I am just sad she is adding to the diversion
I don't have anything new to add to this discussion that has not been said in the 120 previous letters. I am just sad that Ms. Walsh is adding her voice to the diversion Barak Obama mentioned instead of either really discussing race (instead of some pro-Hillary backing ala Fix news). It adds to the growing narrative that Hillary backers will do ANYTHING; even mislead. It is hard for me to think someone as smart as Joan Walsh doesn't know what was said and meant here.

@david sugarman
You know, I don't know what the brothers' conduct meant -- Murray was pretty clear that he thought that by his younger standards they had racist views (and he was no saint himself -- but he was born in the teens and was in his 80s when he told me about this) but not unusual for a white person in Washington DC in those days. So, sometimes they were typical, and sometimes they were not. At the time he was a child, he was asking why is dad and uncle had done something that caused such a fuss.

Can we really have a conversation?
First, I don't agree that Obama's speech about race was as good as liberals in general think. The moral equivalents he set forth were jarring in their falsity, and the speech was obviously political, artfully constructed to avoid answering the questions about his allegiance to Rev. Wright Instead of answering the particular questions, he side-stepped the questions and broadened the topic to provide a lecture on race in general. Slick political move!
I think a conversation about race would be a disaster at this time. Racial recriminations exist among all races in the country, and shouted accusations don't make for conversation. I think it would be far better for government, educational facilities, charitable foundations and the business communities to embark on affirmative action for all disadvantaged people in America, not excluding anyone or including anyone based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion.
If after some years of that effort there has been some measurable success, then it MIGHT be possible to have a national dialogue not on race, but on finding solutions to the problems of poverty and inequality which stunt the growth of millions of Americans of all races in this country.

The only danger
of Obama's speech was that he wrote a speech that could not be reduced to sound bites and aired on t.v. It is silly that people (meaning you, Fox news, and rabid HRC supporters) are hounding on this.
As a white woman, I was raised that all races are equal but picked up on this feeling that I should be more afraid when a black man walks down the street. I am under 30 and I know how pervasive this feeling is among many white people, especially those born in rural areas or areas without many blacks.
HRC referred to Gennifer Flowers as "trailer trash" which is certainly a negative white stereotype. But she is 100% white (we assume) so she can get away with it. The fact that you are so bothered by these comments shows that you see Obama as too black to be able to make generalizations. Imagine if Edwards had made the slip, "typical white person." It would have gone unnoticed, especially if he was talking about someone in his own family.
Obama explained this quote perfectly well on Larry King Live, and sure he could have said it better, but part of his speech was saying we are never going to move forward unless we let people talk about their beliefs, which is why I respect his refusal to reject Rev. Wright. Why don't you reflect on Bill Clinton's recent comments in N. Carolina about patriotism?

Children.....................
A country composed of children pretending to be adults, as 40 year olds get implants, and we obsess over the latest fad, while dividing ourselves into little crowds of those we consider "cool". All the while crying and whining about meaningless shit and having not the slightest thing to do with what the adults should be worried about.
No we carry on about this blather- and get this- whine and cry when our country is broke, when cities go underwater without services and thousands are killed and maimed........
Lets look at some of the "grown up" questions being asked about Obama- shall we?
Did he throw his grandma under the bus?
Does he love his grandma?
Is she mad at him?
you don't think grandmas gonna be OK with Grannie?
Why does Barry hang out with Wright?
Why doesn;t he hang out with someone we approve of, someone cooler?
Is he gonna turn the country over to the black folk?
And Hilary.......
Did she vote for the war cause she wanted to be accepted by the jocks?
Did you hear she was at home when her BF shagged Monica?
thats sooo uncool........
(giggle, giggle, snicker, snicker)
Meanwhile, the adults have to worry about losing the job, paying the rent, wondering how they are gonna pay their mortgages, the coming draft for endless wars........
Keep it up children. You deserved Bush. Because if this is the "liberal" and "progressive" side, well, Cheney is more than we deserve.
If this is in any way a concern- Barrys grandma, monica, Wright, etc........ Then country is truly screwed beyond imagination.
This is THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION OF OUR LIFETIME!. War with Iran, getting out of Iraq, the collapse of the dollar, Global Warming, $5.00 gas, massive unemployment and HOMELESSNESS...
And yes, people like Joan, like Oreilly, like Tucker, Rush, Hannity, Blitzer, Rove are responsible. and they do this ON PURPOSE. Nobody, absolutely NOBODY is this stupid.
Your being played like chumps and children. They are robbing this country blind while they park you in front of the boob tube and you buy into it. Suckers.

Joan Walsh's viddy
On Friday I went to see Sen. Obama speak to a crowd of several thousand in Portland, Oregon. He was eloquent, fair-minded, warm and enthusiastic. The crowd loved him. There was no evidence that his former pastor has cast any sort of cloud over his candidancy.
- a typical white person
ps nice porno soundtrack on your video Joan.
