Why Jeremiah Wright is so wrong

I applaud Bill Moyers for being fair to Obama's pastor, but their PBS hour won't chase questions about his grim view of America. Plus: More Wright tapes emerge.

The letters thread is now closed.

Joan should listen to the "I've Been to the Mountaintop" Speech by King

She should also read his works on poverty. Wright is not that far off.

Most people don't care. Let this go. There's a bill in the House to allow the banks involved in the subprime crisis to essentially regulate themselves. Write on that, and maybe prove Wright wrong.

As long as the press looks at this silliness and ignores the economic pillaging going on right now right in FRONT of us, Wright is correct, and Ms. Walsh is wrong.

You want Wright to be incorrect? write about the pillaging. Write about the corruption. Write about the poverty.

But poverty doesn't drive eyeballs, conflict does. How sad that the press has gone froma force for good and anti-corruption to helping to cover up the economic rape.

@racist odog11

writes: "Not let's use grade 1 math to determine when Hillary and Obama got to Washington..."

odog, were the first ten odogs worse than you, or better?

If you have anything to say about Coe's "Family" feel free to expound. If you don't then go sit in the pew next to your religious compadre, Joan Walsh.

What happened to Salon?

Why does Salon's board let you go on and on in your seemingly relentless attempt to bring Obama down with the most nefarious, under-handed, hate-baiting, race-baiting, polarizing, false controversy creating editorials? this news magazine used to represent a sanctuary of liberal, thoughtful, in-depth and sometimes counter-cultural analysis. Under Joan it has become a Fox news-like, hilary agenda promoting attack machine. And in the process, it has also come so close to racializing the entire dialogue that it has become a necessity for me to find alternative places to read balanced, thoughtful press. I find more diversity of opinion and perspective in the Washington Post and NYT than I do at Salon presently.

I recall Joan speaking about her devotion to civil liberties issues and poverty and race in her involvement at some New orleans conference. I have never once seen a single contribution by Joan that suggests she has an iota of racial sensitivity or concern about how people not of her demographic actually live and experience life. She has not displayed a single attempt to embrace a different perspective that may be shaped by circumstances dissimilar to those of a middle-aged, "tall", "good humoured", "baseball-loving" white woman. (the quotes contain descriptors Joan has added to her on-line profile with video attached, aka her hilary campaign blog, aka her Salon editorial page).

Shame on you Joan, for finding weekly ways to discredit obama's candidacy and the way some non-white folks live in such a race-baiting manner. Shame on salon for giving Joan a venue for her prejudice. Are there not enough right wing media outlets out there that do a satisfactory job?

My perspective is that of an outsider (from Canada, and not of black origin). However, I have never been as outraged or disappointed by the recurring base-level assaults coming from a self-identified "liberal". I know that readers' repeated outcries for joan's dismissal/resignation/move to Fox news have fallen on deaf ears. If the only metric for success was number of letters generated, then perhaps Joan has an argument for continued relevance. why do I maintain a hope that there resides in the Board some sense of journalistic integrity, liberal values and quality assurance that will cause them to re-think Salon's approach to news going forward. Or at least send Joan to sensitivity training...

Here's another take on Wright's interview from the huffington post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dave-winer/why-is-it-so-quiet-after_b_98763.html.

Still waiting for word on Obama's brain after the Wright speech to the Detroit NAACP.

Does Obama have a right-sided black brain? Or a left-sided white brain? Or maybe he's a Hybrid!

Anyway, it would be good to know before we elect him President of the United States. Particularly since we had JFK and LBJ as Presidents, and they talked so funny! Neither Rev. Wright or I can figure out how to spell some of those words they were pronouncing!

Ufortunately,Wright Is More Right Than Wrong.

I can understand Joan's criticism of Wright's tarring ALL Americans with the same brush when he condemns our foreign policies which he cites as being the cause of the 9-11 attacks and many other policy decisions which have resulted in unintended adverse consequences for this country. As a white veteran of World War talk I am always amused by the role most of the men who have played the leading role in starting this mess in Iraq never served in uniform. Rev. Wright served in the Marine Corps. It is indeed unfortunate that our citizens have yet to question why we are targeted by terrorists? Why not others such as Norway, Costa Rica, Ireland and many others who do not live in fear of another attack? Could it be because these countries do not have poliicies of bombing others or interfering in their governments with policies of regime changing and assassinations? As long as our country pursues such policies we should expect what we did to our enemies in the past as believing they share responsibility for what their governemtns did. We reelected W. Bush in 2004. Steve World War 2

@KKirsten

You say that Walsh is write about what Rev. Wright is saying. What is Reverend Wright saying? Obviously, you're hearing what Walsh is hearing, but not what a lot of us are saying. How about you cut the bull and tell us what you are hearing?

The unexamined question

We all know about the Obamas' closeness to Rev. Wright and their devotion to him personally. However, very little I have every seen, in written or spoken word, shows Barack Obama reflecting his black seperatist radicalism. However, there is some basis for suspecting that it reflects MICHELLE Obama's worldview. I have seen no piece on the Wright controversy has examined this point at all. Joan: has salon looked into this at all?

Joan Walsh, Meet Erica Jong

Just because a man is inspired by his pastor doesn't mean he agrees with every word his pastor says. Duh. Even a moron knows that. But inspiration remains important. And you will never be inspired by running stuff out of context and playing gotcha.

Our press has become a sea of triviality, meanness and irrelevant chatter.

God knows inspiration is always welcome. Moyers and Wright gave us that on Friday night.

You are such a total lightweight, Joan. And Erica Jong just called you a moron. Guess she must be one of us sexists.
