They knew the inspectors had discovered the puported WMDs did not exist but by knowing this it guaranteed they would attack Iraq believing it would be "a cake walk slamdunk." W. Bush had long dreamed of the day when he would finish what his dad failed to do in 1991: topple Saddam's regime. He mentioned this to a biographer while governor of Texas. Mr. Dearlove of Britain's MI5 disclosed this agenda in the "Downing Street Memo." Later others such as Spanish Prime Minister Azera also wrote of this. We have seen politicians on both sides of the aisle make the excuse that the intelligence was faulty as their reasons for supporting the invasion. However, common sense should have prevailed when comparing such a policy to the one used against North Korea a nation which had a WMD arsenal at the ready. This proved to the world that the best guarantee that you will not be threatened or intimidated by nations possessing nukes if you also create a nuclear retaliatory capability. Daniel Ellsberg many years ago counted twenty-six threats by American poliiticians to use nukes. (Always against nations not having them.) France was insulted by correctly rejecting being drawn into the quicksand of the Mideast by writers such as George Will saying "How many divisions are needed to defend Paris?" Answer: "We do not know because it was never done!!" Mr. Will is no W. Bush as he does read history and knows the millions of soldiers France lost in their wars against Germany. Steve, World War 2
Joan you were tough against Hitchings -- does he really think he is another Bill Buckley -- he is so pompous and I am never sure whether he is hungover or drunk -- I guess there is always a fine line there anyway.
I have to second a section of what Amity stated in that the Bush voters, voted on the illusion of competence!! And if not Bush than either Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc, etc, the rest knew when to jump ship though he did beg them to stay
Iraq was completely enclosed

THE INVASION OF IRAQ
To which the world replied
"This is where you stupid assholes
Are on your own..."
So the hell do I George. That and the dick you had to wave in order to screw our entire country had to be Cheney. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
People may as well gather and sit at a supper table,
cook some good borsch soup. Red beets. Ice cream.
No silly nonsense. And 'if that is true, it's only true,
because dear Joan's Walsh tuned in to a daily blues?
I mean:`Truth can be a heart ache. Ya ever wonder?
Why didn't G. W. B remain with the poison ivy vines?
He could have itched all day at thee ranch.`O No lie.
Now, what a scab he's become. Gimme more gimme.
I hope this is no nasty post. Ay, enjoy borscht soups.
... "intelligence failure"... Gimme more borsch soups!
what you've already given away.
Bush's self-congratulation on not selling his "soul" is tantamount to saying "Thank goodness I've learned absolutely nothing!" But I'm not sure Bush's soul would fetch any more bids on ebay than Sarah Palin's gubanatorial jet.
"Soulful" is one of the last words I'd use to describe GWB (along with "intelligent" and "honest").
... was in the Oval Office.
Here is an extract from the resignation speech of British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook Tuesday 18th March 2003:
I hope that Saddam, even now, will quit Baghdad and avert war, but it is false to argue that only those who support war support our troops.
It is entirely legitimate to support our troops while seeking an alternative to the conflict that will put those troops at risk...
Ironically, it is only because Iraq's military forces are so weak that we can even contemplate its invasion. Some advocates of conflict claim that Saddam's forces are so weak, so demoralised and so badly equipped that the war will be over in a few days.
We cannot base our military strategy on the assumption that Saddam is weak and at the same time justify pre-emptive action on the claim that he is a threat.
Iraq probably has no weapons of mass destruction in the commonly understood sense of the term - namely a credible device capable of being delivered against a strategic city target.
It probably still has biological toxins and battlefield chemical munitions, but it has had them since the 1980s when US companies sold Saddam anthrax agents and the then British Government approved chemical and munitions factories.
Why is it now so urgent that we should take military action to disarm a military capacity that has been there for 20 years, and which we helped to create?
What intelligence did Mr. Cook receive that Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair did not receive? Obviously none, but the difference was that there was a lot more intelligence in Cook's thinking processes.
Unfortunately he died of a heart attack soon afterwards.
It does make me very angry, to this day I can't believe those knuckleheads have gotten away with this travesty! He has some regrets he says.... how ironic, I can hardly believe you can impeach a guy over a blow job but not this. And all this egomaniac has to say is he wishes the info on Iraq had been correct, how maddening. He should keep his mouth shut. I'll be better, January 20th.
Just get over your BDS. You've got way bigger problems on your hands with the marxist you just helped push into the presidency. Obama can't even take a stand on the auto bailout. He's a fake and a man-child. BTW, how's all the CHANGE working for you? Such a stupid woman. Go back to your kitchen.
That's about as succinct a summary of Bush's entire life as I'll ever see short of a Cheney-like vulgarity.
Dear Joan,
Every time I watch analysts on television discussing the subject of Bush and the WMD, I am frustrated by the fact that everyone always forgets that the only thing the scare mongering about the WMD legitimately provoked were the weapons INSPECTIONS !
Has everyone in world forgotten about Hans Blix !?
All the Bush prattle about the possibility of WMD was we were assured designed to threaten Saddam Hussein into admitting the inspectors, whom he had tossed out in 1998.
These inspectors, as you will recall (I hope!) where admitted to Iraq by Hussein in an attempt to demonstrate that the WMD no longer existed and to thereby avert and American attack.
You will also recall, I hope again, that Hussein allowed these inspectors unfettered access to even his palaces.
These inspectors, under the supervision of Mr. Blix, had been Iraq for over four months and assured the world and Bush that they had found zero evidence of WMD.
They further assured the world and Bush that they needed only one more month to complete their inspections and that at that time, absent any illicit weapons being found, Blix would certify that Iraq was not a threat to the United States.
It is astonishing and demoralizing to me in the extreme that seemingly informed people (and professional commentators) such as yourself appear to be oblivious to the above easily accessed information.
To my knowledge there exists only one investigative reporter/essayist covering politics who has consistently and carefully documented the information I have related to you in this note.
For the reasons described above and others, I think it is not only advisable, but necessary for this journalist's reporting to be routinely featured on Salon.com.
Below is Mr. Robert Parry's very recent reporting and analysis on the subject that you and the others inadequately and irresponsibly addressed tonight on Chris Matthews' program. I urge you to read it, and then to remember this critically important documentation the next time this vexing subject is discussed.
