Letters to the Editor

You're right, she's terrible, destroys what you love about the place.
So leave. No one will miss you. Do you not get she's a founding member, thus her politics and stance are in synch with the ideals this place was founded on?
Of course you don't. Too bad. You didn't know. There's the door. We won't miss you.

so full of herself
It's official : Camille has JUMPED THE SHARK. My student made a movie. Nightline wanted me. I got Andy Sullivan in a pinch way back when. I discovered Mitt Romney. Blah blah blah. She's like that knucklehead Niall Ferguson pontificating about how 'Sacha' (Baron Cohen) was such an amazing student of his at Cambridge. Typical star struck academic.
-
when I use the term hit a nerve I am referring the the feminist reaction to Sexual Personae
this was/is a substantive issue, but I doubt very much that any new content is likely to be added to the discussion after all this time. At the same time nothing has been resolved and there is clearly lots of emotion still attached to the issue, but this doesn't mean that it is not a substantive matter.
-
Why! Why?
She's like sitting on the couch with a self-obsessed great aunt who hands you an amazing treat for every hour you're prepared to sit there listening to her talk about herself. Could Salon also present an edited version of her column -- even just bullets? I find her style so tedious.

Response to Margalis
"I've never understood why Salon has letter pages when neither authors or editors bother responding at all."
I've read Salon for many years and I've written for them twice. When I write an article, I make it my business to respond to non-snarky letters. I too don't get why most of Salon's writing staff seems stuck in the paper publishing mode of barely engaging the readership on its letters pages.
Unfortunately, the number of snarky responses to decent responses is dishearteningly high. There're only 168 hours in a week, who wants to waste time on that?
Plus, there's always that censorious streak of "how dare you publish this, I'm canceling my subscription!"; these are usually the people who hate the religious right. Hey pot, you're black too...
All that said, Ms. Paglia had a few decent insights on men and their emotions, but her work, like her topics, is just fluff.

OMG!!
This is the best Valentines present ever!!! Welcome back!!

The verbal tics and cliches of the right?
You mean like Rush Limbaugh saying that he tells people not to kill all the liberals, leave enough alive so that we can have two on every campus, living fossils to remind us of what these people stood for?
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,982270,00.html
And then after Limbaugh makes that genocidal statement Bush calls him a "national treasure".
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=24842
Calling for the death of your political opponents is just "tics and cliches", right?
-
What were you THINKING?
Congratulations, Salon. I didn't think you could do it. You've actually got me seriously thinking about not renewing my subscription.
And mind you, I've been a paying subscriber from the first - AND have given several gift subscriptions, besides. From the general reaction here, it seems I'm not the only one who's less than thrilled by this idiotic decision.
What were you THINKING?
-
Camille, ad nauseum already.
Please, please, please just shut up. Anyone who writes about herself "bursting" on the national scene does not deserve an audience bigger than a select group of indulgent friends.
-
Oh, please ... not here, not now.
The response to her return is both voluminous and hilarious. The letters are better than anything she has written. For that reason alone, her hopefully brief return will have been worth it.
This piece is such incredible drivel. All of her words add up to absolutely nothing. Why does this egomaniac think we care that she told the fast food folks about Anna Nicole? Why does she think the race of those she told matters? Was there some deep sociological message there?
My books, my theater experience, my student who never forgot what I taught him. Spare us all.
We have enough narcissists in public life. Bring back Molly.

Arianna beat you to the punch
Camille, you must realize things move much faster since you left Salon. Your critique of Obama as all generalizations was trumped over 24hours before your return.
See here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/wheres-the-beef-ii-t_b_41054.html
Here, Arianna accuses those who make this claim as simply unwilling to read.
This does not pose well for an academic...so get on it!
-
why do people take this woman seriously?
So, 15 years ago she said one relevant thing? Now she kisses up to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity fer Chrissakes!! Whatever credibility she had from 15 years ago is loooong spent, used up, gone.
I dunno though. Maybe the editors of Salon care more about generating hundreds of letters than they care about quality journalism. Yeah, that's gotta be it. Because that is the only way publishing Camille Paglia can be considered a success.
-
Idol
She's at least entertaining and interesting....
at least a small counter to hannity/rush/o-really?
-
Well
I used to think she got most of the vitriol sent her way mainly for being an outspoken woman. But I was off the fence after reading her column where she basically said that it was Matthew Shepard's own fault he got killed because he dared to hit on a straight guy. That kind of blame-the-victim mentality is not the kind of discussion we need to add to public discourse.
-
So, If I Pony Up the Subscription Fee...
... will she leave for another six years? Very ingenious, Salon, I think you've finally hit on something.
-
WTF ?
Everytime Salon publishes something about this loser the letter writers come out in force. Listen to your readers, editors. Get rid of this pseudo-intellectual bullshit.
-
salon the shark jumper
The week's not even half over & already you've described Obama as "uppity," and prominently featured the anti-feminist, anti-liberal, & anti-intellectual CP on your home page.
She's exactly why I will never subscribe to Salon. I really do not get your twisted fascination with her. It's too bad, because I used to devour Salon daily. But now I just do a quick scan & head over to crooksandliars dot com.
Now the quick scan is a waste of time.
Goodbye, Salon. Enjoy your love-fest with CP sans moi.

The 90s called.
They want their irrelevant hack back.
-
Paglia, ooh, she's so brave! Salon, it's so transgressive!
"And nobody -- not Hillary, Obama, McCain nor Anna Nicole -- can escape her level gaze"?
What's the big deal? These people are all in the public eye, relentlessly written about, scrutinized, analyzed, debunked, skunked, and pilloried or sanctified. As for Anna Nicole Smith, putting her in this list is more proof that salon has become corrupted by 24/7 news and deserves to be the next target of The Daily Show.
