Ruth Alice asks "Are those letters even real?" !
You need to get out more Ruth - it may come as a shock to you but even in 2008 your pals and gals haven't yet managed to stamp out ALL opposing views to your own! I know how freedom of speech and expression is a total anathema to many Salon readers and especially those linked to modern academia !
There is nothing to look up to in Sarah Palin, that can't be found in other female leader; 99% of whom can speak in complete sensibile sentences and have their facts correct at the same time.
To overlook what Sarah Palin stands for, just beacuse she is a female vp candidate, is an insult to all people who support women's rights.
This artical was trolling of the worst degree and disappointing that is was published at salon.
"The question that keeps popping up for me is whether Palin, who was born in Idaho, could possibly be part Native American (as we know her husband is), which sometimes seems suggested by her strong facial contours. I have felt that same extraordinary energy and hyper-alertness billowing out from other women with Native American ancestry -- including two overpowering celebrity icons with whom I have worked."
What the hell? Why would that be the question that "keeps popping up" for her? Forget about Palin's policies, her questionable past as mayor, etc...the real quandry is, does Palin have that Cherokee grandma princess in her past that gives her the blood of a noble savage?? Inquiring minds want to know!
Paglia's use of Native Americans to "spice up" her opinion of Palin is disgusting. Keep your gross fetishes to yourself, Paglia.
She pays the rent by being a babbling idiot. It just doesn't get any better than that.
Hi Camille,
I don't always agree with you, but find your work refreshing and provocative even if it is self-consciously so. Difference is a great thing when intelligently discussed and good writing is one of life's great pleasures. So in the same playful and verbal spirit I must demur from your pyrotechnic prose in the name la Palin's protection. For the record, I went to a mediocre school and have spent my life trying to climb up and out from the culture industry's lower rungs. I'm Italian-American, too, and know what the bottom-side of an upturned nose looks like. So it's not a classic "snob" who says he can't take this woman seriously. Editing did not cause Ms. Palin to meander endlessly and pointlessly through her interview with Ms. Couric. Incoherency is not a technical charge, it's one of education and polish, both of which she lacks. There is a difference between the muscular and the cutting. She is characterized by the latter. If hers are smarts, they are smarts for the pool room brawl, not the G-8 conference. Her lack of depth is almost painful to sit through and her "vitality" smarmy schtick. Mr. McCain's choice was designed to to be sexy and change the subject, which he has done so often now that we don't know what he plans to do other than blacken pages certain chapters to "The Barack Obama Story." He got his "bump," but the long-term effect has been to undermine the candidacy. Whatever her brand of feminism - a marginal question in a national election - people I know of all stripes and persuasions have concluded she is not prepared to be president, which is what vice presidents are sitting around waiting do to. Her nastiness is growing with her irrelevance. The McCain campaign's continuing implosion is partially to her credit and she will carry the bill back to the Great White North and her prior anonymity.
Regards,
Stephen Siciliano
Is Camille Paglia talking about the same woman I see before me? Dressed like a Watergate call-girl? Scrunching her nose and winking like some bubble-haired weather girl? Married to a man who belongs to an anti-American secessionist organization? Who belongs to a speaking-in-tongues Bible cult that entertains crackpot Bible-thumpers who cast out "witches" and who blame the Holocaust on the Jews and which maintains an armed-to-the-teeth secret militia known as Joel's Army that seeks an overthrow of the American government and establishing a fundamentalist Christian theocracy?
Is this, as Camille Paglia asserts, the new face of feminism? On what planet?
Why does Salon continue to promote Paglia as some relevant intellectual which she may have been long ago? Can't it see what everyone else sees? That she's become the crazy aunt in the attic?
I don't underestimate the fascist Sarah Palin. She's unqualified to be Vice President, but that's not her fault - it's McCain who irresponsibly put her on the ticket. In Alaska, she managed to bully lots of people in lots of ways, all of it well-documented. When she couldn't bully someone, she fired him, or tried to fire her in the case of the librarian who wouldn't censor books. Camille Paglia might be a bit smitten with her, like Rich Lowry of The National Review, who apparently masturbated while watching her debate, but Paglia shouldn't think with her crotch. Palin is dangerous in the way that all mean-spirited, selfish and self-righteous God freaks are dangerous. She believes she is THE ONE. She's not. She's just a small potatoes politician chosen by McCain in hopes of convincing unhappy Hillary supporters to jump on his bandwagon. Unfortunately, there's no bandwagon. There's just a doddering old hack who's let Karl Rove acolytes run his campaign and persuade him to do their bidding. After he loses the election - and let's pray to God he does, and work like hell for Obama until November 4 - Sarah Palin will no doubt get her own reality show, where she can play the flute, wear a bikini, and shoot wolves from low-flying airplanes.
Camille doth protest too much -- Sarah Palin certainly has gotten under her skin. What else will explain her craze this week for all things Frontier Baroque?
Camille:
I think that you are 'hot' for Palin and are allowing this to cloud your thinking about her. She is a nasty piece of work as evidenced by her recent attacks on Obama. Essentially, she is calling upon the crazies in this country to do him harm. This is playing with fire. Is she so stupid?
I do not find her lack of good english and grammar charming in the least. She is 'redneck stupid' as far as i am concerned.
Biden was a complete gentleman in that debate. Her theatrical leering winks and over done you betcha's were irksome. Again, calculated 'redneck stupid' more offensive than the real thing!
