My two cents
I am not here to comment on gender. I am just here to say: Joan Walsh, you're hot.
-
yep
It really is fun to watch them all debate at last. I also enjoy Matthews most of the time, though some of the things he says at times make me want to tear my hair out.
Your enthusiasm makes it even more fun. Thanks.

Why do you keep company with Joe S.?
Joan, you are always on Scarborough Country. Why don't you try Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity? Their viewership is 20 times larger than Joe "six-pack" Scarborough.
I do agree with you that Chris Matthews is a real political junkie and can be tough on Dems particularly the lefty types. Matthews was really tough on Bill Clinton back during impeachment, but I don't think he holds that against Hillary. I think he sees Hillary as an overly scripted political lightweight who is not "the real deal" to use Joe S. explanation for everything.

My My My
Chris Matthews is the apotheosis of craven dickwaving hack. The man was a benchwarmer, a nothing until he discovered one day he could win a 7 figure contract. All he had to do was stand up on his desk and scream "Clinton" 3 million times as vodka spittle flew from browned lips. Honestly, A JFK Peace Corp Democrat? Yeah so is Dick Morris, his soulmate. I would pay to see that hydrogen head explode on air like the Hindenburg.

From Joan Walsh
Oh, come on RealName, tell us what you really think!
No, I know all that, and still find him oddly compelling. But I will try to get over it.
-
Is Chris Matthews that great?
Let me be critical. I have never had high regard on Chris Matthews, not because any ideology reasons, but because he has never demonstrated to me that he has any intellectual depth or special intelligence to occupy half-hour of public time everyday. So, in this regard, I am surprised at Joan Walsh's high remark towards Mr. Matthews. Anyway, I don't know who is Joan Walsh. But for Ms. Walsh to praise someone who is not that remarkable makes me think not that highly about her too.
-
Is It Over Yet?
Just checked out KO interviewing Governor Richardson. Keith seems to have lost his sense of humor a little lately. Probably too many death threats from the Guns and Ammo crowd. And there's nothing more unnerving than knowing you are "an enemy of the State" and having all your communications tapped.
So I guess that means the debate is over. Great. But why the fascination with Chris Matthews and what about Gene Robinson? Wikipedia says he is a bishop in the Episcopal Church. Was he a moderator or what? Somebody help me out here.
And yes Anonymous is on to something (or maybe "on" something) regarding Joan. She is a pleasure to watch and gives as good as she gets. That doesn't sound quite right but you know what I mean. She presents the progressive viewpoint intelligently and with a lot of class and style. And I'd think that if she were a man.....but I wouldn't be as interested in watching or hearing it.

Cuddly Chris
And speaking of adorable moments with Chris Matthews: did you see him talking with (now) Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) on the night he was elected? I thought he was going to start crying -- I was almost in tears myself!
That was a great night that'll keep me giving him the benefit of the doubt for some time, but honestly, half the time he makes no sense to me at all. Okay, more than half.
And (new subject) can we please, please, please stop calling Senator Clinton "Hillary"? I don't particularly want her to win the candidacy, but everything about calling her by her first name screams that she's not to be taken seriously. Same with referring to Democrats as "Dems" -- augh! Let's stop it!

From Joan Walsh
pvslayer, I have thought about the "Hillary" v. "Clinton" question a lot, and because she is using "Hillary" in all her self promotion, I think it's fine in most contexts. But yes, every once in a while it just feels condescending.
Tester was another one of Matthews's manly man-crushes, but I liked that moment, too.
However: He was awful in much of the post-debate spin, especially when it came to his beloved gender issues, praising Hillary's pearls and declaring Michele Obama hot. Unreal. But on the other hand, he was also the only one who got the complexity of answering the question about an al-Qaida attack (he handled it better than I did, in fact): That there is no country called al-Qaida, so striking back isn't a simple thing.

incredible
Walsh, I admire you, but Oh. My. God. You CANNOT be SERIOUS. Matthews, more than any other mainstream media "star", has been absolutely trashing democrats for about, what?, the last 10 years now? And making millions off it?
No one was more unfair to the Clintons. No one was more unfair to Gore in 2000. And this campaign season, he's already begun trashing Hillary Clinton at every opportunity with nasty, gender-based insults that reflect, as Bob Somerby calls it, his disturbing "throwback values".
It's just simply astonishing that this guy, overwhelmingly the biggest idiot in our mainstream media - this sexist millionaire buffoon - would garner praise from Joan Walsh.
I just can't get this stuff into my mind anymore. It almost hurts.
It was physically painful to read this post.

I confess
I like him too, despite his raving sexism. He said Nancy Pelosi (at least I think it was Pelosi, not Hillary) would have a hard time leading because her voice was so shrill and House members would not be able to stand listening to it. Oink, plus pot calling the kettle black. Still, I like the show a lot of the time despite his dislike of women and his hatred of all things Clinton.
CNN is all mealy-mouthed idiocy any more, and FOX is full of braying, smug white guys and overly made-up babes. You can at least listen to Matthews, Olbermann (I love that show) and Scarborough. (Tucker is lame.)
