We used to feed a stray cat that hung around our apartment

She had been abandoned by the previous tenant. I tried introducing her to our cat who lived inside with us, but he freaked out, so we just kept feeding her outside. She was very sweet and very hungry.

One night I heard screeching brakes, then a light thud and a sharp high cry, followed by a car receding into the distance.

She was in the road, still warm and quite still. She hadn't had a very happy life, but under the circumstances, we had made the good parts of it as nice as we could.

The strange thing is, I still think about her once or twice a year, even though she was only a stray, never had a name, and died years ago and thousands of miles from where we live today.

All life is brief, and precious. Savor it while you can.
