Keep chasing your tail.
I keep hearing that Joan Walsh favors Hillary Clinton. Even if she does move on Obama people. Glen Greenwald clearly favors Obama as well as several other Salon columnists. She is an opiinion writer. Different strokes for different folks. This constant need to tear down anyone who doesn't support your guy isn't helping him in the long run. Its a big turnoff to a lot of people and is just what McCain wants.
1. Having fortitude is no substitute for good judgment, and to think that fortitude is a good quality standing alone is a show of poor judgment.
I give you exhibit A: Iraq.
I give you exhibit B: George W.
I could go on, but I won't.
I continue to expect more perspective in these articles and I'm always disappointed.
Like Weeping, I too feel used. I feel that many of us are merely playing supporting roles whose posts are intended to buttresss Walsh's fragile ego, in a bit of perverse reverse psychology. As in, "if all those [fill in the descriptor-male, black, etc] think I'm wrong, I must be right."
Candidly, I don't even get the article.
Is cowboy diplomacy what we progressives really want?
Here is what I view as the psychology behind this weirdness:
2. The M.S. of the U.S.
I think many white women who support Hillary do so because their own voices have been silenced by the strictures of their own families and communities. I have noticed that all of my black and white women friends who support Obama are more independent and self-made than the women who support Hillary.
We don't pretend to have balls. We just do the work.
Many of us were socialized to be in charge.
Last week a male friend and I discussed a highly visible female who is a strong Hillary supporter. My male friend indicated that the female in question supported Hillary because a powerful male politician and the woman's equally powerful husband told her to, and she never asked a question. Never. That is one weak woman. No "cojones" there. This is but one of many similar stories I've heard with this theme.
But this begs the question of who truly exhibits strength.
I submit that Obama is not weak; he is in fact strong.
He does, however, want the American people to recognize our own individual and collective strengths and to work towards a set of common goals.
Hillary represents the opposite approach-she is the George W. model of governance. She is the Mother Superior. The MS of the US.
She wants to make all the decisions. And Joan Walsh and the woman who love Hillary are expressing a need for a Mother Superior in their lives, (for reasons I have considered but have no place here). So they vote for Hillary, whom they love like the nuns, and they go about their lives, knowing the ruler/yardstick will be used on Iraq and Iran, pulled out from a pantsuit jacket when necessary, and that the social issues will be addressed with the efficiency of a Catholic Charities. .
It is a form of early to mid- 20th Century soft imperialism, of the "this won't hurt anybody too much and is really good for you " order.
3. Spankings in Lieu of Lectures:
I am reminded of my father's lectures in lieu of spankings approach to child rearing, which he adopted when my siblings and I had already become accustomed to getting a periodic spanking for some wrong deed. When we realized that the lectures were longer, and in some ways more punsihing than the spankings (we had to face up to and reflect on our misdeeds) we decided to ask for a spanking in lieu of the lecture. Dad would have none of it.
This what Hillary provides for us- and what some seem to seek: the spanking in lieu of the lecture. With the admonition of "shame on you. You bad, bad, girl/boy."
Obama, on the other hand, provides the less immediately aggressive, but ultimately more effective approach: You relect on your actions and take steps to change your behavior.
I vote for the second. It is the beter approach, nine times out of ten.
But then, maybe Americans just like to spank and be spanked?
Fascinating.
Hillary is running on experience. What kind of experience would lead her to support a Republican gas tax holiday?
This insanely stupid prostitution of a gas tax holiday is a perfect example of the difference between JUDGEMENT and EXPERIENCE. Obama has less experience than either of the other two. However, his JUDGEMENT is far superior.
Men love making Boxing analogies out of Political contests. I am fond of them and would liken this contest between Barrack and Hillary to the real knock down bruising fights between Rocky Graziano and Tony Zale for the Middleweight title, they were called Pier Six Brawls because they resembled the fights on the docks between longshoremen. Both cadidates are punching hard and someone is going to get knocked out. Hillary is the toughest and looks to be the eventual winner, begininng in North Carolina and Indianna.
Don't forget that women made up a significant part of combat troops for the Russian Army during WW2. Hillary has all the "testicular fortitude" of a fighter, a woman combat soldier in the Russian Army OR an American Politician.
You should try to be a bit more informed about what you post. Sen. Obama voted to suspend the gas tax three times, now he is against it.
Also, the major difference in Clinton's proposal is that the tax is paid for by the oil companies as opposed to the taxpayers.
Maybe you don't feel the gas price crunch, but the rest of the nation does.
What Clinton understands is that we need help now.
She does have balls. They're called Ovaries.
You have posted comments for the last 65 days here. Your letter count is up to 400. So I know that commenting is one of your favorite things.
I will be happy to read your article. Likewise, I want some feedback that shows that you have read my post. Here are the 4 points again:
1. Please comment on the Marc Rich pardon as it occurred during Hillary's 35 years in public service.
2. The NY Times editorial titled 'Missing Records" said that 'The public is still owed a more complete accounting of the sources and amounts of Mr. Clinton's speaking fees and business income.' Again, this occurs during Hillary's 35 years of experience. What role does a presidential candidate play in responding to valid requests for financial information?
3. As a Vietnam veteran who experienced enemy fire, I wondered how you might explain Hillary's repetition of a blatant lie three times in a short span and then joke about it on a TV show? Getting shot at is a memorable event.
4. Why did Hillary forget to read the 2002 NIE? Again, this occurred during her 35 years of experience. Why do you think Barack Obama, running for state office in Illinois, could stand before his constituents in Illinois and declare that the looming war with Iraq was ill-advised?
