Why Jeremiah Wright is so wrong

I applaud Bill Moyers for being fair to Obama's pastor, but their PBS hour won't chase questions about his grim view of America. Plus: More Wright tapes emerge.

The letters thread is now closed.

Ms Walsh's so stunningly "wrong" take on Jeremiah Wright.

I am white, and yet I am continually amazed at the spectacle of privileged white people (like Ms. Walsh) informing the rest of us how "wrong" Blacks are when they offer a critique of this country that is based on THEIR experiences, not ours (i.e. white people.)

But what is TRULY stunning is Ms. Walsh's attribution of motives to Wright's behavior and words and her belief that somehow she can figure out Wright's motives and mindset, even though she’s never even MET him, she's NOT Black and she really has no clue on how the experience of most Blacks is so stunningly different than hers (no matter what was or is her class position) and therefore is hardly in a position to place motives on his behavior.

—"It sounds like it's the idea of America, its fundamental principles, that he's rejecting."

——[By the way, Ms. Walsh just what "idea of America" has Wright rejected?"]

—"I felt like he was trying to make the point that organizations that preach black separatism and focus on the real (as well as imagined) evils of white America are uniquely successful in strengthening the black community -- and further, that he's created another one at Trinity, one that is less deadly and delusional than the Nation of Islam, but still seems to think it's therapeutic to school its members in an extreme critique of American society and its thoroughgoing, ongoing racism."

——[Ms. Walsh, you "felt..."???? Frankly, I am not the slightest bit interested in your uninformed "feelings" which are nothing more than your projecting your "feelings" onto Mr. Wright.

——FYI: feelings" are feelings such as sad, happy, angry, etc., not motives for behavior.

——Oh, and how many of the thousands of hours of his sermons over the years did Wright devote to "schooling" his congregation in an "extreme" critique of American society? Admit it: you don't know any more of what or how Wright preached other than the selected snippets and sound bites released by the right-wing (and racist) nutcases who are keeping this controvery going for their own political benefit.

—“Is Wright trying to ruin Obama?”

—"Wright is sure that he is right."

——[Ms. Walsh, and you know this...how???

—“I'm sure Wright and Bill Ayers agree about a lot of things.”

——[Ms. Walsh, just how did you become so "sure" that these two agree about a "lot of things," especially since you probably haven't a CLUE about what these two people have in common since you've never met either one or heard the two of them discussing "things." And about which "things" do you think they agree?]

But the worst was Ms Walsh actually thinking she somehow has the right to place, or even consider placing a psychiatric diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on Wright, someone she has never event MET, as in:

—"I had seen short clips and I was prepared to argue that Wright is a stone-cold narcissist, unprepared to let Obama surpass him, uninterested in whether he's wrong.”

——[Ms Walsh, just where did you get your training in psychology so that you are fully qualified to, much less have the right to, even CONSIDER labelling Mr. Wright — a person you have never even MET — as a “stone-cold narcissist?"]

Ms. Walsh, your time and energy would have been much more productive if you had discussd how Mr. Wright's BEHAVIOR is affecting Obama's campaign, and maybe you should have considered discussing how his words feed into America's ongoing (if not "thoroughgoing")racism (of which you will get a LOT more evidence in the coming months if Obama wins the Deocratic nomination) and its irrational fear of "the angry black man." But please lay off the psycho-babble, and cease and desist placing motives on the behavior of people you haven't even MET or with whom you have absolutely nothing in common, experience-wise, execpt that you both are human beings who inhabit the same piece of the earth's crust that is the U.S.A. You are in mo more of a position than I am to judge or even try to divine Mr. Wright's motives.

Oh, and please tell us how Mr. Wright's words and behavior have ANY direct — or even indirect — bearing on Mr. Obama's fitness to be President????? Or how the prattle in this column makes us better informed voters — or even better informed political junkies.

A grim view of Salon.

Maybe talking about Reverend Coe would be depressing too?

You know what's really depressing, Joan? Seeing people I thought were once journalists be so blatantly biased for one candidate while pretending to be objective. Why not start your pieces with: "Here's my hit piece on Obama for today"?

Joan, Clinton has been going to prayer meetings with some of the most reactionary, anti-Democratic thugs and their wives (praying with their wives during her husband's term before she attained enough "power" to advance beyond the gender segregation) in Washington, DC. She has "prayed" with this cult who focuses on power. Some of her most reactionary pieces of legislation seem to have arisen out of her unholy alliance with the Santorums and Coburns of her flock. She has supported or cosponsored bills with some of these reactionary politicians with whom she kneels.

You talk about depressing. For all of the people who have suspected that Clinton was merely another politician whose ambitions outweigh her humanity, a glimpse into Coe's coven would be confirmation. No self-respecting feminist could support a regular at those gatherings. But then who said that Joan Walsh is a self-respecting feminist anymore?

Joan, do you think separating the genders when praying is a good thing? Does God listen to women's prayers with a different ear? Don't you find Coe's brand of Christianity detestable? And if you do, what does that say about your candidate? That it doesn't matter because you know nothing she says or claims to believe is true, and that the only that matters is what she stands for in your mind?

No, Joan Walsh's purpose here is to keep on smearing Obama and propping up any straw men constructed by the right-wingers. She has joined the choir herself, singing in harmony with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

Joan, you're getting nothing from Hillary except maybe the back of her hand if she's ever elected President. An altar to Hestia or Demeter would serve you better. And what to sacrifice? Your journalistic integrity. That's already gone. How about throwing the Salon subscription list into the fire?
