Obama won Oregon. Clinton won Kentucky. In Iowa, Obama skipped a victory lap and had gracious words for Clinton. So what's next for Democrats?

  • the influence of rap and hip-hop

Sorry for my ignorance - i am portuguese but i follow with much interest

your Elections. Is it possible that millions of Americans vote

for Obama only because they adore rap and hip-hop? (i'm speaking about young people.)

Is it true that people who earn millions with those 'musics' 'invested' in

    Obama's campaign?

  • One thing that irks me about Joan Walsh ...

... and other Hillary supporters: When are these folks going to tell us exactly how their candidate expects to win the nomination?

The only way Hillary can win at this point is if delegates from MI/FL are seated in proportion to the January vote (which would award Obama zero delegates in Michigan) and huge wins in the remaining territories, plus the overwhelming support of uncommitted supers.

I'd really like to know whether Joan thinks this is a legitimate path to victory? She seems to spend a lot of time extolling the virtues of this historic campaign without actually discussing the brass tacks of whether and how Hillary can win.

As an Obama supporter, I'm absolutely fine with Hillary continuing her campaign through the remaining contests. What worries me is the Hillary campaign's public comments (eroneously claiming a lead in the popular vote and claiming Obama needs 2,200+ delegates to win) indicate that she won't ever concede defeat under any circumstances and plans to take this right to the convention and initiate legal action, if necessary.

Would that be okay with Joan?

  • Joan sez: "Exit polls reported a quarter of Clinton's Kentucky supporters said race was an issue in their vote."

Yes, Joan, Hillary attracts racists. Isn't that special?

  • This is getting so old.

It seems like so many people in this campaign season are more concerned with the nomination than they are with the general election. The "history" being made is good for everyone, espcially those groups who are represented. However, the gay vote, the Latino vote, the native vote, the trans vote, the Asian vote, et al...I can't speak for everyone, but I think we'd all just like to get someone nominated who is going to fix this mess.

You are delusional if you think Hillary's continued run is actually helping. It's certainly not helping the party. It seems she's trying to do as much psychological damage as she can before she leaves. And once again, the media is encouraging it, because such controversy brings in the readers/viewers.

Hillary says that sexism is playing a major role in this - yes, thank you for the acknowledgement.

She says that racism isn't playing such a large role - you really have lost your mind, Hillary.

    And for what?

  • $31 Million in Debt??

According to the LA Times, HRC's campaign is $31 million in debt--just how many "hard-working Americans" is she stiffing? Honestly, how anyone could put forward HRC as the better candidate when she has run such an incometent campaign? Who is going to pay off this debt? Why should we trust her to run the country any better than she has her campaign? And this concern is aside from all the vile race-baiting, etc. she has demonstrated. As a white woman, I am embarrased by her victim stance, her running on her husband's coattails and the tendency of many of her followers to act as though being a female is the most important or the only qualification--I think they and HRC are setting the feminist cause back years by their stubborn and blinkered behavior. And Jacksonian--your post nailed it for me. Thanks.

  • @cagferreira

I'm sorry about your ignorance too. I'm 44, I despise hip-hop and I'm totally pro-Obama. I really don't think he's got the youth vote by a musical genre. I think he's got the youth vote because he has very impressive skills as a speaker, a great deal of charismatic presence and younger people tend to be more open minded. His campaign message is inclusive. If you really think about it, although I don't believe it is a factor in their decision to support Barack Obama, he is the only choice for something other than a draft for shoring up our struggling military. With McCain, that is coming. Hip-hop? Please! I think Dr. Zachary might call you a concern troll but I'm no expert.

  • PLEASE

Every time Walsh's posts get a letter response, it makes her hysterical (I am also using the word with all the white women-white men historical baggage that comes with it) posts more relevant. (Yes, I realize that I am contributing to this).

Let her posts ONLY attract Hillaryis44 or blogHillary type of letters: mean-spirited, vicious, and insular.

THE REST OF US NEED TO DO OUR PART TO MAKE THIS WOMAN IRRELEVANT. BOYCOTT SALON!

Or, only comment on Greenwald's posts...ignore idiots like Traitser (or whatever that moron's name is), etc.

If you must vent, do it on Huffington or DailyKos (the latter is entertaining, wicked smart, and all around a really fun place to have serious discussions.) Don't you find that responding to Joan is like responding to Taylor Marsh, with her alters of Hillary worship? And really, can anyone take Taylor Marsh seriously? SO why do people take Joan Walsh seriously?

  • @Mike LeP -- It's The Elephant in the Room that Salon Won't Acknowledge

    @Mike LeP

    I agree with you.

You are not going to hear Joan or Hillary supporters explain exactly how Hillary can become a elected (small d) selected party nominee.

There's an elephant in the room, and no one, least of all Joan, is acknowledging it.

Party said primaries in Michigan and Florida won't count. Obama AND Hillary signed on to it, fully, and publicly. Obama went so far as to remove his name from the ballot in Michigan. Hillary, already hedging her bets, didn't, but publicly said unequivocally that the results of both primaries would not count. Now, the ONLY remote chance she has in a nearly insurmountable numbers battle is to overturn the party's rules (and her own agreement), seat delegates from Florida, and seat delegates from a SHAM election in Michigan where her opponent wasn't even on the ballot. So she is subverting democracy. But she's casting it as an effort to disenfranchise the voters, and she's blaming Obama for not allowing these delegates to be seated.

It's self-serving, it's manipulative, it's gaming the system, it's changing the rules of the game after the fact, and it reeks of the sort of crap that went on during the Florida recount.

Hillary Clinton might as well be Katherine Harris, for all the integrity or credibility she has in this whole issue of Florida and Michigan.

    And you know what?

You're not going to hear Clinton supporters, or Joan, address any of this, because it can't be addressed. Because it's unethical, shady and undemocratic -- and suggests a pattern of subverting the rules, going around the truth to advance oneself, and it's NOT the kind of quality anyone wants in a president.

Joan can't defend it, and neither can Hillary's supporters.

That's why here at Salon, it will be ignored as a topic for articles or blog posts.

    Because it's indefensible.

If Obama were trying to pull this stunt, Joan would be all over it 24/7. She knows it. We know it. And we also are very aware of her deliberate avoidance of the topic, so as to not detract from Hillary's Machiavellian efforts.

And as an Obama supporter, I too agree that Hillary should be allowed to finish out the primaries. And then she exits gracefully, party reunites, Obama runs and wins. And if that is the plan, great.

But it's not looking like that is the plan anymore, does it?

It looks like she intends to turn democracy into backroom deals and manipulations, just so she can win. She's following right along with the Republican's banana republic win-at-all-costs mentality.

And my sense is, however Hillary wins -- even if it's by this method -- is okay by Joan.
