God save the queen!

With his bizarre gaffes on Monday, Bush managed to insult Queen Elizabeth and his mother -- a second time.

The letters thread is now closed.

Ai Chihuahua

At least he didn't rub the Queen's shoulders like he did with a very surprised Angela Merkel not long enough ago.

Jealous of monarchy?

As a firm believer in democracy, and of any person being able to try to achieve what they aspire to regardless of the accident of their birth, I was a little suprised by the feelings of jealously I've had to the Queen's visit. It wouldn't be a queen, but it would be nice if America could have some sort of lifetime goodwill ambassador to send to other nations. Somebody who could represent the country, without being tied to any political group, or advocating any specific policies.

Bush's politics and policies completely aside, I am embarrassed when our mush-mouthed president stands up on the world stage and acts like a boob. He makes us all look like idiots for electing him. It probably emboldens our enemies even.

Any ideas on who the US goodwill Ambassador could be?

Quite the wit

Actually I thought that Bush's quip:

"She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child."

was pretty good for an on-the-fly jest in the 400th anniversary year of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia a reminder that the reason the US speaks English is because the original colonies grew up as the offspring of Great Britain--Jamestown being, of course, named after one of the Queen's ancestors and Virginia after another.

God attack the queen!

Bush's gaffes aside, it's hard to feel at all sorry for one of the richest people on the planet.

Eddie Izzard (Dress to Kill) sang it best, "God attack the queen, send big dogs after her that bite her bum." He goes on to sing of her knickers, but I digress.

Yes, it's sad when you're accosted and insulted by a boorish idiot but that's life. No one is immune, not even QE2.

@calcareous

"He (Bush) makes us look like idiots for electing him."

Aren't we? Idiots, I mean? Voting for Bush was idiotic, therefore, we are a nation of idiots, excluding the millions that fought so desperately against it. Not to open a can of worms or anything, but not voting for Kerry in '04, (the only chance we had of taking the idiot's power away), was idiotic. Voting for Bush was idiotic. Voting for Nader was idiotic. Not voting at all was idiotic. Allowing an idiot to have his finger on the button can only be accomplished by idiots. Until the American people stop voting like idiots, we will continue to look, sound, and act like idiots.

And because of this, I think the best goodwill Ambassador would have to be either Rush Limaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, or Jerry Falwell.

An over-reaction, as usual

I'm no Bush fan, but I heard part the quote about a look "only a mother could give a child" and I assumed it was a nod to our colonial past, since Bush was talking about the anniversary of Jamestown at the time.

And according to the New York Times: "If the queen was not amused on Monday, she did not show it. ā€œI’m sure she accepted it for what it was — a slip of the tongue,ā€ said her press secretary, Penny Russell-Smith."

It never occurred to me that Bush's comment was his way of "turning the horrified queen into his mother, summoning up his own relationship with tough, disapproving Barbara, and the queen's own strained ties with Prince Charles." And I think you're giving Bush a little too much credit if you think he was trying to convey all that with an off-the-cuff remark.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to critizice President Bush. Why take a minor comment and try to wrest greater meaning from it?

At least he didn't mistake a flash photograph for an assassination attempt

And try to push her out of the way, causing the two of them to slide all the way across the banqet table and knock over the punch bowl and cake, and end up in the position where her legs were bent behind his ears.

Probably much the same look

She used to give that hussy Diana.

Slainte, Liz

From remarks of the Queen, yesterday afternoon at the British Embassy:

"Divided, all alone, we can be vulnerable. But if the Atlantic unites, not divides us, ours is a partnership always to be reckoned with in the defense of freedom and the spread of prosperity.

"That is the lesson of my lifetime. Administrations in your country, and governments in mine, may come and go. But talk we will; listen we have to; disagree from time to time we may; but united we must always remain."

Apparently she got over the wink, sans vapors.

Tuesday, May 8, 2007 04:53 PM

Of course she got over it

She has a sense of decorum. She's not an embarrassing rube playing dress-up. I'm no fan of British royalty, but more often than not even their so-called black sheep know how to behave with appropriate solemnity during state occasions (though the current youngling crop seem determined to put that notion to the test).

It seems clear she thought Bush was what any reasonable person thinks of him: he's stupid and a childish ass. It's also clear she wasn't going to make a fuss out of it.

Common courtesy

I've read on the web many letters about this, many of them have clearly been written by juveniles like bush, many written by people who have a terrible itch on the back of their necks, and some by very normal people, what ever the spin about this event, the real issue is about common courtesy in public for other people, he just has no respect for anyone, not the American people, visiting dignitaries, or dignitaries he's visiting, remember when he shouted out at a G8 meeting, 'Hey Blair,' not Hey Tony, or Hey Prime minister, and this is a guy, Tony, who put his whole career and rep on the line for him, watch him playing the bongos last week, he was making a mouth like a chimp, hence suggesting that the black people in the photo op are monkeys, the list goes on, and like a naughty child, we shouldn't laugh at him and say 'oh there goes george again making a fool of himself,' this guy is a serious danger to the free world, and to the American people specifically, we should impeach him, not for insulting the Queen, but for insulting the American peoples intelligence, and he did that by lying through his back teeth and continues to do so like the spoilt child that he is. Good riddance to bad rubbish bush.
