Firing Imus was the right thing

Years of racist, sexist and anti-Semitic jokes took their toll, and MSNBC finally saw the light.

The letters thread is now closed.

BEN DOVER

Simple answer, double standard. But for me it is much more than that. These men have only one goal and that is to keep the blacks and whites apart. If we ever united usurer's such as Jackson and Sharpton would be on the street selling apples. Unfortunately even then they would still be shuck'n, jiv'n and still trying to get over. There was a columnist on NewsI New York last night that said it best. You need these buffoons to keep you centered. Tom Wolf characterized them as just that. Caricature's that belong in a media side show.

He was boring anyway

Imus was fired because he was getting old and boring and his ratings were going down. NBC was only too glad to have a good excuse to kick him out midcontract.

It was a pure market decision. Sagging ratings.

And firing him because of racist sexist remarks would be a market decision too. It's a free market out there and NBC and hire or fire who they like without government involvement. If the audience doesn't like the DJ anymore, NBC is simply responding to markey demands by firing him. Simple.

ILLEGALLY using funds form the Rainbow/Push Coalition (A non-profit 501(c)3 Organization) to buy his mistress a house in LA and to pay for his bastard child he had with her outside of his marriage.

because Push decided not to press charges. That's thier choice. And the same thing has been done for white embezzlers a LOT. It ain't about race, stop trying.

yes, folks, it's Thrasher's time to gloat

it's like the black reaction to the OJ trial. of COURSE they knew he was guilty (it was obviously a "crime of passion" by a jealous man. those have happened for ages. it wasn't a "hate crime".) it was just that after centuries of *innocent* black men being killed, a few minutes of "the shoe is on the other foot" is just...human. similarly here, that les moonves (a jew) has to get dressed down and intimidated by sharpton who hates him and all of (my) kind. hell! you don't have to think that a black man (necessarily) hates jews if he revels in that. in his heart he knows why (and for good reason) jews don't like sharpton, just be quiet now. let him eat his slice in peace. as he says, tomorrow starts another day. i agree with Golden Oldie (but don't want to agree *too* much, since you might very well not agree). i found the coach of the Rutgers' team NAUSEATING (the team itself can be forgiven, they are young and controlled). an hour of bleating pity. (then, today, standing like the cowardly onlookers, over the body of the dead goliath, hectoring stern, iced with gloating proud). *these* are the women warriors? (by the way, i'd like the sniveling Maya Angelou banned from the airwaves!). but that is what society is now. when i was growing up, italians would *never* let you "see them cry" - anything other than a shrug, a smirk and a flip joke was seen as an unforgiveable sign of weakness. now the Italian American Anti-Defamation League boo-hoos about the "image" the sopranos project.

EMILY

I am not sure whom is missing the point. Imus and he is a buffoon to be sure does not openly advocat racial violence. Sharpton does and to the detriment of our society and loss of life. Please let me empties loss of life. To Sharpton, loss of life is of no consequence as long as there is remuneration and a few Geogio's in the closet. I know it is difficult for the liberal mind to understand, but the taking of any life is wrong. This man is dangerous.

shock jock? are you kidding me/

Has anyone getting all indignant listened to Imus recently? or seen him? He is old and boring! Not shoking! He sits there and barely enunciates and rambles like your grandfather in the alzheimer's ward. He is running down slowly out of steam and I'm so glad he's gone because it was depressing to watch him try to make it through a show and to try to act shocking. He's dried up.

ZXBDSTS?

E hill, your post is difficult to understand.

I suspect there may be some typos in it.

As for Al Sharpton, I'm not sure what your point is.

What do you propose?

Should we kill him?

Should someone specific fire him?

If your point is just that Al Sharpton is potentially more dangerous to human life than Don Imus, well...OK. I'll buy that you've made that argument, and at this time I have no desire to counter it.

But I don't understad what Al Sharpton has to do with CBS' right to fire Imus....it's not like they gave Sharpton the drive-time slot immediately upon releasing Imus.

Cosmic Mojo

You really are shit for brains, aren't you? It isn't their choice NOT to prosecute. It is the government who makes that decision, only They choose to prosecute William Aramony of the United Way, rightfully so (look it up before you open your piehole and spew bile), for the same crimes that Jesse Jackson committed. What that pathetic sack of meat, Jesse Jackson, did was mail fraud, wire fraud, tax fraud, bank fraud, Title fraud. You should bone on your law next time as well, the Rainbow/Push Coalition has no say in whether there is a prosecution, only the government does. They decided not to as a simple double standard which benefits shithole shills like Jackson. He is despicable. You must like him.

Emily

How brave of you to defend the rights of people to rave quietly and offensively to themselves! What courage! What conviction! As long as they're impotent; as long as they don't have a media job where more than one or two people at a time might be offended, you're stalwart!

For the last time, I'm not arguing for Imus's Constitutional right not to be fired. I'm arguing that, in principle, it is un-American. In principle it is wrong.

Polynesian Outrage at Imus

This just in from Honolulu. An intrepid Hawaiian pulled out his Oxford Dictionary, looked up the word "nappy", and discovered it was British slang for "diaper". He figures that us mainlanders got old howlie Imus all wrong. No, Imus wasn't taking a giggly swipe at the Rutgers women's basketball team, gangsta rappers, and by default all African Americans in particular, he was actually putting down local hero Don Ho as a "diaper head". He's now really angry, and he says all Polynesians ought to be really angry also. Imus must go!
