Why Jeremiah Wright is so wrong

I applaud Bill Moyers for being fair to Obama's pastor, but their PBS hour won't chase questions about his grim view of America. Plus: More Wright tapes emerge.

The letters thread is now closed.

Walsh deserves all this criticism

Sure, this is what we need -- liberal commentators repeating spurious right-wing talking points to criticize the Democratic candidates. I'm with John Anderson:

How about a feature article EVERY DAY about:

-McCain on abortion

-McCain on the war

-McCain on the economy

-McCain's associations

Too repetitious? Well what would you call all these Wright pieces???

If I were in a position that my writing could have significant influence on the outcome of this election, I'd consider anything I wrote that might help McCain in the slightest to put innocent blood on my hands. Joan, will you apologize when McCain bombs children in Iran?

my point still is

I am tired, and yes Africa is a continent and no that is not the point. To say that America is the genesis of all evil and that she must apologize and make right every alleged sin puts the onus on mostly innocent descendants of some founding fathers AND ignores that in every country and across every continent EVERY defined area (define it as you wish--tribe, city, state, country, street even) there is a power struggle and those with the most power win. To say that America is more evil for enslaving black people than when, for example, Black People in Black Countries enslave black people, is hypocritical nonsense that hurts the problem. ALL power struggles exist because people do not want to share, but sharing has to be a two-way street and both the good and the bad must be owned by both sides. In America's case, she must be chastised for the bad and recognized for the good as must her people. That being said I am SICK AND TIRED of liberals in this country ignoring the misdeeds all over the world ESPECIALLY those done by countries populated and run by people of color. THE WORST deeds, the WORST atrocities, the WORST crimes against humans are done in countries where the primary color is not white, and this is the damn truth.

Finally, sometimes the hypocrisy of you people really makes me think this is a bad dream and not real. You keep saying that we cannot judge anyone by association, but because I am from Texas you assign every typical trait (might say you are making some damn ASSumptions) in the book. In addition to being the furthest thing from a racist, I have done more this year alone for people of color and poor people than Mr. Obama will do his whole life. Just because you can't handle the truth I tell, don't kill the messenger.

Oh, and AJ you are really some hater aren't you. You can't see because you are so sick with the hate. Read my posts regarding taking race/gender from Hillary and Obama again and again until you get it. Honestly, if you didn't hate whites and women so much we might get along.

Oh, and for that post on how great Wright is, you totally missed my point. See, this is how it goes. Obama said Wright suffered from horrific racism his whole life (poor, hungry, no good schooling, no choices in life, beaten down but good) so who are we to judge him. I pointed out that he had a sweet life and was gifted and made good. See, my point is that they are both liars. See, you missed my point.

Finally, if actions speak louder than words, what did each of you do today to help change the world? And typing does not count.

Oh, and it did make me laugh my ass off when Hillary challenged the man to old fashioned debate, and he chickened out. Pluck, pluck, pluck. Scared of his own shadow this one is...and I wonder why....

I actually feel sorry for Obama, because he doesn't have a sense of who he is and how many people he is hurting. This will make for many lives of suffering....many lives....

asher my heart

When Hitler started organizing they ignored him until he came for them, and then it was too late. God help us all because between the hatred and the stupidity we are probably lost already.

oh Proud Texas Girl...

have you asked any European Jewish people circa 1945 about that?

I'm cancelling my subscription

After many years as a loyal Salon subscriber, this commentary has sent me over the edge. Ms Walsh, your magazine used to have such interesting a nuanced views on race, sex, gender. Lately, all I've seen is veiled racism in your posts, on Broadsheet, in the letter thread. I give up.

Listen to all these whiners

Cancel my subscription! I'm outraged! How dare she! I only want to read glorious happy things about my deity! You're all a pack of mewling idiots, and McCain will savage your guy in November.

Shocked and disappointed by this entry

Your interpretation of the Moyers interview is very sad.

@weeping for brunnhilde

wow!

Whether you support Obama or Hillary or Joan or whatever. I really appreciate your contributions.

BTW: I'm writing from San Juan, PR, and in the last ten minutes the streets have been turned to small rivers all at once by a spectacular and sudden rain.

@ProudTexasGirl

I can change what my country does. I cannot change what some other country does. Thus, I focus on what I can change.

Some of the worst atrocities in human history have occurred in Europe. Some 6 million Jews exterminated, along with a comparable number of gypsies and Eastern Europeans. Weren't the perpetrators white? All-in-all, European wars have cost the lives of over 60 million people during the 20th century alone. I wonder if any other part of the world can match that.

The "over" on when Obama has to say, "No, I disagree with Rev. Wright on the notion that black children's brains are different from white children's brains."

If the "over" is tomorrow by 11:00 a.m., I am betting the "under."

There was so much crazy shit in that speech, Obama might not even get asked about Rev. Wright's JFK imitation.

Sunday, April 27, 2008 07:59 PM

@ dog-walker

Thank you, I appreciate yours too.

As to the rain, I hope it's not dangerous. If not, it must be an awesome thing to behold.

Wright is a slow-motion disaster for the Obama campaign

and the gift that keeps on giving for John McCain.
