You are delusional..every single one of you
Every single comment right back at you except the infraction is sexism and 100 times worse.
It is not racist if it is true. Just like the laws of slander/libel, truth is an ultimate defense. Furthermore, IT WAS NOT RACIST. PERIOD. END OF STORY.
This is a sad sad commentary, and you are so blind that even when he loses in November you will still think it has something to do with his race. NOT.
Finally, as a white woman I want to sue Obama and every Obamaton for MISOGYNY in the 1st degree. I will ask for remedial education and one million "sorries" on the blackboard.
The one thing I can agree with you all is that the Democratic Party messed up bigtime. They traded Hispanics and whites (esp. white women) for Blacks, and this was a trade that should NEVER have occured. I know when I have been shat upon, and I have no problem taking my money and my votes elsewhere. And believe you me I will.

Missed the point
Joan-
I'm a minority and agree that a discussion is needed, but I think you grossly take out of context both Donna Brazile's comments and Sen. Clinton's. I'm an Obama supporter. The context of Brazile's comments were in response to Begala's statements and her point was the exact opposite of what you were implying. She talks about a broader and more diverse coalition. I think Sen. Clinton's comments were nothing more than the traditional slice and dice approach to politics. How is such and such person is doing with a particular demographic. We need a conversation about dealing with diversity, but the examples you give are not productive. Neither are indicitive of the kind of racial division you imply exists.

Obama's race card
I agree with the major premise of the article, that the Dems have a problem discussing race, but I don't get the attack on McCain's advisor for point out that one of the reasons for this awkwardness comes from Obama's campaign itself. They are hiding behind his race and implying, at least, that ANY criticism is somehow vaguely racist.

will someone please tell me why hard working white people will not vote for Obama?
I'm honestly trying to understand it. Yet from reading these boards I can only come up with the following reasons from Clinton supporters:
1. He might have insulted them in San Francisco by saying that they cling to God and guns and bitterness in response to government failing them.
2. He bowls a 37.
3. Obama supporters are so nasty, unlikeable, horrible, disgusting, brutal etc..
4. Donna Brazile and others have said the Democrats don't need them because of their new coalition of blacks and educated whites.
5. Some (like the 15% who told reporters this) aren't comfortable voting for a black guy. (I haven't heard this from Clinton supporters, but I read it on my own).
What bbothers me about this list is that only one of these items (two if you count not practicing bowling) did Senator Obama have any control over. And not one of these has to do with his policies.
Krugman today suggests that Obama doesn't talk in the same language as Clinton does, and thus he may be losing some support. And he may be on to something.
I also thought of this this morning. Possibly Obama's rallies and the way he speaks a kind of new political evangelicism is off-putting to Catholics stylistically. Maybe it reminds them (my boyfriend is Catholic...or at least a recovering one) of protestant style revivalism in a way that just isn't that comfortable..that seems tacky or not credible. Just a thought.
The truth is, today, we are a country, that has unfortunately become very dependent on stylistic choices and decisions. Yet what will happen between McCain and Obama in the fall is FAR from stylistic...there are major differences in policy and the future of this country.
I hope that the Democratic Party can emphasize the common ground between working class voters of various race and creed in order to create a wider tent. I hope that Salon will continue covering McCain's distinctive (frightening?) foreign policy proposals, such as removing Russia and China from the G8.
But maybe what Donna Brazile was clumsily trying to say, and that I agree with her, is that at least for the 15% polled in Pennsylvania...maybe there isn't a lot that can be done other than hoping that our country continues to make the kind of racial progress it has over the past four decades. I would say the same thing if Clinton was the nominee and 15% or more said they felt uncomfortable voting for a woman. How do we reach across divisions like this still in the year 2008? Or should the Democratic Party just focus on reaching out toward those voters who are more open to discussing economic or policy decisions rather than dwelling on what race or gender a candidate is? The latter seems to be Obama's approach, for the most part, and I think it's working.
Thoughts, anyone?
