Credit where it's due

OK, Salon wasn't alone in covering the war well

The Onion got it right first and got it right ever since

I remember when The Onion posted its first articles after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Like its sister "news media" (ATTACK ON AMERICA!), they created a big, scary graphic designed to make you soil your pants with fear to run next to all their related coverage. I don't recall the graphic - an explosion seen through crosshairs, I believe - but I will never forget the caption: HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

Talk about summing up what we all were *really* feeling.

Seeing that was the first time I thought that maybe everybody wasn't going to stay insane forever after all.

And they've been telling the truth about the war better and more honestly than anyone else ever since. (A current headline: "CNN Renews This Week At War For Next Eight Seasons")

They got it right well before the war too

I can't find it on their site, but I'm almost certain that either just after the 2000 election or after the 2001 inauguration, they posted a headline something like "New Administration Plans to Increase Deficit and Find a Country to Invade".

Prescient?

"Bush: Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace and Prosperity Is Over". And they wrote that only days after Bush was first inaugurated.

The ironic thing is that reality has turned out to be much more extreme than their story predicted. But of course, if they'd predicted that things would turn out as badly as they actually did, it would have been too extreme to be funny.

If you had paid attention to the Congressional Black Caucus

The CBC has been the most progressive faction of the Democratic party, but despite their record they are ignored by the rest of the progressive movement. Are you really for equality?

Be sure to check out this Point/Counterpoint at the Onion

..and note that it's dated March 2003

http://www.theonion.com/content/point/this_war_will_destabilize_the

Point:

This War Will Destabilize The Entire Mideast Region And Set Off A Global Shockwave Of Anti-Americanism

Counterpoint:

No, It Won't

I don't believe I ever read a clearer expression of the neocon point of view than this.

I Had Very Strong Reservations

On the night of "Saddam Hussein and his sons have 48 hours to leave Iraq."

I remember thinking--Is that you John Wayne?

Imbalayo

Good point. Thanks.

Forgive me for asking, but is anyone at Salon paying close attention to the CBC? Sounds like a good organization to be reporting on regularly. The CBC doesn't generally flow with the mainstream, and it has much to reveal about the real world of alternative politics in Congress.

Here's something to brag about

You guys like to brag, You bragged about how sadistic you were when you all watched Carmen Electra fall in public and almost break her wrist, over and over again.

That got you guys really high, didn't it?

I've got nine screws in my wrist so I wasn't able to enjoy her near-injury the way you guys did. I'm just glad she didn't end up in surgery.

But I'm wondering -- since you're such sadistic sarcastic people -- why don't you guys enjoy the war as much as you enjoyed that Carmen Electra video?

That's what I can't understand.

I mean come one -- you're not humanists, we all know that. That's no secret here.

I guess I just miss the sixties. It wasn't hip to be sadistic and sarcastic back then, at least not in the antiwar crowd it wasn't.

Maybe that's why we were able to gain enough moral authority to actually end the war, something you guys haven't yet managed.

Thank you

for reminding us all there were a few published voices, courageous, articulate voices in the wilderness of 4 years ago, when nothing but a babbling finger flip response came back from the majority. Its one of the things I remember most, not arguing points, just getting waved off.
