Firing Imus was the right thing

Years of racist, sexist and anti-Semitic jokes took their toll, and MSNBC finally saw the light.

The letters thread is now closed.

"Ilk?"

I don't have an ilk.

There is no vast left-wing conspracy to suppress assholery.

I belong to the ACLU and I care passionately about free speech, in principle AND practice, which is why I want people to remain extremely clear about what exactly it is that the Constitution guarantees us.

A multi-million dollar paycheck and a corporately sponsored national platform are NOT "rights."

Imus is an entertainer, not "the press."

His speech has not been censored, and his civil liberties are not in danger.

Period.

don't apologize, Emily

you managed to rouse the near-dead from their torpor. that's a Good Thing. i've been trying (and failing) that for days!

Friday, April 13, 2007 11:58 AM

ugh! (they went back into their coffins)

sorry Emily.

Deirdre Imus was just on TV

let that be a lesson to you, even if you can, DON'T MARRY YOUNG WOMEN! (not worth the token - or even the change).

Stop desperately searching for a scapegoat and embrace accountability!

There is a conduct clause in every contract between employer and employee in America and that clause usually says something to the effect of "If you partake in any behavior detrimental to the organization then you will be terminated" Imus actions were detrimental to the organization which became very clear when sponsors started pulling out by the dozen making his actions detrimental to the bottom line of the organizations that employed him. Why is it that conduct and ethics clauses should apply to everyone except media personalities?

The fact that there are so many people out there that are outraged over the firing of Imus is the ultimate testament to how far we still have to go in regards to bridging the 300 year old gap between the races!! If people can't understand why what he said should be considered unacceptable in our society then they are the truly delusional one. As a white man I hold myself and my people to a higher standard than anyone else which is why I am pleased that he was fired.

The simple fact that Imus fans are sending hate mail to these young college students speaks volumes about the type of haven for racism his show has become. Imus used his airways to kick a group of young woman while they were down and that's just deplorable.

Joan, Thanks for not playing the "protect the base" game on this one, it is possible for the base to be wrong! This type of behavior and thinking needs to stop! And please stop going on S.C. they always attack you and never let you talk, when often times your the only one with a valid point.

Imus fans are sending hate mail

wow, all 3 of them?

Friday, April 13, 2007 01:09 PM

actually

most cases of embezzlement are NOT prosecuted BECAUSE the organization choses NOT to file charges (geneerally because they don't want the negative PR). I worked at one such place. We caught the guy and knew the PR would affect our doncations, so we fired the guy and closed the subject. YEs, it was our choice, not the prosecutor's. Ben Dover gets off on calling people names, but I don't. But I do relate FACTS, not insults.

Friday, April 13, 2007 01:10 PM

HATE MAIL IS HATE MAIL!!

Imus actually had 350 thousand regular viewers on television and several million on radio so I think it was a little more than 3!

Friday, April 13, 2007 01:23 PM

his ratings were LOW and going down

his ratings were LOW and going down, down down.

Friday, April 13, 2007 01:23 PM

bad ratings

I mean , who wants to watch an old man sleep?

The answer? Abolish HD TV

There is about zero chance that Joan Walsh or Al Sharpton actually watched the game, but if they had been in a spectator sports establishment and watched the game in HD, they probably would have agreed with Imus. So how expert are these experts? Who is the current national champion? No clue. Who was last years national champion? I think I will have to go look that one up.

One thing for sure. No Rutgers basketball player will ever have to get out their purse in a beauty shop again. All they will have to say is "Rutgers Basketball" and the proprieters will say "oh sweetheart, you need the works, don't worry, it's on us." Over the course of a lifetime, this could easily be milked into a six figure value.

But what about the national champions? There is a footnote about them if you search deeply enough on the scarlet knights website:

"Tennessee was big and all those other things, but they killed us on the boards, and it was a matter of (us)blocking out. We have played against other big people, and blocking out is an effort thing that anybody and everybody can do," Stringer added. "When you look at a team as big as them, then you have to do it, and we just didn't."

Actually, the word "big" is not very flattering either, at least not in this context. Given a choice between "big" and "nappy headed", I would probably have to go with nappy headed. That is much easier to change. With all of the attention that Rutgers is generating, it will not belong before the women of Tennessee will be saying " Hey what about us? We are a bunch of nappy headed hos too."

Nobody has as little respect for female athletes as women, in particular Joan Walsh. I see it as the manifestation of two primary problems: ignorance and stupidity and insensitivity. How many does that make? Doesn't matter, everyone if focused on the wrong injustice.

Firing of Imu was the LEFT thing

I am amazed how quickly many in the arts and media have jumped the Imus ship...now that he is not available to promote a book or agenda.

Sure, a fine and/or suspension would do for this slur. But, anyone person with minimal powers of observation should have quickly recognized the "edgy salon" atmosphere and chose to watch or not.

What he provided is not available anywhere on television--an introduction to some of the best writers and commentators.

Certainly, I more than once rolled my eyes, or even turned him off because of some remark or another...especially those by

his producer. But, you won't find the other content anywhere except some boring shows on PBS or Span. Don't forget even the sitting Vice Pres staff let him on the show, not to mention Bush 1 and many other politicians.

Iguess Joan Walsh wants her "milk and honey" and now she has it. I have always said I won't pay for radio, but if Imus does I will support him.

If his firing had been demanded by the team I would have understood - but I hope this does not mean major networks are now going to two promoters who do little than complain and a

tv weather man!!! Ron Walker
