  • After hearing the WW III Comment I thought

Its time NOW for this administration to go. THis kind of behavior will only unite the world against us. The piece on Frontline last night was just another reminder of how the folks operate. Impeach.

  • Put Impeachment back on the table ... NOW !

And all this on top of the fact that Bush is deploying radar and missile systems in Putin's backyard.

Bush is a(n) (pick your derrogatory remark).

  • Gregory's Questioning is Stupid

What is the point of asking Bush about an event in 1981? I actually like that Bush was smart enough to see that the question was framed as a "what did you think then?" instead of "what do you think now?" He should have gone on a 5 minute wistful monologue on the dry weather in Midland. Make those jackass "gotcha journalists" sit through boring story after boring story and then go have a beer with Cheney.

As for the WW3 comment, I think most people would think that Iran dropping a nuclear weapon on Israel would lead to a really bad situation with an Israeli nuclear counter strike. The use of the term "World War 3" is a metaphor for nuclear war. I suspect that if India and Pakistan came close to a nuclear exchange again, then people would also call that WW3. I think it is silly for someone to argue that Putin would think that Bush is referring to a nuclear exchange between the US and Russia.

  • one other thing to mention...

Putin is hopping mad that the US decided to abandon the ABM treaty a while back and now is planting more nukes in his backyard (the servile Poles and Czechs cant seem to please the US enough). Of course it ridiculous assertion that they are being planted to neutralize threat from Iran, as if Iran didn't already have enough reasons to get bombed by the West.

The charade that Bush didnt talk about was the Israeli Palestinian dog and pony show he is setting up in Annapolis. Everytime we get ready to bomb a majority Muslim country, we put on this comedy about trying to help the Palestinians in the hope that the Arab street wont go bonkers...

  • We're screwed

"it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."

How long do we think we can contain "knowledge"? Do we think we are in charge of what goes into the brains of Iranian scientists? I hate the idea of a nuclear-armed Iran as much as the next person (assuming the next person is against that sort of thing), but it's clear they're gonna get it. It's like thinking 75 years ago we could prevent a country from aquiring the aeroplane. In a generation every government with a high-speed internet connection and a spare billion $ will have a nuclear bomb. See subject line.

  • Sensitive Pat Buchanan

Boy that Pat Buchanan--what a sensitive guy!!! I don't mean that facetiously,I really believe Pat can relate to Craigs bathroom adventure and the way He has almost subconciously held his true feelings inside himself all these torturous years. You see Pat has had that very same experience and truth be known is still hiding affectionate feelings--FOR RICHARD NIXON!!!!! • Putin is concerned that Start I which is rather kind to them is due to bilaterally expire in 2009

And since, as I'm sure all the Saloniks know that IRBM's are exceedingly cost effective to the Russians vs ICBMs, the economic/strategic position of the Russians after 2009 starts to look pretty bleak. In fact since the end of the 3CP you've seen the largest erosion of strategic buffers for the Russians in perhaps several hundred years (apart from WW2). So the Russians would love to offload some of that burden to the Iranians.

In other words, and again as I'm sure you already know, the Russians have a window of opportunity that lasts until Start I expires, to project strategic power.

  • Ancient History?

What is the point of asking Bush about an event in 1981?

The point is that there's some powerful people in the Administration who basically want the US to do to Iran right now what the Israelis did to Saddam's nuclear reactor in 1981.

How Bush stands on Israel's action does have a direct bearing on his position regarding a possible US strike against Iran.

As for being busy with his family in Midland in 1981...well, he has been Commander in Chief of the armed forces of the US for the past six and half years. So we might just assume that at some point Bush might have been briefed on possible pre-emptive attacks on countries with potential nuclear capabilities, and maybe--just maybe--the Osirak strike was discussed as a precedent. At least that's what real grownup-type people do when they discuss strategy.

So, on second thought, let's not assume that. Because we're not really dealing with a grownup here.

  • well for one thing

The previous week the Iranians tried to bomb Osirak as well. They used two of their McD Phantom II's and unfortunately their bombs rolled off the reactor shell. They traded some of their planning data with the Israelis who simply executed a better plan. One that worked.

One wonders what you furious Israel hating Liberals would say had your friend, Iran been successful in bombing Osirak. As Elvis Costello says "It's a dangerous game/That comedy plays/Sometimes it tells you the truth/Sometimes it delays, it."

  • Rachel Maddow Does, indeed, rock

She handles herself well and does not let others shout her down. Nor does she try to talk abouve others.

She has her talking points down and stays on them.

  • Elvis also said "Oliver's Army is here to stay."

He was right about that, too.

  • Joan Walsh

Joan, Just needed to tell you what a great job you do on televison. Rachel Maddow is another person who knows what she is talking about and makes her views clear and concise. We finally have people on these shows that make sense. I'm glad the bigwigs on cable are regularly bringing you back to talk about the mess we're in in Iraq and the country. I hope that people like you and Rachel will bring a bigger voice to the concerns of people in this country. President Bush lied us into war in Iraq and at least you are invited to debate people from the right like Pat Buchanan now because you weren't invited when Bush talked about war with Iraq six years ago. Hopefully we can stop Bush from doing more damage to the country by not going to war with Iran.
