Nobody's dummy

Liberals underestimate Sarah Palin's vitality and -- yes -- smarts at their own peril. Plus: Obama's presidential air, Biden's condescending mugging, feminism's lost sisters.

The letters thread is now closed.

Are you serious

I just do not have the energy to dissect your garbage on Palin. In short, you were wrong about Madonna being a strong role model for women. Madonna has been a burning effigy of feminism.

If a man, that man would be the laughingstock of this nation, with the exception of the right wing. Even though her physical beauty has given Rich Lowry an erection and made you squishy all over, most people do not operate on that plane. We the great unwashed know that our economic troubles will not be solved by a witty rejoinder or snappy sound bite. In short, Palin is Nixon and Reagan at their worst, and hopefully we do not have to suffer through her Spiro Agnew in a dress act for long.

Is Palin smart? Smart only goes so far. In a President, I want genius, not smart.

Response to Willy

To Willy Morgan

Your claims that John McCain is not a war hero etc because Vietnam never attacked us and was not our enemy is misguided at best. There is no doubt that communist expansion in the 50s and 60s was a grave threat to the USA and the free world. I applauded JFK for trying to stop it and I applaud John McCain for his actions. Willy you see JFK would vote for McCain. Harry Truman would vote for McCain and FDR would be voting for McCain this year..McCain is as close to the old time Dems as anyone. This is not my fathers Dem party now..

Tokens

Shallow as usual, this writer cannot resist morphing women into fantasy figures. They are much easier to digest and control within the psyche that way.

Glad That was Cleared Up

Evidently, Sara Palin has the Mormon woman vote locked up. Who'da thunk it?

educated beyond her intelligence

Camille makes no sense. Palin is a creationist and believes in the Rapture. In my book that makes her a dummy. And Camille is educated way beyond her intelligence. She does not belong here in the company of smart people like Greenwald.

Nothing can cham=nge my vote for Obama.

If nothing could change your vote for Obama, you are a mindless idiot who has no idea why you are supporting him

Palin and the Debate

Palin was absolutely more entertaining then Biden. But that hardly means she won. She was more watchable and fun.

Anyone can create a loud personae if they are so inclined (and it helps to be pretty to not turn everyone off). Add in a ton of energy and a strong work ethic and you have a pretty good cocktail. That is no secret. It works for men as well as women. And yet she still lost. Vapid goes farther in the Pop world where the demands are much fewer.

-------------------

I don't think there has ever been a big problem between working women and homemakers except at some sort of academic level. Certainly not out of the coastal echo chambers where is where I live. The only time I ever heard complaints like that were from homemakers who complained that working women didn't think they were good enough. But yet, as a working woman, I never heard the other way around and any sort of "trashing" of anyone else was on a personal level. ("I don't like so and so because...." ... NOT because so and so was a homemaker). As a result, I don't beleive the letter from the woman with the kids who took all sorts of taunts due to her living the life she is living. I suspect there are more personal issues in that story.

No mystery to me

@Gemimail:

"I have read every letter posted on this article and am completely flabbergasted. Most of the writers seem to have had good educations and can write a coherent sentence so what excuse do you have for your intolerance? Many of you say that Camille should be banned from this site and then attack her because she dares to question the way you think. "

Actually, this is typical. I first crossed paths with this tribe circa 1968, at University of California, when these were the people who grabbed the mike at peace rallies as they used the cause of the moment as an excuse to shout everyone else down with their Maoist techniques.

In their hearts, it's still 1968. The Sixties Maoists still relentlessly poison every issue they touch. Remember this when they try to strip the credentials of scientists who disagree with their interpretation of weather data. Remember this when you deviate in the slightest from their interpretation of feminism.

What crap!

Is Camille Salon's version of Bill Kristol? Salon has been an oasis of well-written, thoughtful opinion. When I want to read faux "balanced" crap, I'll go to the New York Times' or Wall Street Journal's Opionion pages, not pay to read this.

Self-created?

Paglia must be living in a cave. Palin is mouthing the Republican/Rovian talking points they put in her mouth. What is one creative original idea Palin has had? Also, Paglia doesn't give one example of something smart Palin has said. Palin has said many, many dumb things on the record that anyone who is not dazzled by her looks and phony accent would realize.

Mr. Morgan and soldiers

Mr. Morgan's remarks about John McCain "deserving" his torture, since he participated in that conflict willingly, deserve a reply from a non-heroic Vietnam vet, some of whose classmates' names are on that big black wall.

Kinda reminded me of that dopey 60's folk song about The Universal Soldier, who really is to blame. It indicates the abysmal, total disconnect goo-goo liberals have with reality and the nature of human life. Ordinary people just sit around and say "..oh, if push comes to shove, I'll decide then if I feel like being part of my country's defense". One wonders how this would have worked in, say, The USSR in 1941, when about 2 million people died in the first two weeks. See, dude, even though most wars are conducted by old men, contrived by them, there are ofter times when jacking up your sack and understanding that it matters not how it happened, but that it did and is happening, is a fact.

Of course, the other well-known fact is that doubtless the self-righteous Mr. Morgan and millions of others during the 60's did and continue to gloat with sissy pride about how THEY opposed Vietnam from minute one. Of course, these disingenuous, today plump, affluent and cozy folks, always conveniently omit the major source of their courageous stance: they...didn't...have..to...go anyway! Age, gender and the "special" college deferment, which freed up Jose, Tyrone and Joe-Bob to do the dying, left them with lots of free time to toke down, hook up, party and in their spare time, wage angry protests. And you know it, too, don't you, smug smartass? John Kerrey's a big dope, but I will always give him credit for actually going and saying he was very uncomfortable thinking that because he was rich and white he could sit it out while others less fortunate got to come home in body bags. Ms. Paglia did nothing more than reflect the simple, common feeling every schoolchild knew when I grew up: almost every freedom you enjoy in America was earned for you by young soldiers, Marines et. al. lying face down in the mud. Now go have some more Merlot and put that Obama sticker on your Volvo.
