In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one who candidate who understands the working-class needs.

"I don't think [Obama] really gets it that people are looking for a president who stands up for you and not looks down on you," she said this week.

Wath I find distrubing about this "bitter campaign, is the fact that Hillary is using it angist a member of her own party.

Does anyone remember when Nancy Pelosi, first became speaker of the House the rigth wing repubian called her a San Farncisco latee Liberal. ONmnay occations they have called speaker Pelosi an eltist.

The Clintons have spent years fund raising in San Francisco to the "so called" elitists and up the hill from where I live south of San Francisco. Yet she clearly emphasized "San Francisco" in her attacks against Obama because she knew knew these kinds of statements had been used before angainst Democrats. Her real goal was to give the republicans something to work with, so she can say to Super Delegates Obama is not electable. Ironically she has used "bitter" attack more than McCain.

Hillary wanted to take this from the issues because Obama was coming up in the polls in PA. He shot back quickly, but now he needs to back off an get back to the issues.

Up until last week, I thought well lets play this out until the end of the primaries, but my feeling right now is get her OUT before she ruins this it for the Democrats.

For those of us emphasing the importance of looking at the ideas of this election and not getting distracted by the various forms (bowling, attire, word-choice), it should hardy mater wat the woords looks like. Plus, I don't spell well and am way to impatient to spell check most times...

"I'm trying to figure out what your recommendation means that we move forward together as "one nation". Do you mean that you are ready to move forward with people who support Bush? I can't stand what that guy has done and I have actively worked to mitigate it in my little ways, but I am ready to work with him or any of his supporters. That goes for Clinton as well."

Therein lies the problem. Watch fox lately? Same as 2002. No admitting mistakes. No repentance for past actions. divide and conquer. Lie spin and discredit. Propogate for profit.

this is why clinton supporters are republicans now. The same. Birds of a feather. I am all for working together. But I don't consider what I and others are getting from clinton supporters (sexist cult, gay, idiots elitist and on and on ) to be moving forward. it's turning back the clock to 2002.

I have to expect it from the gop. They are about to be rendered irrelevant for a genration, due to incompentace and fascism. they have had almost full control for 30 years. Tehy wasted it. What I cannot except is the same gop gossip and tactics from liberals/progressives. We have enough enemies, us liberals. WE must fight the media on all leval, to get truth out (radio tv news gop internet sites). We have plenty of internal enemies trying to divide the nation for profit. those that would sabotage change and growth and the future. You must expect teh scared out of touch gop, lied to and propogated agaisnt for decades on end, to do this as a last ditch effort. What I take issue with is, after the sweep in 06, we held the keys to the castle. We had the power and the voice of the american people. What did the clinton di fi rockafeller reid pelosi democrats do? What is their apporval ratings? Lower than bushs?

The clinton moderates are cowards. They fear the gop much. No backbone. I said before, how cna anyone with a spine vote democratic? How can anyone with a brain vote gop? The american people have lost confidence in our political system. Why? We no longer have a representative govenrment that represents us. Very few are represented, the gop is way to much. We have a one party system, two sides of the same coin. the gop was an opposition ticket to clinton. Where was bush's opposition party? Even after the 06 sweep? no backbone.

that is where I'm coming from. Teh gop are terrorists (based on the definition of said word). Like the terrorists in iraq, iran, indonesia, or whereever, all they can understand is strength. We must stand strong against them, not bow to them and adopt their tactics. this is not a game. this is not a cival lesson. The gop, clinton included is not only dividing america. they are dividing familes. Fathers sons, mothers daughters, grandparents and grandchildren.

I am former army infantry 11B. Those young men dying everyday don't care about our civil discourse. They are not all republcain dittoheads, as rush and hannity would have you believe. I fight so glen greenwald is free to say whatever true he wants to say, without getting silenced by fascists.

Having said that I think you should be free to say whater you want, clinton supporters. But there must be accountability, where the gop has none or credibility. We cannot become the gop to deafet them, as clintona nd other moderates have done. We must be above them and bury them for a generation, unless they admit mistakes jail their criminals and move forward as a nation.

those are the stakes. I couldn't care less about yoru civility. Think abou tthe big picture. If your son grand son borther died today, how would you feel? Would you still be civil and bash others for their passion?

Pat tillman. Remember his sacrafice amoung other true patriots. good americans are giving everything for this nation. What does the politicans and propognadists ever have to sacrafice? other than credibility? Forgive me if I don't pity joan or rush or hannity. The right-wing propogandists have blood on their hands.

WE CANNOT BECOME THE GOP TO DEFEAT THEM. We cannot become fascists to defeat the fascists, where the gop became terrorists to defeat the terrorists. To fear the future is to risk eliminating it.

The street must run both ways carol. The only way we effect the change we are talking about is engaging, rather than going the clinton route and backing down, the gop on their turf and playing by their rules. They know nothing else. they are called dittoheads for a reason. it's not their fault. If they had another way, they make take it. They don't realize their is a choice. They have been in th cave for decades, chained to propgoanda fear intolerance division hate and so on. their chains are now cut. We must help them leave the cave. it's bright at first, but once the eyes adjust, you are free.

And so will america be. Free again. think about the big picture carol. Civility does not matter. only truth. my movement cannto defeat the gop without idealsists like you. But you can not, and neer have in the modern age, defeat the gop with the spine and backbone people like me provide. Don;t shut us down, with the gop. We are all differant. Like said her doesn't mean we can't be on the same side. But truth must be the standard by which we judge everythign else.

Again. Say sorry gop, clinton supportrs. Stop the sabotage. and let's move forward togehter. Or continue on your path. But don't expect not to get called
