A pit bull in lipstick?

A snarling Sarah Palin savages Barack Obama while her defenders deride sexism and "liberal media" bias.

The letters thread is now closed.

The Palin Creature...

Any Hillary supporter who does not return to the "fold" after the lies, distortions and evil rhetoric tonight was not a Democrat to begin with. We must work together to fight these desperate tactics that McCain decided he must use to win.

Democrats, we need to unify as never before: if the GOP can circle their wagons around McCain, a broken down old flip-flopper and Palin, an inexperienced Caribou Prom Queen on steroids -- can't we all come together to support Barack Obama -- the candidate Hillary and Bill Clinton have both heartily endorsed and pledged to work to elect?

@Xanthro

Actually, I would ask those questions of a man who had this same family. Kids that young and a newborn with special needs require a lot of attention from both parents.

I have a request/question for you Joan.

A.) Do you think she has given the green light for Obama surrogates to "bring it".

B.) Do you think Hillary Clinton will "bring it".

C.) What do you think Hillary will do to her if she does "bring it on".

I for one think this speech was a golden gift to Hillary Clinton because by clobbering Palin SHE can win back Obama supporters who will be essential if she wants to be a major power in the Democratic party going forward.

This Alaskan's perspective

I'm stunned. This isn't our Sarah.

This is someone mean and sarcastic and scary. People here like Sarah on a personal level because she's down to earth and nice, or at least we thought she was nice.

@lolcait C'mon

You're getting sloppy and not bringing your A game. You quote included the words 'bare knuckled'. I don't know any wimps that employ bare knuckle tactics. And have you ever lived in Chicago or read about it's history? Chicago politics has never been for sissies.

To get back to the junkyard dog in question, Sarah had her moment tonight. She played to the crowd. But it remains to be seen how the national audience will respond, particularly those 'undecideds' out there. She can't just repeat this speech for the next 60 or so days. She's going to have to branch out. The media isn't done with her by any means. Let's she how she holds up to that and see if she can think on her feet. She may actually have to talk semi-intelligently about policy.

thanks Xrandadu Hutman

You hit the nail on the head.

The people at the Republican convention all have that hate filled, vengeful look last seen in the movie "Bob Roberts”.

It must take so much energy to maintain that level of anger.

Community Organizer

Palin clearly has no idea what a community organizer does

Enlighten us, because it's a meaningless term.

What were Obama's achievements as community organizer. Since, nobody seems to be able to enumerate them, and seem an expert on the matter, perhaps you can enlighten us, and then explain how this prepares someone for the office of president, in a manner greater than Mayor.

Obnoxious and Negative

I've been hearing all year about how the voters don't want negative and in fact the Obama campaign has risen like cream to the top by avoiding it (directly, anyway). Yet Palin just dropped a steaming pile of negative right onto America's lap. Will they find it to their taste, or, like me, be utterly repulsed?

Sexism

She'll never be able to cry sexism again

Yes, she will, and in many cases it will be warranted, and Joan, you should defend Palin when the attacks are simply based on her gender, just as anyone should defend Obama when attacks are simply based on his race.

Lines of attack such as "if there's an emergency at 3am and one of her kids is really sick, which gets attention" is sexist. It's not even debatable. It's a question that would NEVER be asked about a man.

This doesn't mean all attacks can be parried as sexist, but those that are should still be condemned by all who oppose sexism.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:46 PM

Palin clearly has no idea what a community organizer does ...

... but then, she doesn't know what the Vice President does, either, so it all balances out.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:46 PM

She and Rudy did what they were supposed to do.

They fired up the base.

No, Obama shouldn't attack her. He should ignore her. Attacking her -- if it even needs to be done -- is what Biden is for.

As long as Obama maintains his lead, he should treat Palin as if she is scarcely worthy of notice. Why risk a backlash when ahead?

Moreover, if the Enquirer actually finds real evidence about an "affair," she will be gone immediately. Why waste ammo on a target who will take herself out?

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:45 PM

So now Community organizer is an insult.

Twist the magnificent call to help our fellow ciizens into a snarky insult? This is beyond the pale. Who is really better for our country.... mean spirited Rush Limbaugh types---bloated hate spewers---or community organizers?

A terrible regresion by the Republicans. A sickening night.

Fact Check

She should have used fact check before she read that speech.

She did not use the chef becuase she never moved into the Gov. Mansion, she did not want to move so she worked out of Anchorage. I hope the media does not let themselves be bullied with cries of sexism.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:42 PM

@Uncle Fester

Will Obama bring a knife to a gunfight? Stay tuned.

Corrupt isn't the same as tough.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:42 PM

Message to Hillary Clinton and her supporters.

Please do not let this bitter, nasty, snarky, cynical, pit bull in lipstick, polar bear hating, Queen of earmarks and oil drilling, steal the Clinton legacy.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:41 PM

I didn't watch it

But did she at least thank Obama for graciously defending her the other day, or was it all mean spirited, high school snark?

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:39 PM

Pay no attention

I knew they would pull this one.

Sarah Of The People.

The hardscrabble working family of grassroots America.

Pay no attention to McCain's jet, seven houses, billionaire trophy wife.

We are the Party of the People. Just like you.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:39 PM

So awful in so many ways...

The DNC convention was a love-fest but it was also competent and focused. They attacked Bush and McCain, but on legitimate and defensible grounds.

The RNC is a hate-fest. They attack based on half-truths, innuendo and sarcastic, Rush-Limbaugh-style jibes. It's chock full of ugly.

Ugh... If I were a Republican I would hide my face in shame.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 09:39 PM

I am firm, you are obstinate, she is a pig-headed fool

So when Biden goes on the offensive, it's fine. When Palin does the same, it's wrong.

When Biden's kids commit offenses as adults, it's never mentioned. When Palin's daughter gets pregnant and intends to marry the father, it's a scandal. (Presumably it would have been unworthy of publication if John Edwards had been the father...)

It's all about whose ox it getting gored, isn't it, Joan?
