he lost the election
I'm saying this from the vantage point of a supporter who donates to his campaign. He insulted a group of people he desperately needed to make inroads with. That was possible considering the dreadful state of affairs we've been in for the last number of years. He had an opening, but he slammed that door shut.
Even in their complete context his remarks sounded incredibly condescending and smug. He made a very valid point, but his choice of words and the setting they were delivered in were a disaster. He insulted a group of people who were not disposed towards his campaign to begin with, but were at least giving him a look. He gave them the opportunity and excuse to reject him.
So far the Republicans' toxic Holy Trinity of issues, gays, guns and god, haven't made much of an appearance. Obama has re-introduced them. He sees them, rightly, as a distractions. the group of people he insulted truly see them as "values." These are the people who would have a bbq with George Bush than with ______. They elected George Bush twice. They buy into the fear mongering tactics of the Republicans. These are the people who have been very willing to vote against their own self interest in recent years. This was not a small misstep.
Hillary Clinton is acting as nothing more than the Republicans' stooge. She's Renfield to McCain's Dracula. The people who were insulted will flock to McCain far before they flock to Clinton. As I first read his comments late last week I felt the air rushing out of the balloon. In plain english, he fucked up royally.

"Obama's wordy approach to cover his ass won't be read by many."
Sorry, but that's all I read of your wordy post.
Obama doesn't even have to reply to win the nomination. But, your point is well taken for his supporters: They should hit Clinton hard and short with questions on her profiteering from trade deals and the war years.

No one likes to be turned into a cultural stereotype by an amateur psychologist
The problems I see here are several:
1st Obama came off sounding like a psychology professor--
he analyzed the people of Pennsylvania down to cultural
stereotypes, thereby taking away their dignity as individuals.
2nd Along the way to doing the above he analyzed their faith
and hobbies away as defensive strategies with some not light
weight pejoratives thrown in ("bitter" "cling to").
3rd No one likes to be analyzed into a cultural stereotype,
it is demeaning (e.g. Obama is like many over-achieving blacks who speak in intellectual psycho babble and drink chardonnay)
4th He analyzed away important strengths (e.g. people's faith in religion) as in the same league as pettiness about immigration.
5th All of the above offers proof to the argument that Obama is insensitive (read: "out of touch") with the impact of these
words and issues on the people he is analyzing.
6th Perhaps worst of all. It seems like a rookie mistake that offers evidence that he is not ready yet for prime time.

Joan, I may have misjudged you,
you can write more than propaganda for Clinton! In an increasinginly bitter fight, this is one one the most thougtful articles I've read. THANK YOU for publishing his remarks in full. I have say that Obama's remarks do not seem that out of line even without the context, but I live in a blue-dot in a red state so I see a lot on anger towards cities and minorities (recently the county government added sexual orientation to the list of "official" discriminations and one would have thought every citizen must now get buttfucked or something) that the level of hostility between the sububurn and formerly rural populations and urban areas is quite stark. Thanks, again Joan for a reasoned article,
Cyn

@zenhead
Wow, your screed almost made me spill my mocha frappucino all over my dashiki and birkenstocks.

If you're not bitter, you're rich.
I just hung a sing on my door, next to the Obama sign:
DAMN RIGHT I'M BITTER
-
Why Wait?
If the Democratic party "becomes" him - as he said it would if he were the Nominee and the next President - then I will leave the Party. I'm sick of these ignorant, over-educated mouth pieces shilling for rich, white, leftist snobs who could care less about middle class Americans and care more about sticking it to their far right-wing nut case peers!
-- Rambling Rose 22
Yeah, cause, you know, who wants to support things like no war for profit? abortion rights? gay rights? economic equality and opportunity? regulation of monopoly? building infrastructure? privacy? building diplomacy?
Yes, let's get rid of all the overeducated, leftist elitists who won't pander, because the last eight years of being run by by the compassionate righties who whisper sweet nothings into the middle class's ears and fuck the middle class's ass have done wonders for our country. Let's have more of that, please!
I'm holding the door, Rose. You can leave any time you want. I won't slam it on you on the way out. Good luck with the Rethugs not doing the same.

The Truth
We can argue about the expediency of Obama's words, but anyone who isn't angry and bitter after the last 7-1/2 years -- beside the rich, who have done extremely well -- HASN'T BEEN PAYING FUCKING ATTENTION!!

Clinton's Remain Desparate!
Throughout this campaign, The Clintons and Media, in desparation have scrutinized and spinned everything from Barak Obama's bowling, to the words he chooses when addressing the various issues, to what his pastor says.
In the mean time The Clintons and Media have done very little to introduce anything of any significance, unveil the secret ideas of Hillary's White House Pastor, or clearly addressed any important issues facing America.
It is more obvious that The Clintons and Media are really attempting to divert Votes and public confidence in the One Known candidate, Barak Obama, that will bring Change to this Evil Political Arena in America.
When John F. Kennedy Jr. begin to express his Political asperations back in 1999, just before the 2000 elections, this same old Establishment assassinated him. Such as they did his Father, JFK, about 40 years earlier. John's plane did not crash, it exploded.
This Group is Desparate to maintain "Status Quo", continue illegal aggression on other nations, spend endless tax dollars on the Military Complex, control the hearts and minds of people worldwide, impose their self-serving idiotic ideals on the masses.
The Clintons and Media must be stopped in Pennsylvania. Barak Obama presents the best chance to stop Cheney/Bush Ideology in this Nation. The Democratic Nomination must no longer be diverted or prolonged.
