transforming herself from "Judi" to the queenly "Judith," even though her father insists, "Judi is what she was born. I don't think we called her Judith ever."
Now that's what I call a "class act."

What's good for the goose
The RNC has no problem trashing any aspect of a dem's personal life, and we shouldn't have a problem tying Rudy's poor life choices to the idea that he'd make poor choices as the most powerful man in the world. This is war, and the fate of our nation is at stake. The Dems didn't make these rules, and we're still afraid to play by them, but until we go for the RNC's political jugular, we're always going to be perceived as weak. Hit them in the gut, knock em on the ground, step on their chest until they scream uncle, and when they scream uncle, step harder.
We didn't make these rules, and until we run the show, we can't unmake them either. So that means making tough choices, and it means being just as politically tough and savvy as they are (as long as we stay within the boundary of the law). Don't give them an inch.

How come ...?
He shared an apartment with a gay couple in-between marriages? Huh? Didn't he have enough money for his own apartment?
-
Giuliani's decisions about his personal life are fair game
But not yet!! He's the best candidate Democrats can hope for, so cut him some slack for a few more months. Wait till he becomes the nominee.

Silly wife, sure, but...
Mildly interesting reading (of the junior high cafeteria sort), but it says a lot more to me that NY's firefighters hate him. I would think that THAT would be the damning stuff for a candidate who's been riding the charred coattails of 9/11 for the last six years, not a strutting, annoying wife. Of course, I'm a Democrat, so what do I know about what sinks in to Republican minds.

Personality vs. Experience
There has been so much written about Giuliani's personal life that one would think that it is the only factor standing in the way of him being considered a qualified presidential candidate. Given the republican penchant for hypocritical knee jerk moral conservatism, I am sure that Giuliani's tendency to dress in drag, hang out with homosexuals, and fail at marriage will count against him. However, given the fact that he will be attacked by his own party on all of these issues, I don't believe that Democrats need to join in on the fray. Why sully their hands with garbage when there are more substantial grounds on which to attack?
Giuliani is running for president on a 9/11 platform that holds him up as a national hero and experienced leader, but how much experience does he really have? Admittedly he was the mayor of the biggest city in the US, but does poorly managing a large city really prepare you for running the most powerful country in the world? (See the latest issue of Harper's for an excellent accounting of Giuliani's accomplishments or lack there of, during his time as mayor) Giliani has never had to deal with national level political decision making, let alone international decision making. He has never worked with a coalition of governors, nor with congress in a meaningful way, so what exactly qualifies him for the presidency?
Obamma is currently being attacked from the left and the right for having too little experience and for being a neophyte on foreign policy. Tell me how the same accusations can't be made against Giuliani in spades? The man is all show and no substance, and that is where he needs to be attacked by Democrats. Leave the personal attacks to the Republics.

Killed puppies?
Well, if Rudi dumps her I'm sure Michael Vick will offer her a warm understanding shoulder to cry on.
-
If Hillary Gets the Nod,
I want this fellow Giuliani to be the one she's running against. Maybe we could concern troll the Republicans into making him the nominee.
-
Oh, great
Now we're slinging mud too, huh Joan?
Jeez. I could happily live my life without hearing a single further detail of a candidate's personal life. I care less about this than about Lindsay's rehab, if that can be imagined.
WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THIS??? I'm confused. When the GOP makes personal attacks, they're being juvenile, but Giuliani's marriages are fair game? ("We didn't make the rules": Seriously?!?!?!)
I implore you: don't discuss this. It's stupid and pointless and only further degrades our system of elected government/ national dialogue.
I know it's fun to point and laugh, Nelson style, but try to resist the urge. You look like a bunch of adolescent hypocrites when you do it.

the m-f''n progressives is actin' like conservatives
I'll let Talib Kweli say it.....
"You go to church to find you some religion
And all you hear is connivin' and gossip and contradiction and
You try to vote and participate in the government
And the muh'fuckin' Democrats is actin' like Republicans"
....all's fair in politics?...they did it first?...well then, we need to stop judging conservative tactics...MLK shoulda busted heads instead of turning the other cheek...and so on.
Or we can be guided by, and act upon different principles....
sheesh

some advice, Joan
Listen to some of my fellow Democrats here and don't engage in sleaze! Leave that to the GOP! You know -- THE ONES THAT IMPEACHED CLINTON. I swear the old saw is true: liberals won't take their own side in a fight. Also, be ready for Chris Closet-Case Matthews to bare his nails defending his big strong Daddy Figure ... well, the one you'll be discussing. He has so many.

Starr's Myspace
36 year old? More like 46. Bet she loves to be accused of being Guliani's gal. Very motivational!

Rotten Cheese
Joan: I think you're being led down a tunnel with rotten cheese at the end as a woman expected to be more interested in gossip about the candidates than the issues--and the sooner you get out of it the better. Doesn't it simply pigeonhole blogland in the average viewers eyes?
The same NYT Op-Ed page that sourced Greenwald's attack on O'Hanlon had an a-political piece by Nicholas Kristof on Bryan Caplan's book "The Myth of the Rational Voter, Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies." It's a reminder the issue of education has not yet come up in the election--aside for the rejection of "no child left behind." Isn't that more of an issue than whether Ms. Giuliani wants to be called Judi or Judith? Haven't we had enough of that low level crap?
Aren't you and Salon interested in enhancing the dialogue rather than reducing it to absurdity? I think Salon deserves the publicity but aren't their limits?
