Letters to the Editor

YAWN
Paglia is boring.
Your letters are boring.
Nobody reads books anymore anyway.
Public intellectuals are so 20th century - like trolleycars and bi-planes.
Text me when Paglia releases something I can play on my Wii.

Outdated references do make Paglia interesting or original. Just dated.
Candy Darling? I had to look that up.
Seriously. If Paglia can't reference anything that happened in my lifetime, why should I care about her.
She's old and boring and all her references are woefully out of date.
Who cares about old movies? Who cares about old books?
The past is useless and she is part of it.

Camille Who?
Sorry. Never heard of her.
But her article was a snore.
What's the fuss?
-
Wow!
I just sifted through some of these letters, and I have to admit, I don't understand the particular focus of the fury.
I get haaaaating Paglia...but why are so many panties so twisted simply because she has a column again?
She's a pundit! She's not a member of Congress voting on the future of social security. Your quality of life is in no way imperiled by Ms. Paglia's existence.
You don't even HAVE to read her...if you see her name, just don't click.
It's not like she's your Great Aunt Betty who has to be driven to the podiatrist twice a week...her words can easily be avoided.
So...WTF?
Oh, and BTW: contrary to what seems to be popular belief, a person can conceivably love both Molly Ivins AND Camille Paglia. We feminists are large and contain multitudes.

For those who don't "GET" why we wrote to complain
We're complaining because CP is part of what's wrong in our country now. She's an apologist for the right-wing, yet claims to be a liberal. She constantly trashes gay people, particularly gay men, and yet she's a lesbian. THAT gets her far too much airtime, just like it does for Andrew Sullivan. So, the so-called left is constantly being undercut by fools like CP, and the causes even most of her fans seem to be for are being undercut by her. She gets airtime because the media, and apparently Salon, who many of us pay to read, think she's just precious, or whatever mindless accolade they want to assign.
She's not a contrarian, whatever that's really supposed to mean, she's just a professional offensivist. She only exists to offend, not to enlighten, she does not make one think, she just offends with her malevolent tripe, she does not have original thoughts, she just looks for a view and spouts whatever the opposite of it is, often while saying she's part of that view!
Having your position damaged over and over by people like CP, the media that's still full of "he said/she said" equivalencies for every position, and a pundit class that is largely made up of fools is a reason to be angry, because that's one of the main reasons we're in the place we're in today.
Like it's been said many times before, if you're not angry, you're not paying attention. And that's putting it overly nice.

JimR!
Time to hop out of the kiddie pool, young man. Forget Paglia. This Max Frost attitude of yours will not serve you well in the big, mean, world. Launch your weapons from firm ground; study up; get the arcane references. You need them to matter.
Best,
Scott

A Rose by any other name...
Contrarian, offensivist, loudmouthed schnook, what ever you wish to all her, you can't deny she does it well.
If she wasn't acheiving her pointed aim, why are you writing?
You folks are so cute when you get all worked up.
What are we at now 452? Looks like someone in ad sales is getting a bonus this year...

Not such a good start
Camille--
You are all over the place; it's difficult to keep up. And your presidential endorsements--Edwards? Romney? I don't get it. Obama needing more seasoning is a cop out. Why doesn't Hillary need more seasoning, too? Does she qualify for the presidency because she was married to the president? Why is she more qualified than Senator Obama in that regard?
I think Salon should rotate guest columnists from its reader pile.
Starting with me.
-
Asshattery
So why are you above-the-fray wankers even bothering to write about how annoying people are who bother to write?
Me, I'm beyond caring about either Salon or CP. All I care about at this stage is seeing if we can get up to 600.
-
Ron...
As I said, I understand disliking her.
I think that if one took a poll, one would find that most people agree with you.
But you say "she does not make one think"...and that's not true.
She makes ME think, often BECAUSE I know she's going to offend people like you. I have to check myself to see whether or not I agree with her.
She's one of the few people who can't be counted upon in that regard: sometime I want to cover her mouth with duct tape, and sometimes I want to cheer and scream in support.
And the part I STILL don't understand is this: how does she damage your position?
Who has ever refused to take you seriously because they're so busy dogmatically parroting Paglia?
She has no actual power.
As far as I can tell, she's never influenced an election.
I can tell that you find her hypocritical, and that quality angers me as well when I spy it. But you & so many others seem to be using your personal revulsion as an outlet for your "outrage" at the hypocrisy of discourse where it actually counts.
All Paglia is doing is saying "hey, here's what I think, and because I believe it so passionately, it must obviously be true!"
Making her the poster child for the evils of punditry is just silly: the Nancy Graces & Bill O'Reilly's of the world have daily access to people who DON'T think.
Paglia now simply has weekly access to people who do.

Give Caesar her due
Camille's main reason to live was Sexual Personae (God, what a wonderful book for an English major to discover in the 1990s!), but she apparently can still drive over five hundred of you stupid fucking idiots into a pathetic whining frenzy, so she's as relevant as ever.
Welcome back, Camille...Please get back to hammering away at the ivory tower, it's still such a sad mess in there.
