Missing Edie
Honestly, Sally Field comes off as such a frenzied, ridiculous goof that I'm kind of glad she DIDN'T wind up Emmy's anti-war spokesperson.
She's a self-important, crappy one-note actress who has never learned to hide the mechanics of acting, and her shreiking, sputtering hysteria on stage was just as unentertaining.
I would have been far more interested in hearing what Edie Falco had to say.
-
Sally Field is a Comedic Genius!!
Sally Field has proven once again that she is an eloquent spokeswoman for any cause...Or a blathering idiot, I'm not sure.
QUIET!!!! QUIET!!!! I HAVE TO FINISH TALKING!!!!!!
Yeah, if mothers ruled the world there would be no wars. Just look at Indira Gandhi. Or Golda Meir.
No wonder no one takes anything Hollywood elites say seriously.
-
They shouldn't have cut her off but what she said was naive and not consistent with what is known about human history
Stalin idealized mothers. Putin is idealizing mothers right now.
I don't believe that if the mothers ruled the world, there'd be no wars. What evidence does anyone have for that?
I've read about archeological evidence for extremely warlike cultures in Iran, Central Asia and the Ukraine that appear to have been ruled by women on horseback who fought relentless wars.
Those were the same people who made Ovid's life such hell after he was sent into exile. He complained that all they do is shoot arrows at one another all day. Isn't that what Ovid said about the Sarmatians?
And there's all the accidental experience I acquired in the personality traits of mother bears as a young Yosemite camper.
If mother bears had guns, every camper in Yosemite would be dead and their food would all be eaten by baby bears.
I don't mean to sound like I'm on Fox's side or anything. But I think Sally Field is being naive. That kind of naivete doesn't really serve the aniwar movement IMO.
-
cue the music
If I were at the controls, I'd certainly have ignored the "goddamn" and the anti-war posturing ... but I would have been tempted to cut her off for the hackneyed "if mothers ruled the world, there'd be no wars" sentiment.

unitaryexecutive and quiettype
Sally Field has done trumped your type so many times. You two just wouldn't care to admit to being 'second trumpet to a woman' whose public persona at public events like this allows you to pull her down. If God damned loving and wonderful mothers controlled the world....it would be a better place, you fools. Sorry.
-
Alright, just read two recent letters about 'mothers'...
I qualified my 'mothers' statement with 'loving and caring' mothers. For what it is god damned worth.
-
Not political
I'm sure that any U.S. network would have censored her at "goddamn," whether she was referring to war, Republicans, Democrats or Bin Laden. It wasn't a political decision. Katherine Heigl and Ray Romano got the same treatment and they weren't making any political statements.

Fox? Hypocrits?- Let's Go to the Videotape!
It's going to be fun over the next few days as people post links to the instances where Fox airs people saying "damn" and "goddamn". I actually thought Field must have said "goddamneffing wars" only not "effing"

Did we expect anything less from Fox?
Fox at this point is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican National Committee. Or it is the other way around? I often forget...
Anyway, Fox is noted for the kind of objectivity that we used to see from Pravda and Tass during the cold war, so to call them "gutless" kind of misses the mark. The reality is that gutlessness is, in fact, their defining characteristic.

It's all a dark plot
By the plotters who plot this stuff. Look for the conspiracy behind the conspiracy behind the conspiracy.

finally something on tv worth reading.
Joan, I am tired of the T.V. coverage. I could care less about the shows. This is the kind of commentary that is needed. Culture is so much more than TV. surely you know this. Lara

Let’s start a list...
...of FOX shows (past and present) where “G-word” has been used:
1: 24
2: Simpsons
3: Arrested Development
4: Married with Children
5: Boston Public
6: Ally McBeal
7: Family Guy
8: American Dad (pretty much the entire Sunday line-up)
9: Malcolm in the Middle
Just off the top of my head.. Can anyone else think of more?

FUNME2
Could you kindly repost your response to me in English?
Thanks.

Oh Please
Hillary Clinton is a mother and she voted in favor of both the Afghan and Iraq Wars. I'm too lazy to look up all the Congresswomen and female senators who voted for the war who are also mothers, but everyone knows they're out there.

Re: Mothers
I agree that Sally Field's comment about mothers is rather rediculous in light of the evidence of thousands of years of human history. Women are just as prone to support war as men are.
However, I think the point is not that her antiwar rant was particularly insightful, but that Fox likely censored it because the network (continually and persistantly) squelches voices of dissent.
If Fox would like to censor every rediculous statement made on its network in support of the war ... well, nevermind, then it would have nothing to air.
-
I don't see this as censorship
The Emmy's is an award show, not a platform for spouting personal political ideology. If they allowed Sally Field to speak her piece against the war, then they have to allow any actors or actresses who disagree and are FOR the war have equal time. Since support of the war, or lack thereof, is irrelevant to the Emmmy's, there is nothing wrong with what Fox did. I'd do the same - if they didn't remove war-related comments (for or against) then they can be accused to agreeing with whatever is said under their banner. No corporation wants that.
Of course such a policy has to be evenly applied to ALL actors making ANY comments about the war.
It's irrelevant that Fox has 'news' shows that are pro-war. Those are shows designated for that sort of commentary. The issue isn't what Fox's position on the war is (that seems pretty apparent)..the issue is whether they can or should censor unsolicited comments in an entertainment setting. I'd do the same if I were them.

As long as I don't have to hear Zack de la Roca screaming
People can pose and shout whatever they want. It's not as if I look to my Hollywood presenters for valuable or even crisp opinions on anything. So you fist pump, girl! Stick it to da Man!
