Letters to the Editor

Seriously? Four Clinton mentions.
Even Hillary Clinton supporters seemed awed by what Obama had done, as am I.
What you mean here is "Even Hillary Clinton supporters like myself are awed by what Obama has done."
Joan, you're not fooling anybody. You haven't been for quite a while now. And this 'article,' purportedly about Obama, in which you mention Clinton about four times and Edwards (who also beat her) not even once, just makes it ever clearer.
Look, seriously, just go ahead and say "Salon's editorial board endorses Hillary Clinton." Your readers will respect that (although many of them, judging by the letters, will disagree with it). And you won't have to keep pretending to be impartial.
-
Really?
I honestly don't even see her winning a primary. My man is Edwards, but unless he pulls off an absolute miracle in New Hampshire--in a few days--it's over for him. There's no way he could remain a challenger. All those Edwards voters will immediately flock to Obama. What chance would Clinton have against such numbers? None.

Joan, Joan, Joan....
I see the first two posters beat me to glaringly obviously bullshit statements in this piece already. The biggest laugher has to be "Even Hillary Clinton supporters seemed awed by what Obama had done, as am I" to imply that "i" and "Hillary Clinton supporters" are not in the same camp.
Joan, seriously, if salon's coverage of this campaign is not a conscious reflection of your political feelings, then you really need to do some soul searching and self-reflecting. Don't hide behind Glenn, the one independent part of this site (well, King too, but he doesn't count).
As for not seeing this coming, wasn't there poll after poll which predicted just this (once you figured in second preference votes), including the last two big polls (DMR and the Zogby)? You might not have wanted this result, but it was clearly a distinct possibility. Of course, no one could have seen the levees breaking in Katrina except for all those published reports which predicted just this.
Geesh, this campaign's brought out the worst in you and salon.

And, the Iowa Winner issss.....
...Oprah!
(35-30, women for Obama over Clinton--and, now watch the pundits fall all over themselves to distance themselves from the pooh-poohing they were dispensing over the last several weeks re Oprah's allegedly chimerical celebrity pull)

Loitering with Intent......
Dear Ms. Walsh,
Would you please (as a sort of birthday gift for me, if nothing else) take just five minutes or so and write the article you would have written had Hilary Clinton won last night in Iowa?
I'd love to see what you write.....and I bet a shiny red apple that the Iowa caucus won't be dismissively characterized as a "strange throwback"....nor will your headline imply that one may very well win in Iowa, but that doesn't really MEAN much, since New Hampshire's coming right up....etc....
By the way....Edwards beat Clinton....and you don't even mention him? Any particular reason for that?
In any case, thank you for your posting.
Sincerely,
David Terry
P.S. After you write these things, does Hilary send you flowers or chocolates?

Blinkered
...by the thrill of Hardball, how could you see it coming?
I felt Obama in my gut from the moment of the convention speech. This is a GOOD country that is sick of itself. Heartsick.
HRC is an actor, Obama an orator. I think the MSM, and perhaps Salon (except for Glenn) are too cynical to feel the contrast between HRC's canned, rehearsed lines and the actual passion and depth of thoughtfulness that fire Obama.
And, god bless him, the unmentionable Edwards.
HRC is admirable. To my ear, though, she is always reciting at people, not speaking to them. Both Obama and Edwards speak to me. And that's my whole self: brain, and heart.
I have no fear that Obama will not produce sound policy. He's smart enough to pick a good cabinet if he wins. I hope if Edwards can't battle back that there will be an Obama-Edwards ticket.
Talk about change. Change America's face to the world with Obama, change America's embrace of its people with Edwards.

I have seen no enthusiasm for a Hillary Clinton nomination. I'm confused by any media report suggesting she is the Democrats best choice. She's clearly the worst choice in the (now slightly less crowded) field.
Hillary Clinton and I have nothing in common, and I can't she how she could possibly represent me. Raised in well-to-do Park Ridge Illinois, educated at Wellesley, a politician's wife. She's never known what it's like to be working class, and it's been two decades since she walked around without a Secret Service escort. She lives in a bubble designed to keep people like me away from her.
Barack Obama may live in a bubble now as well, but it's a new bubble, and I believe he still remembers what it was like to live on the outside.
That is why I will vote for him.

Making the same request as the others
Joan,
By writing this when you were tired and upset, you really showed your cards. Even if this had been a post on the Clinton site it would still seem a little like sour grapes ("throwback," "I didn't see this coming," "On to New Hampshire"). The lack of any analysis about what this means is a real giveaway -- at least any analysis beyond what this means to shocked Clinton supporters.
Given the covert, generous coverage Bush got in the MSM when he ran, and the outrage that caused among people who come to sites like Salon, your unacknowledged identification with Clinton is a real problem.
There's nothing wrong with supporting her, but you shouldn't do it on the site, or if you do, you should explicitly endorse her. Please endorse her now. We already know. It's a matter of salvaging journalistic responsibility at this point. While you are at it, you should apologize for not doing so earlier.
