But this is my last Ann Coulter post of the week. Really.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • So, Elephantman

Are you a 'wild-eyed' Edwards hater or one of those tame-ass Edwards haters?

  • Elephant watches Gray's Anatomy?

I've seen clips of the whole Coulter quote, and yes, she did call John Edwards a "faggot." That was the word she chose to use; and yes it does make her "a racist or a homophobe." Nor am I aware of any racist or anti-gay slurs being used against Republican presidential candidates at any Democratic gathering comparable to the one Coulter was addressing or on a corporate media show such as GE/MSNBC's 'Hardball.' The Gop should be ashamed.

There might be people on Teh Left who are as hostile to civilized discourse as Coulter; but such people wisely are not allowed anywhere near the corporate media or serious political gatherings. As long as GE/MSNBC (and TIME, etc.) provides platforms from which lunatics like her can spew hate, Dems will be placed in the awful position of having to either try to ignore unelected ratfuckers like the Swift Boat Vets for Bush or wading into the mud with them in order to respond. But never do I see any Gop wives being forced to defend their families from accusations of enjoying their child's death, etc. (And I hope I never do.)

  • Here's My Bottom Line On Coulter

It's not her fault, it's her parents.

  • fair and balanced ... and completely wrong

I can't believe how this stor is being covered in the msm! The descriptions of the exchange imply that this was a "Yo Mama"-type contest of trading zingers. Or else it was restrained school debate-team expo.

That's nothow itseems in the video I saw. True, we couldn't see Elizabeth Edwards, but we could hear her perfectly well. She remained on point throughout the conversation, communicated a clear, simple message without resorting to shouting, bullying, or distrating segues and as hominem attacks.

Ann Coulter, in contrast, kept raising her voice, snorted and laughed, tossed off "Yeah, right" and other comments, interrupted frequently, tossed off several rhetorical red herrings, and told outright lies and distortions that needed to be corrected by a chagrined Chris Matthews. (My favorite = AC "I never said that." CM: "Ann, you said that yesterday.") And then, she went on a completely insane tangent, shrieking about illiterate juries. And of course, she fidgeted, played with her hair, smirked, and rolled her eyes the whole time.

To me, the story is as much about Ann Coulter's complete inability to hold an adult argument as it is about what was said.

  • Leave her alone

Leave the woman alone. Most of what she says and writes is complete drivel, but every now and again she writes a column that hits the nail on the head.

    When she said:

Six imams removed from a US Airways flight from Minneapolis to Phoenix are calling on Muslims to boycott the airline. If only we could get Muslims to boycott all airlines, we could dispense with airport security altogether/i>, she was just saying what everyone actually thinks.

Her column about Mike Nifong, the bumbling and mentally confused Durham prosecutor in the lacrosse rapist allegation case, is a good example.

It is precisely because she dares to go where no other journalist dares that she sometimes comes up with some good stuff.

And at least she has a sense of humour. Talking of which, she can be more effectively countered with humor than with shrill arguments.

I like the one about how Bill Clinton told her he was gay so as to spare her feeings.

  • Coulter

Has had a corncob up her butt ever since she wrote HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS in the pre-impeachment/Senate trial time of Clinton.....And then it turned out that they were not high crimes and misdemeanors.

  • Most

Of the high pitched, obnoxious rhetoric of the republican big mouths is in direct response to.... A.)a larger and larger majority of the country finally and fully realizing the disaster the conservatives have given us......and B.) this realization taking shape at the ballot box.

The Coulter/Hannity/Limbaugh etc. reaction is going to get more belligerent after the 2008 election.

  • Although

I suspect Coulter, Hannity, and Limbaugh are secretly rooting for Hillary...They are sick and tired of defending the indefensible. That gets old, and as desperately as they might try, it's damn difficult to mount any offensives other than stuff like "faggot." In brief, the carnival barker insulting passerbys trying to get them holler back.

They've been jealous of the dems hammering away at Dubya. They want to get back to the full-fledged pitbull minority status. That suits their nature best.

  • Coulter Is Not An Idiot

She is just hopelessly backed into a corner.

At one time the biggest cheerleader for the "smaller government" but minority republicans, against the "big government" liberals.

Then her party takes total control of government, Whitehouse and Congress for years, and they set new record highs at all levels of government, and in all ways--from spending, to governmental powers, to secrecy, to pre-emptive war and nation building.

That's backed in the corner. So Clinton, Gore, and Edwards are fags.

  • Elephantman, answer the question next time.

Elephantman wrote (I want to capture the complete context): "Now as for your question to me, I think it is pretty clear that Ann Coulter was not seriously accusing Edwards of being a homosexual man. Is that the way that any of you took it? Are the Salonistas that humor-impaired? What Coulter was doing, first and foremost, was making fun of the msm kerfuffle over Isiah Washington and the ridiculous handwringing among the Hollywood elites who so richly deserve any ridicule that is sent their way. Secondly, she was making (in what was probably a highly oblique way) fun of Edwards' calculated, prissy, self-absorbed persona. Rightfully so. Look, I hate Edwards. You might not. You're going to like a lot of rude anti-Bush humor. I happen to like humor that trashes Edwards. It doesn't make Ann Coulter a racist or a homophobe.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

My question to you was, why couldn't she talk about Edwards? And you answered a very basic question with a convoluted answer.

I'll help you out. She couldn't talk about Edwards because she thought that she would have to go into rehab for using the word "faggot". It's not that difficult, is it?

Thus, your original accusation that Joan was "wrong" for saying Anne Coulter called John Edwards a "faggot" is, by itself, disingenous. Because Anne Coulter's "joke" was clearly calling John Edwards a "faggot". And Joan was correct in stating it so.

Now to your convoluted answer to my simple question. I agree Anne Coulter was not accusing John Edwards of being a "homosexual man". In fact, try retelling Anne Coulter's "joke" by replacing "faggot" with "homosexual man". Even for an Edward's hater, you have to admit the joke doesn't have the same punch. "It turns out you have to go into rehab for using the word 'homosexual man'". Bomb. Crash.

The problem with the "joke" was that she used the denigrating slur, "faggot", to make her joke extra funny for her sycophantic fans. "Edwards! Faggot! Har! Har! Woo!".

My feelings about Edwards are irrelevant to the discussion and yours should be as well. And so are my feelings about Bush. But since you brought it up, I still don't think the joke would be funny if Coulter called Bush a "faggot".

Frankly, the Bush humor I enjoy best is just hearing soundclips of him talking.
