  • How sad.

It is so sad to see people turn from Christianity and a loving, merciful God and replace it with art, nature, or whatever they happen to enjoy. I love art. I love nature. But they can never fill the void in my life that is filled by the Holy Spirit. Knowing that I am a sinner but have been forgiven. Knowing that this life on earth is only a brief stop. The hope for a better tomorrow that Athiest, Agnositics, and others will never know.

I wish people could all sit down and have a private conversation with themselves and figure out why it is they cannot have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Is it because they don't want to be held accountable for their actions? Is it because they have been brainwashed by the liberal science community and government schools that we are only here because of an accident and not a purpose? Perhaps they had an encounter in their earlier years with a corrupt person who called themselves a Christian.

Regardless, it is sad. Very sad.

  • war and peace

well; brown it in my branigan

  • Thanks to BradHoehne

I would like to thank BradHoehne for responding with substance to Camille Paglia's column. I'd be interested in her reply, if any. I enjoy reading her work but also have questions about her views on global warming. That's all. Thanks.

  • Religion in Politics - You have got to be kidding me!!!

What happened to the "separation of Church & State?" Anyone who talks about religion and politics together in America is an ABSOLUTE IDIOT!

To even address the topic of religion in politics is meaningless, stupid, ridiculous and hypocritical! It's a diversion from the real problems we face, and look how much religion has divided people historically! Not very smart!!

Leave your religion at home or in your place of worship, not out in public! And if you run for any office, make America your focus, not your personal, biased views of your own religion.

    What a joke!!!

  • For those that folllow Gore and his ilk unquestioningly

You talk about CP not doing any reading or knowing what she is talking about. How about doing some on your own beyond watching Inconvenient Truth. Bunch of freaking sheep is what you all are. I question everything and it seems none of you do.

  • what could CP be?

the first letters were really fun to read but then it turned into the same old squabble.

Why do some of you guys still feel the need to divide the world in left and right? Don't you know it is getting much to complicated for that? CP is living proof of all the "left- or right -wingers" who are so confused that they don't understand their own dogma anymore.

To be against Bush is "left" - Right?

To deny Global Warming is - "right" or could it be --- wrong?

Perhaps just a case of being sadly misinformed?

    - And as CP had to mention Andy Warhol - My dad met him ones and he told him "he was no artist"! So it makes no sense to call CP "anything"!

  • To those that follow Gore and his ilk unquestioningly (fixed link)

  • Probably too little to late, but I'll post anyway

With regards to anthropogenic climate change, after reading through all letters posted by 9:10 on December 13 I found none pointing out the obvious contradiction between CP's call for better scientific and technical education on the one hand and pooh poohing humanities ability to affect the global climate by giving the example of volcanic gases. As one (or more if I missed someone I apologize) letter writer pointed out, human activities generate more than 2 orders of magnitude more CO2 per year than volcanism (ref. http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/climate_effects.html). I find it bizarre that one can decry the scientific illiteracy of the American populace and then present such an egregious example of suffering from the disease themselves and still be regarded as intelligent. Or to put it in simple terms, there'd have to be 100 times as many eruptions (of the same magnitude as currently seen) every year for the foreseeable future for volcanic gases to have an equivalent effect on atmospheric composition as human activity (nature 0 - humanity 1).

And to the other letter writer who posted some offhand (and innumerate) quotes pooh poohing the possibility of human induced climate change. Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen by a factor of 2 since the beginning of the industrial era, there are no scientifically credible theories for CO2 sources other than those due to industrial activity to explain the increase. That's not an off the cuff qualitative quote, that's a quantitative fact and hardly comparable to the linoleum on the kitchen floor. It's taking a 100 story building and adding 200 more.

Ultimately, it's depressing to see legalistic arguments (only in a court of law can one successfully prove 1+1 is not 2) offered in a scientific debate, and often by people who decry the lack of scientific literacy of the general populace.

  • page after page, letter after letter

I've been reading Paglia for 15 years and enjoyed her first Salon column back in the 90's. She was one of the reasons I became a regular Salon reader. Back then, Salon seemed to embody more of a heady and free-wheeling spirit.

Fast-forward to the present, and yes, Paglia is back, offering political and cultural insights in a loosely-structured blog. As usual, I read her blog and then scroll through about 5 pages of the letters. As usual, the letters have a mind-numbing consistency, a positive dislike and disrespect for Paglia, page after page, letter after letter.

As usual, I wonder if I must be an anomaly among Salon's readers for continuing to be amused by Paglia's insights. Confused thoughts run through my mind... How could so many people hate a writer so much? She must be striking a chord. Why wouldn't they just ignore her if they hate her so much? Why do they bother to write in, en masse, every month? What happened to Salon? What happened to Salon's readers?

Surely these letters represent a phenomenon that is totally out of proportion to whatever impact the blog may have.

Actually, the implications are not good for Salon. I take a completely different approach than most of the letters. Most of the letters say, Salon, deal with this, get rid of this writer.

I say, Salon, wake up to what your readership has become, what you have become.
