Parsing the president's reckless remarks about Russia, Israel and Iran. Plus: End the Larry Craig pity party!
  • Ancient History?

What is the point of asking Bush about an event in 1981?

The point is that there's some powerful people in the Administration who basically want the US to do to Iran right now what the Israelis did to Saddam's nuclear reactor in 1981.

How Bush stands on Israel's action does have a direct bearing on his position regarding a possible US strike against Iran.

As for being busy with his family in Midland in 1981...well, he has been Commander in Chief of the armed forces of the US for the past six and half years. So we might just assume that at some point Bush might have been briefed on possible pre-emptive attacks on countries with potential nuclear capabilities, and maybe--just maybe--the Osirak strike was discussed as a precedent. At least that's what real grownup-type people do when they discuss strategy.

So, on second thought, let's not assume that. Because we're not really dealing with a grownup here.
