Firing Imus was the right thing

Years of racist, sexist and anti-Semitic jokes took their toll, and MSNBC finally saw the light.

The letters thread is now closed.

The word count

The Rutgers basketball team called the women of Tennessee "big" three time is three sentences. Does anyone else see a pattern? Rutgers lost, not because they couldn't shoot the ball in the basket, but because Tennessee was "big". Let's wash their mouths out with soap.

The search for a scapegoat is on!

First It was Rap music's fault and when it became clear that angle wouldn't work it then became the hypocritical overly sensitive black community fault, followed by the argument that Jesse Jackosn and Al Sharpton where doing this for media attention, now its a right wing left wing debate WTF is going on? So now racism is divided by political practices? Now you have shock Jocks say "they got one of ours now lets get Rosie" does that mean that all right wingers are racist and sexist by political affiliation?

WHAT HE SAID WAS WRONG AND THERE SHOULD BE NO PLACE IN THIS SOCIETY FOR IT, PERIOD!!! JUST ACCEPT IT... SAY IT ONE TIME IT WAS WRONG IT DOESN'T MATTER IF STEVE SAID IT OR I SAID IT IF YOU KNOW ITS WRONG THEN YOU SHOULDN'T SAY IT!!! THIS IS A 3RD GRADE DEBATE ABOUT RIGHT AND WRONG THAT SHOULD NOT BE TAKING PLACE WITH ADULTS!!

A mispronunciation becomes mainstream

The worst fallout from the silly Imus affair will be the legitimization of the mispronunciation "hos' usage in American English. It's legitimization was ironically bestowed by a proud American institute of higher learning, Rutgers, where the term "ho" one would guess after the Imus affair, is a well known misogynist put-down, though it's still not listed in most collegiate dictionaries? The word people remains "whore" and it's pronounced as such. The jury's still out on what exactly the term "nappy" means and why it would be an insult, some pundits advise it means lazy, some advise unkempt or curly hair; if it's the latter then Justin Guarini was one nappy-headed Idols contestant, and Carrot-Top remains one nappy-red-headed comedian. It still remains unclear to most Americans where "race" came into the whole Imus affair, but the best explanation to date seems to be that Don Imus did one bad Snoop Dogg impersonation, and it's verboten in the USA for a sclerotic old white coot to impersonate a black Dogg, hence the racial outrage. As Michael Jackson sang all those years ago, Imus, heee's baaad. Why don't I think the English speaking diaspora around the world will follow our lead on this one by enering a new definition under "ho" into their English dictionaries? They're not as wacky a people as we are you say? You lookin' at me? Gabba Gabba Hey!

Imus Guilty of Felony Not-Funny

His nasty comments were just the straw that broke his back. Then his advertisers reviewed his usefulness and took away his free pass to COAST.

grow up anonymous

anonymous, was it Imus calling Cheney a war criminal that caused you to label him and his listeners rightwingers? Or his attacks on Bush, or his relentless outcry, (which started on his show) at the conditions at Walter Reede? or hundreds of other far from right wing positions he has taken over the years? Of course you wouldn't know you are too busy catching the loony bandwagon. The self-righteousness of the Imus haters would be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.

How is getting fired for becoming a liability "censorship'?

Have we collectively lost our minds? This is not some "free speech" issue! This shit happens all the time. People get fired from their jobs for saying stupid things. It is all a matter of bad timing. He has gotten away with talking trash for a long time and it has helped rather than hindered the bottom line. But this time the sponsors started walking away and he was no longer a useful employee. It happens in offices all over the world on a daily basis. People talk a lot of inappropriate trash at the water cooler, but it is that one, day that Mr. Bossman/Bosswoman happens to be walking by and you let loose with that stupid Andrew Dice Clay imitation - and you get fired. It is just how it goes.

Imus is not a martyr. Just a cash cow that had to eventually be put down due to sudden and unfortunate profitability issues.

Hi Pumpkin....give accuracy a stab ok?

It may be hard to do. It's like that old ballade "try a little tenderness"...but think accuracy instead of "tenderness".

No, babe, years of racist, sexist and anti-semitic jokes didn't take their toll. Imus has been equal opportunity for decades.

Oh I could go into an endless roll about Rush anyone? Savage? the felons at Faux...but for your ilk it is just easier to wring your little hands in moral outrage...."how can they talk that way", she pilled. Never mind anything about it and Revs. Al and Jesse getting and you giving some center stage..naw...disregard that.

did Imus overstep. sure. did he apologize? yup. was he sincere? i know him and his crew. yes. I can move on. Can you?

Sad Comment, Joan!

Well, if you're right, then you have to be right everywhere. Like a law, you've created an opinion precendent that you must apply equally to all broadcasts. Therefore, if you believe yourself correct, you must support the firing of all radio/tv hosts that meet these loose prerequisites. You will have a busy lifetime applying these loose elements and standards. I suppose the jury will be determined by the heat of the issue, the words stated, the popularity of the host, the attention of the media, the other news in the cycle on the day it was said, the power or lack thereof of the hosts enemies (government itself?), etc...

Joan, I expected a lot more thoughfulness from you!
