I live in Florida and guess what? We already Voted! "Just count our votes!"
The Democratic party already f@cked FL and MI over once...it's too late, no matter what they do now, their authoritarianism is cioming back to bite their a$$.
People already cast their votes in both states. If candidates wanted to tow the authoritarian party machine line that's their choice. The delegates should go to Hillary, and Barak should get his deserts for being a democratic party puppet. Personally, I don't like either of them, so this has nothing to do with my own preference. The wallpaper won't be much different whether the background is sage or aqua.
Florida should not revote. There is an issue of disenfranching those voters in FL who live there mostly year round but head north etc during the summer months. FL population is much more migratory, unless you are going to start early voting right now, you risk disenfranching these voters.
Besides, both candidates had a level playing field with an actual advantage to Obama in that he had cable ads (I know my parents saw them) and the good press coming out of SC while Hillary was getting clobbered with Bill is racist stuff etc. The fact is Hillary won by a substantial margin and should not be denied those delegates by having a revote that may disenfranchise a good portion of FL citizens. What about absentee ballots already cast. Do people have enough time to get new ones etc.
MI is different because the ballot did not list all candidates, though I am not sure that Obama should benefit from being short-sighted in not keeping his name on the ballot. There was always a chance those delegates would get seated with an agreement that superdelegates would be stripped. Obama assumed and got burned. But in the interest of fairness, maybe it should be revoted. MI also has a less migrary population so the demographic shifting would be less.
My two cents. And yes I am voting for whomever wins the Nom. Enough with the petty squabbling. They are both good candidates.
yes count the votes
But this only, once again, shows up the bizarre inconsistencies in our primary and voting system. Iowa and New Hampshire have always had huge and unearned power in deciding our national fate; when another state understandably challenges that by moving their primary earlier, they are "punished" and disenfranchised. Perhaps defying Democratic Party rules was a clumsy and ultimately self-defeating strategy, but what's another way to challenge the status quo? Rotating primaries? A single, blitzed-out cross-country primary day? I, for one, had waited for a year to vote for John Edwards, only to have him drop out 6 days before I could vote. I found it very strange to pull a lever for another candidate. What might have happened if other states had been allowed to weigh in?
No, Hillary should not be allowed to "seat" the Michigan and Florida delegates without a revote. Yes, they should revote, whatever the cost.
Now, about those touch-screen voting machines...
Florida and Michigan vote again? We voted already, you idiot!
If due to childish games in the Democratic party you don't like when we voted, well that's tough that your candidate didn't win.
This whole issue of the DNC not liking when Florida and Michigan held their primaries shows the leaders in the Democratric party to be idiots who are going to lose this elction again to Republicans. Then we'll see the continuation of this Hundred Years War in Iraq. When on earth will you self-serving, pwoer-hungry juveniles grow up?
No, they should not vote again. THEY ALREADY VOTED!! No other state gets to do "do-overs." Their voice should be heard. I believe the people who do not want the votes to count are supporting Mr. Obama when it is clear, THE VOTERS CHOSE HILLARY. The superdelegates from Michigan and Florida should declare their spport for the clear winner in those campaigns. It truly is what is fair and remains within the boundaries of the preset rules.
Only in America can we stand up and say our vote does not count. It blows my mind to think in the cradle of democracy, we now tell the world the votes of the people do not count.
It is a shame the media has played this into headlines and not into what is best for our country. CNN sold us on going to war with Iraq, now they are selling us on our next President. Saturday Night Live played up the "truth through humor" on what CNN has done during the debates.
This process has turned into a campaign on age, race, and gender. I thought we were better then politics based on discrimination. Shame of the democrats for telling us our votes do not count. If they DID count we would not be having this discussion today.
We have history in the making...the downfall of America as a Superpower.
Hillary should be the candidate.
Not sure why the campaigns would be required to pony up the dough to pay for a revote. It was the state parties that violated the national party rules and voted when they weren't supposed to. Let the state parties pay.
To those who say "Florida already voted, just count the votes", I would ask how many people stayed away and didn't bother voting because they knew their votes weren't going to count anyway? And since there wasn't really a proper campaign there how valid are those results? With regard to Michigan, Obama had his name removed from the ballot so there's no way to apportion delegates from the previous voting there. So clearly there's no way you can use anything that happened there.
I agree this was a bad night and a bad week for Obama. I don't think he needs a radical retooling, but he should sharpen things up a bit and stick to running against her instead of looking ahead to the general. And dump Austen Goolsby overboard ASAP.
In a perverse way this could actually really help the Democrats in the end. The GOP will have to either spend resources attacking both of them in the meantime before a nominee is selected or they will have to sit on the sidelines and shut up. And McCain will be so totally overshadowed that it will be almost as if he doesn't exist. While it is true Hillary and Obama will be beating each other up a bit, I think it pales in comparison to the attacks the rightwing machine will use. They will have the stage to themselves now with more news coverage and free media than you can shake a stick at. Plus they will be able to keep on raising money at a prodigious rate because the competition is so close.
