Can we not refer to him as "Rush"?
I don't understand this tendency to call people we don't respect
by their first names. The Bush administration did the same thing
with Saddam Hussein. Fox news does the same thing with then-Senator
Obama during the election. Use of these public figures' first names
is a way of making them sound less significant and more hokey. It
offers up the illusion that the reporter (or Op-Ed columnist) is
all buddy-buddy with the person in question, and robs them of some
of their dignity.
Besides, and more importantly, I was expecting this to be a story about fans of the well-known Canadian Prog-Rock band. Don't let that lying blowhard steal their name recognition.
