The sooner we get rid of all the Clinton's the better off the country will be. I have talked to so many women voters here in North Carolina and not one of them said she would vote for her. They are the reason for nafta and she needs to accept that fact and move on. She is a dirty politian and does not need to be our president. Scare tactics are so low and that is the kind of president that she will be, low, cheating and dishonest. LInda J
Obama is a Christian, you moron, and always has been. Hussein is the most common name in the entire middle east. It's like saying don't vote for an American named Smith, or a Chinese named Lee. Get a grip. Ease off on the cheap vodka. Read something that doesn't have pictures.
I am not going to say which way I think things should go, other than to say we need to go Democrat. The powers that be need to get together and for the good of the country put pride aside and go with a strong ticket. Fighting all the way to November is not going to help anyone, except the challenger, McCain. I am waiting for the day when the promises transcend into reality. Our country is the best in the world but we need to get with it. Research and development, space travel, healthcare, securing American jobs, protecting and supporting our military and veterans. After every war in our nations history we have turned our back on the returning veterans. I am hoping that this war will be different. It seems like regardless who says what when they get elected the battles start and nothing gets done. I am not sure who our representatives are protecting but it is not normal Americans who are footing their bills. Please lets get serious about the issues and move on from our current methods of politics. We are all waiting for some action.
Contrary to Ethics Professor's sentiments above, I do not want to see you begin policing your letters for proper politeness any more than you already are. I agree that people should not be allowed to post anonymously - I would even say they shouldn't be posting pseudonymously - because words have consequences. However, requiring a regular Salon moniker is all that is needed to address that. Now that you have done that, everyone who posts here is responsible for what words they put out, and no further content policing is necessary. Please treat us like adults here.
And remember, dear readers, should you be offended by anything you see here: they are only words. Grow up and deal with it. Or, better yet, speak up for yourself, on your own behalf.
I think rerunning the Michigan and Florida primaries - if done other than ham-handedly - could result in not only peace on the Democratic side of the presidential campaign, but also prosperity.
Here's how:
1. The Party or the candidates or both pay for the new primaries. Party ads blitz the airwaves. There's a handshake between Obama and Clinton to go after McCain in the ads, not each other, and they talk about it constantly, as insurance against backsliding. Let nobody but GOP officials and the right-wing opinion media sling mud at the two Democratic candidates.
2. If the count is decisive, we all respect the results because they were achieved so fairly. (Remember the laying out of groundwork for this in public, so that Dems generally can be informed about how open and fair this is).
If the count is not decisive, we go to the Convention knowing that the will of the people is pretty evenly divided.
Either way, the will of the people rules the day.
3. From the moment the decision is made, the candidates stand near each other a lot, applaud each other a lot, and the runner up swats down rightie slanders. This is important. This will take a temporary abandonment of ego for the public good.
In Obama's case, it would be seen as a confirmation of his gracious character. In Clinton's case, a down payment on her readmission to the good graces of the left-leaning public.
4. Let the fund-raising begin! If steps 1-3 go off as planned, both candidates will have restored the luster that Clinton's candidacy initially, and Obama's campaign frequently added to the Democratic side of the '08 presidential campaign.
5. Democratic president, Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress. Peace. Prosperity. Reconciliation. Then comes the hard work...
Is this a pipe dream? Only as much as Obama's Super Tuesday win seemed before it happened.
Cheers.
The Democratic Party will look anything but democratic if the presidential nominee is decided by the political machine, otherwise known as the Superdelegates. On the other hand, allowing Florida and Michigan to vote again is utter nonsense. They knew the consequences of their decisions and ought to accept the consequences. So, given the distinct probabilty that neither candidfate will have a majority of pledged delegates by Convention time, here is my solution. Put aside ego's and "I owe you's", and make a deal whereby Obama bows out, Clinton picks him as a running mate, and Democrats occupy the White House for the next 16 years. Clinton gets to be president before her age becomes a factor, Obama acquires 8 years of experience and then run for president while still in the prime of his presidential years. The combination will receive the combined present support of both candidates-money, women, African Americans, Hispanics, young people, middle class workers-and kick McCain out of the ball park come next November.
At first I thought Senator Obama would make a great President, but now I have changed my mind. His inability to deal with pressure and his bungling of the NAFTA issue is mind bogling. If one TV ad and the administrative blunder of his campaign workers causes him to lose Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island in one full sweep....he has no chance to withstand the Republican onsluaght once he is elected. Hillary is a bit creepy but at least she is a fighter and can withstand the looming onslaught of the republicans....
