I'm not sure if 7 years of no attacks on American soil is due to, or in spite of, our current foriegn policy. I am intrigued by this "solid foothold" of which you speak...where is it, exactly? The Iraqis want us out of their country in the not-too-distant future, and Afghanistan is many things, but a "solid foothold" it is not. As it happens, I dont share your view that the Iranians seek "expansionism". They perhaps want to be a player in the region, and may well want to be a nuclear power, but I do not think they're seeking to be the second coming of the Soviet Union or anything. Call me naive.
In any case, your view of the past 7 years is a bit more blissful than mine.
