Ms Paglia's academic career

Those who care about such things will know that Ms Paglia does not hold a doctorate.

She earned a BA from Harper College in 1968, and an MPhil from Yale in 1971, but was unable to complete her PhD. There may be reasons for this.

According to Wikipedia, our self-described "Amazon" became famous for nearly coming "to blows with the founding members of the women's studies program at the State University of New York at Albany, when they categorically denied that hormones influence human experience or behavior. These women (whose field was literature) attributed my respect for science to 'brainwashing' by men."[47] Similar fights with feminists, lesbians, chauvinists, homophobes and academics culminated in a 1978 incident that led her to resign from Bennington a year later.[48]"

It is probably fair to say that she does not play well with others. But no mind: she is never in error, so her manners hardly matter.

The digital troll

I don't read her articles anymore either. Why bother? She is a pathetic, ugly, mean-spirited troll spewing out provocative bullshit in an adolescent attempt to "push buttons."

How do I know she's a troll? At this time, there are 275 letters. I'm not sure why the editors of Salon subject what they assume is a liberal audience to this mean-spirited a-hole's musings. I gather from letters that she blamed Matthew Sheppard for being murdered by homophobes. Typical. And exactly why I don't read her crap.

Enjoyed most of it!

Except for her last bit of the piece(skip it) I really enjoyed Camile Paglia's article. I do disagree with her on religion as well as some of her politics although we concur politically in this case. I also find some Judeo-Christian values coming through her writing even though she is a sworn atheist -- is God working through her?

Most other Salon articles do not appeal to me - it's my choice to go back to reading Drudge and Newsmax.com.

P.S. OK I admit I am about to put "The Hunger" in the 1st queue position on my Netflicks account.

@ centerright

Yes, God is working through Ms. Paglia! How do I know? Because God told me so. You see, I prayed to God and God told me that Ms. Paglia is His chosen servant. God, by the way, sounds like James Earl Jones, but not the hard-breathing Darth Vader-y James Earl Jones, but rather the grandfatherly James Earl Jones in those Jack Ryan/Harrison Ford movies, except God doesn't get cancer like that James Earl Jones; God just gives cancer to us! However, God does speak in a strange idiolect; His word choices are exactly like mine. Weird, huh?

God also told me to tell you to give me your money.

@Xrandadu Hutman: "What's your points?"

I think you got my point the first time, and as I review your other posts (which I must say are legion) I have to confess that your inclusion in the address line of my post was my mistake. My point was a complaint about the vitriol and disdain for others that so permeates these post communities. Yours, by contrast, are not and exhibit insight as well as receptivity. Sorry.

@ Bill E Pilgrim

“Well that was funny. Do you actually not see the hypocrisy in what you wrote? On the one hand writing a lengthy critique of letters you took the time to read that you didn't like, and on the other hand admonishing people that if they don't like something they should just not read it?”

Thanks for appreciating my post. I’ve always thought that humor can bring people together. However, based on almost no reaction to my letter, my hope to save mankind is rapidly diminishing.

Now I can answer your question whether ot not I see hypocrisy in what I wrote.

The answer is NO!

Yes, I read all the letters. Apperently, being educated and vicious are not mutually exclusive characteristics. But is not a point. My point is as follows: I never suggested that those vicious people should not be allowed to publish their letters here at Salon. On the other hand, many of them, including you, demanded that Salon stop giving a forum to Camille Paglia just “out of some odd notion of free speech.” Do you see the difference?

As a matter of fact, reading the letters has broadened my horizon. I don’t think I would find anywhere else the following:

“As for the silly free speech arguments, of course Paglia is free to write about anything she wishes, as are the many readers responding here. But many of us PAY for the content on Salon; I have been a loyal subscriber for years. When paying subscribers see part of our subscription dollars going toward paying the likes of columnists we abhor, it is legitimate to call for Paglia to be replaced by a different voice.” -- Andrew J

Thanks to Andrew J, I just discovered a new definition of a “free speech.” Any author is free to write anything he or she wants to as long as the people who “pay for the content on Salon” approve the writing. It’s never too late to learn.

@Cassandra13

I absolutely agree. Perhaps instead of water boarding, our military can acquire crucial information by reading Paglia's columns out loud to suspected terrorist detainees. They'd fold like napkins.

Anger shows your true colors

I continue to be amazed by the shrillness and anger of the left. Seems to me Camille is pretty clear on where her policy leans. And just because you don't agree with her when you feel like she is defending person you do not agree with (Palin) or a position that is not up to your more altruistic standards, you participate in the type of character drubbing that proves her points about the Northeast media.

Since democracy only works if civility and morality rule, you show your true colors as preferring the sort of fascism that overtook much of the world leading up to WWII. You would sooner burn the world down than admit that someone else's own circumstances and view also have credibility. The left has become a brood of narcissistic, hate filled fools who now feel like they have the inalienable right to destroy those around them so that they can feel superior.

I really never thought I would say it but the conservatives as a whole appear to be the more open and transparent group now. No doubt that it will start to show in voter sentiment...no one likes a shrill know-it-all.

Its also sad that the biggest loser in all of this hate filled spew is the type of true debate that produces the best results for the country as a whole.
