Shuster: journalist or pundit?
As far as what he said, I found it out of line. I heard it live, and cringed. The defensive email exchange he had with the Clinton campaign immediately afterward showed that he had no clue that he was offensive. That begat the apology the next morning which half-hearted, at best. MSNBC did the right thing. And I do believe there is a definite pattern of sexist commentary among their on-air personalities.
If I were David Shuster, I'd spend this "time-out" figuring out which career path I wanted to take from here, pundit or journalist. I don't think the two mix well, and punditry will cast a dark shadow on his investigative work, and make it suspect. Not sure he knows that...
