Comparing angry Clinton supporters to women who stay with a "jerk" who's "difficult and brutal" was not the best way to defend Keith Olbermann.

  • Nowwhere else to go??

This is the letter I just sent to the editors at MSNBC.com

According to Joan Walsh at Salon.com Phil Griffin of NBC News had this to say about Keith Olbermann's coverage of Hillary Clinton:

"It was, like, you meet a guy and you fall in love with him, and he’s funny and he’s clever and he’s witty, and he’s all these great things,” Griffin said of the relationship between Olbermann and the Clinton supporters among his viewers. “And then you commit yourself to him, and he turns out to be a jerk and difficult and brutal. And that is how the Hillary viewers see him. It’s true. But I do think they’re going to come back. There’s nowhere else to go.'"

There's CNN! That's where I went. And that's where I'll stay during Hardball, Countdown, and Verdict (or whatever the Abrams thing is called now.) I will never watch any of those 3 again.

  • Disagree and agree

First I must disagree that MSNBC's coverage was unfair to Clinton. MSNBC has the best and most intelligent politcal coverage on TV, aside from PBS. The majority of the people working on MSNBC are the best in journalism today.

The problem I see is Hillary & her supporters are using MSNBC as an excuse for Hillary's poorly run campaign. What really aggravated Clinton supporters is MSNBC told the truth about Hillary and her chances of winning. Her supporters just did not like hearing the truth and still cannot get over the fact that after Super Tuesday Hillary was so far behind in pledged delegates she has no chance of recovering.

I do agree that Phil Griffin remarks were stupid and sexist. However equally stupid are women who act so childish that they must take revenge because Hillary did not win. Grow UP and Move ON!

I will keep watching Olbermann because I like his whit, his intelligence, and his willingness to speak the truth.

  • Check it out

Hey Joan. I heard a rumor that the DNC will not do a roll call for HRC at the convnetion and all votes will be forced to go to Obama. What say you?

  • Is it reasonable to assume...

...that eventually the articles focused on former Democratic Presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton will taper off (unless, of course, she becomes Barack Obama's running mate)?

  • must say I'm in agreement with Bernbart...

    Very well written and cogent.

Yeah, the "no where else to go" statement was not savvy considering who made it, but there certainly is an element of truth (sometimes the truth is uncomfortable).

Where else can you go on TV to get speaking truth to power besides Olbermann??

  • they don't have Clinton to kick around anymore?

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed the bottom has dropped out of the news over the last week or so, ever since Hillary Clinton dropped out of sight. CNN (which I generally prefer to other news venues) was reduced one day to all-day "breaking news" conjectures about who was on the Clinton "enemies" list. Suddenly cable news and newspaper editorialists were scrambling for subject matter for the 24/7 every hour on the hour Clinton trash fest. Who knows, maybe some of them'll have to try actual news reporting for a change.... They're still in love with Obama, and McCain just isn't nearly as fun as Clinton, it appears.

  • Griffin

Phil Griffin is not only arrogant, but in denial. First of all, if he believes that female viewers have nowhere else to go, he is sadly mistaken. I have not watched NBC/ MSNBC since the end of the primary, and I have no intention of watching that band of fools ever again. They are on ignore just like FOX. Now I get my information from the internet, Democracy Now, C-Span, and CNN.

Secondly, Griffin seems to be under the fasle assumption that his station's sexist commentary is limited to a few unfortunate comments here and there. Wrong. The sexist comments from just about all of the hosts have been documented, so I won't list them again, but the problem is so pervasive that it's now part of the culture of NBC/MSNBC. Do you think Chris Matthews, who thinks that women voters are like low hanging fruit, can be rehabilitated? HA! Do you think Olbermann, who decreed Katie Couric the "Worst person in the World" because she openly criticized her sexist colleagues, will suddenly acknolwedge his own shortcomings and change them? Yeah, right. He's a blowhard like O'Reilly now.

  • Anyone who says that "Clinton supporters have no where to go is an absolute fool

Whether it's Obama supporters who airily dismiss Clinton supporters by saying "they'll come back because they would never vote for McSame" or this business with MSNBC's sexism, the truth is there are other alternatives: the internet is open for business 24/7 and they can sit out an election or if really feeling dissed vote for McCain on the Naderite theory of making things worse to make them better. Anyone wanting the support of these Clinton supporters should remember that the Clinton supporters have something they need, votes, money, eyeballs, and not the other way around. The way to mend fences is not to take the attitude;" You and your crappy candidate lost so sit down, shut up, and do what your told." Come across that way and you won't get very far.

  • really looking forward to a non-Clinton oriented column

Joan - Clinton's out of the race. Lots of other things are going on in the world.

  • yes i am

an ageing white woman, life-long democrat....my husband and i didn't miss olbermann until he led every program with anti-hillary innuendo. we switched to PBS and we are SO very much calmer.

besides hillary bashing though....the worst persons segment is a stretch (o'reilly bashing fine with us of course), the oddball barely odd and best persons just tiring.

however, his coverage on primary nights has been stellar - keeping tweety in line.

  • Many other news sources

Me:"Now I get my information from the internet, Democracy Now, C-Span, and CNN."

    Add to that BBC America.

  • No where else to go? Don't count on it.

Olbermann's producer was a TAD arrogant and should be a little more humble about attracting his audience. But, still it's got to be said that Clinton's supporters are behaving badly. My candidate got forced out, my candidate is the only real winner (despite the delegate count) and coronate my candidate or I'm going to vote elsewhere. What is this, the 4th grade? Yes, there was sexism rampanent and Clinton's openly used racism and Republican smear tactics. She lost fair and square. Ladies grow up. Includes you Joan
