Ugh
When I read that phrase where Gonzales compares his life experience with his Father's, I had no idea who his Father was, what his days were like or what Gonzales had thought about him. Even so, to say such a thing about your Father, no matter how well-meaning it may be, is a disgusting insult. The real Gonzales, the self-absorbed, petulant jackass, was brought out for all to see.
And when I saw the quote from Leahy featuring the words "old buddy" and "I love you", I wondered about Chairman Pat, and sincerely hoped he was sarcastic. Fervently, sincerely hoped. Because otherwise... crikey.

The Guy
Marrying Bush's daughter doesn't have a law degree does he?
-
self-congratulatory and smarmy, but...
Look, I think the guy is pondscum too. But I think all he was trying to say here, in all its delusional glory, is that he's had a good life, professionally speaking, and he's grateful for the opportunities he's had (which were not available to or availed of by his father).
I don't think he really means it as a hard-core diss to his father, or at the very least, I don't think that was the primary intent of the compliment.
That said, I long for the days of youth and innocence where I could rejoice at a resignation of a Bush crony without being fearful of how low his replacement would sink.

out out damn typo
err, comment, not compliment.

I would hate to be a conspiracy theorist....
But the fact that the guys who have been hanging on by their fingernails and refusing to budge, like barnacles on the ship of state, are now turning loose, has me unsettled.
Why now?
In my darker moments, I can see a foundation being laid where Bush has been clearing brush in Crawford. With offices for all the presidents men to occupy when he refuses to hand over the reigns and declares martial law. I see Rove and Gonzales poring over a Staples catalog for office furniture even as I type.
Creepy that I could even have fantasies like this.
On the other hand, they have been arrogantly adamant about staying. What do they know that we don't?
Oh, and that "mortician's calm" that Gonzo has? It's more corpselike. There is clearly no one home behind those eyes...and his heart obviously shut down some time ago. Although the recent 400th execution in Texas probably got a few fast beats out of it.

He's a crony and a hack
Like all cronies, he has no vision of his own. The only thing he cares about is serving his master. Like all hacks, he is severely limited by his lack of competance.
The reality is that Alberto Gonzales' resignation notice (announcement?) was perfectly in keeping with who he is. Which is why his departure is a great day for the nation.

Gonzales
When I heard what Gonzales said about his father, I was stunned. I can't believe that even the most miserable of people would have no good days in their life. To me his comment seems very isulting and stupid. Gonzales appears to have taken stupidity (as well as forgetfullness) to a whole new level.

Don't forget Jeebus
From what I've read, Gonzo credits some kind of Christian Fellowship society for getting him through college, the emotional support he wasn't getting from his parents. I'm sure he and the Princeling have had some nice maudlin talks about how Jeebus saved them, booze and daddy issues just icing on the narcissistic, delusional cake.
-
Like the abused seeking another abuser...
Gonzo went from one alcoholic father to another. Any wonder he always wore the whipped-but-hopeful expression of a boy who only wanted praise from Daddy while expecting instead a smack?
I can't recall any other time in America's history when we were governed by representatives from every single category in the DSM-IV.

Nixon redux
Since the Bush League has turned everything old and made it new again (apologies to Nixon): One thing's for sure, we won't have Alberto Gonzales to kick around, anymore.
Poor Gonzales; being a crony and a hack doesn't reap the same rewards it used to, I guess. I really think all of these notable inner circle types leaving the White House is just to clear space for the next generation of would-be reactionaries to get their feet wet in the policy arena at the executive level, maybe figuring that they're not going to be in the White House again for quite awhile, and will need some fresh young faces in there to continue the tradition of wrongdoing that this administration has worked so tirelessly to preserve, once the country forgets this dark period in our history and the GOP (or whatever part represents their interests in the future) hoodwinks people into voting for them again.
May the obstruction of Justice be unobstructed in the future -- that can only be their fondest wish, judging how the Right will view Fredo's time as consigliere -- sorry, I mean Attorney General.

The Rats Are Coming To The Top
Problem is there's so damn many of them, eventually some decent soul may get trampled and drowned. At this time, of course, the one decent soul being hypothetical.
-
Attorney enabler
Gonzales was no more an Attorney General than Brownie was an emergency management professional. His chief contribution was as an enabler to our dry drunk POTUS, operating in whatever capacity best served Bush's psychologically warped personal/political agendas. His farewell scene is just more - as if it were needed - evidence of how pathetic those who prop up Bush's fragile ego really are. Forget the "alcoholic father" and "first Hispanic whatever" trappings; this Fredo is just a set-up guy, important only as a sycophant and gopher for the world's smallest person.

Interlude: Cliche Update
"he refuses to hand over the reigns"
I hope readers can forgive my nit-picking, but the word is "reins" not "reigns". I don't mean anything personal, but I've been seeing so many instances of this word substitution by columnists as well as responders that I feel compelled to comment on it.
"Reigns" makes a certain sense, in that it refers to control or government. But the actual reference is to "reins", those leather strips that attach to a horse's bridle and are used to direct it.
It's interesting how the more ancient usage seems to have been lost (who these days has any recollection that people once used animals for transportation??) and yet the concept of control and its corresponding homonym spelling live on.
Once again, nothing personal. It's not your fault that you wrote the 100th instance that drove me up the wall ;-)
