I think what Obama said is absolutely true
I don't find his remarks "uppity" or "out of touch." He is simply explaining how people vote against their own self-interests. Bush won Texas in 1994 on a platform of "God, gays, and guns," according to Molly Ivins (god love her soul!), and this is repeated nationally by the RNC. So, I think he's quite on the mark.
I also find Joan's column here a little over the top, and her anti-Obama bias is huge. However, I do give her credit with being honest about it. I still disagree with her strongly in that category: I find Clinton's ACTIONS to be much more elitist than Obama's (remember Clinton says that words don't matter, it's action that matters), conducting her campaigns as if she is inherently deserving of a coronation.
Obama is correct that the Clinton administration left behind a lot of the working class. This is the problem I have with Hillary, is that she is too centrist. I'm willing to give Obama a chance to be president, as his record is not as centrist as Hillary's.
