  • Who cares?

    The California primary is over.

Heck, the San Francisco mayoral election is over.

  • It "advanced the cause of gay marriage"?

Really? Try telling that to the gay and lesbian residents of Virginia, Ohio, or any of about two dozen other states that passed constitutional amendments banning any relationship remotely resembling marriage, in the backlash that followed Mayor Newsom's little publicity stunt.

  • Give it up, Joan

Geez ... I love Salon and your stuff, but come on. Who gives a shit about this ancient non-story? Your gal Hillary is done for; come on board the O-Train to Winnerville. Okay that was geeky but still.

  • Wow...just wow.

Joan, your ridiculously transparent attempts to goad Newsom into smearing Obama is the kind of tactic I'd expect from Faux News...not from a seemingly respectable progressive journalist!

Look - I realise that your girl Hillary is in deep trouble, and that as a loyal Clintonista you are utterly desperate to find and broadcast anything - ANYTHING - that would rub some of the shine off of Barack's steamrollin' campaign.

But this interview sinks your Obama-bashing to a new low.

    "Come on", indeed.

  • Joan, your obama hit piece is off a day.

You normally write your obama hit peices and attacks the day BEFORE the election. What happened? your a day late with your clitnon spin and discreditting against obama. Maybe that day will last forever, in the ememory of one joan walsh. As the day she could have made a differance. The war room all day is not enough. one more obama hit piece by mrs walsh would have made all the differance in the world. :)

    Dirty Trick Alert!!

    Revealed on today's Thom Hartmann...

One of the most-circulated clips of Michelle Obama has been edited to remove the word "really" from the phrase "I am [really] proud..."

    Get this out there!

  • Who *wouldn't* want a picture with this guy?

How utterly shocking that Barack Obama wouldn't want to be photographed next to an admitted drunk who screwed around with his best friend's wife. Newsom's like the worst parts of our last two presidents put together. Let's not even get into the fact that he threw John Kerry and gay marriage advocates under a bus by going on a gay wedding spree that was primarily designed to boost his own sagging poll numbers.

    What a dick.

  • One of the reasons

although not the only one of course, that Kerry lost in 2004 was Newsome's big stunt.

  • Obama Wins Wisconsin by 17% and Hawaii by 52% !

This is the headline you meant to write when your crayon broke.

  • Salon's Greatest Hits?

I'm hoping that Salon (or its readership) does a Greatest Hits retrospective at some point, like Salon's greatest hit pieces on Obama, either if he clinches the nomination, or else after the general election, when he's buried McCain. I don't think this piece qualifies as a Greatest Hit-caliber piece, but there's still time.

  • Noncoverage

Well, you imply that Obama was "avoiding" Newsom...intimating that perhaps this was because Newsom is gay? Is that what you were getting at with this piece? Interestingly, I attended his rally in Virginia a couple of Sundays ago, before our "Potomac Primary", and Obama took Q&A from the audience. One of the first questions was asked by a clean-cut young man waving a Veterans for Obama sign...paraphrasing from memory, but here's how it went: "I'm a gay veteran. I want to know what you plan to do about our country's current policies on this issue." Obama did not miss a beat..."First of all, thank you for your service (many cheers). I believe that any man or woman who wishes to serve their country should have that opportunity. My policies will be what have come to be the position of many senior military officials, including Gen. Shalikashvili -- let's say that their policies have EVOLVED, to believe that the current Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy is a bad idea...after all, they don't have such policies in Israel, in Great Britain...should we really be refusing Arabic speakers and other needed specialties?" This is not a word-for-word, taped replay of the discussion, but I was there. I remember this very clearly. This has received NO, ZERO, ZILCH press coverage. Curious, wouldn't one say?

  • Joan tries to smear Obama after his big win!!!

Obama wins Wisconsin by 17% and Hawaii by 52% -- and Joan is busy digging up a non-story in an utterly transparent attempt to smear him on behalf of her beloved Hildabeast.

As the church lady used to say, "Isn't that special."

You missed the story completely, Joan (albeit on purpose).

    It should've read:

    HILLARY HANGING BY HER FINGERTIPS!

  • Heh.

Clever, clever. That's pretty funny, and shows a touch of good humor that Salon can poke fun at itself like this.

Wait, this isn't a parody? Oh.

    Hrm.

Well, if I'm really meant to take this post seriously, bryans pretty much sums up my view of Mayor Newsom. The sudden spate of marriages in 2004 seemed like a transparent stunt from the get-go, and pretty clearly hurt the valid and worthwhile cause of recognizing gay marriage across the country (to say nothing of its effect on Kerry.)

But, really, isn't there anything else about the presidential campaign worth covering right now than 4-year-old allegations of photo-ducking, where even the offended party doesn't appear to be offended?

  • Are you serious?!

Why is this important? My god, I wouldn't even want a picture with Newsom - didn't he have an affair with his best friend's wife?

Obama has tons of ties in the Bay Area to people who aren't part of the typical SF political establishment, like DA Kamala Harris and Rep. Barbara Lee. Why not cover all of those photo-ops? Or - even better - why not cover no photo ops and stick to issues that matter?

Why not, indeed, start turning your eye to covering John McCain and the lies his campaign has started to issue rather than wasting your time - and ours - on photo-ops Obama doesn't take for whatever reason?

People are dying - in Iraq and in America - because of failed foreign and domestic policies. Your enemy isn't Obama. It's with Bush's administration and McCain's potential extension of Bush's policies. Your fight is with the Republican party.

Hillary lost Wisconsin, Hawaii and the last 8 contests before because she decided to dismiss "flyover" states. She lost because her campaign was arrogant about its "inevitability"; she lost, because as much as she champions rights of the working class, she has lost touch with the working class and how to mobilize them to get behind her.

We can still like Hillary and admit that she hasn't run as good a campaign as Obama. We can let her go and feel ok about it.

Focus, Joan, focus. November will be around the corner and we need a Democrat to win.
