46 PM

Maybe you can ask her...

...why nothing other than being the spawn of Dick Cheney gives her special status as a conservative spokesperson.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:54 PM

Oh.

Excuse me. She's the spawn of the big dick..is that it? The offspring of the thing? I did not know that.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 04:59 PM

But I'll tell ya this..

Sounds like some real must see TV..

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:04 PM

It might be mean, but...

Ask her, if it is not torture, if she would consent to having a grandchild waterboarded as a punishment for lying.

Then ask, which grandchild.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:12 PM

The wrong side.

That was easy.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:17 PM

uh, no offense to Joan but

couldn't they have gotten someone who doesn't consistently get their clock cleaned by the likes of Pat Buchannan? Liz Cheney is a cold calculating sociopath, the left needs someone who isn't afraid to call her what she is, and the person to do it aint Joan Walsh.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:29 PM

Sorry, Joan, you're not up to it

I realize that I'm writing this as you're about to take on Cheney, so I guess I'm just venting and predicting, but if your past TV debates are any indication, you just don't have the temperament for the fight. You're too nice. You sit there with a smile on your face, you wait your turn, you patiently explain your position. You're never going to gain anything against people like Liz Cheney, Pat Buchanan, and any other rightwing ideologues who ignore reason, fact and principle as they pretend to debate when they're really just spouting talking points. And I'm looking right now at your smiling face on CNN. Joan, you may have the smarts and the principles, but you just don't have the balls-to-the-wall mentality to debate the scum of the GOP.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:35 PM

ask Liz Cheyney

Did her dad, Dick Cheney, ever have a bumper sticker that said, "My Child is a Student of the Draw and Quarter at McLean High School"?

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:36 PM

You're right, Joan

Being the wishy-washy liberal who gets to be beaten up on by the lying sociopathic right-winger is a very easy job. Trust me, Liz isn't shaking in her boots.

If there was the slightest chance you'd actually call her on her shit effectively, she'd never have agreed to do the spot.

Hope the pay's good.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:37 PM

correction

I spelled Liz's last name Cheyney -- while I *could* have spelled it Cheney, I *meant* to spell it Chainey -- as in the Tom Swifty, "Shackle the prisoners to the wall," said Dick Chaoney.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:47 PM

I stand corrected

Joan, I apologize. You did much better than I thought you would, and you were much harder on the vile Cheney than you have been on Pat Buchanan on Hardball. Good to see. I especially appreciated that you refused to let her try to claim the moral high ground and the claim to be the only one concerned about keeping America and Americans safe. And I like your little toss about being in SF!

I know it didn't come up this time, but I would dearly love for someone, especially a journalist, to ask Liz "how I love nepotism" Cheney, how exactly does she know what those classified torture memos reveal, since she did not have the security clearance to see those memos. If she did see those memos, she and Daddy Warbucks should be in for some indictments. If she didn't see those memos, then she really should STFU. IMNSHO.

Apologies again, Joan.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 05:55 PM

Yikes Joan

That was kind of crazy and Cambell Brown seemingly has no sense of time! I don't know though Liz is kind of a crazy woman. Nice job though it seemed like two against one though did it make you feel that way.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 06:11 PM

From Joan Walsh

Thanks, CTLiberal, I appreciate that. I thought I did good.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 06:11 PM

From Joan Walsh

Oh, and I know my father would be proud.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 06:13 PM

watched it...

and you got smoked.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 06:42 PM

From Joan Walsh

Thanks, stozzel!

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 07:42 PM

I'm a fan but...

It wasn't one of your best. Oh, as far as substance you were all over her, but it was incredibly obvious that you don't like her. Can't blame you there but it kind of looked like you had your hackles up, ready for blood. When you debate Buchanan it mostly has the look of two pros that disagree but respect each other. There was none of that here. Also, the Campbell Brown format sucks. How can any debate have substance with so little time to talk? You could barely get a thought in other than the fact that respected military people agree with you. Everything else was just clipped due to the rigid format.

She showed her lack of class by making the same stupid remarks about big cities and her inability to find any common ground with you. But she's expected to be petty and to show personal contempt for people who disagree with her.
