The trouble with John McCain

Nobody is anxious to see another oldster dithering in the Oval Office.

The letters thread is now closed.

It's not his age, it's his attitude

I am not so much worried out his age, as I am worried about the negative and deceitful campaign that he has approved to air on TV. If he is conducting his campaign this way, how will he handle his administration. We don't need another 4 or 8 years of deceiving the American public.

McCain's brain

There are a number of theories that can be invoked to explain why the McCain campaign is the series of train wrecks that it is. Here is another opne: He finished 894th out of a class og 899. In other words, even in his best days, now behind him, he wasn't bright. Incredibly courageous, yes. But he isn't a prisoner being subjected to pressure. He is a candidate for president. Does he have any rains at all?

McCain's not the only one whose memory is failing...

"I stood watering the flowers this morning and then went upstairs and made my bed, two minimum-wage jobs that I am not well qualified for, apparently. But there is yet time to learn. As long as your mother is alive, you are still young, and mine is holding steady at 94, a tall tree shading us from mortality. Whenever I need to feel youthful again, I can trot out to Mother's and there is my high school graduation picture on the wall, the solemn self-important youth of the spring of 1960, who -- so long as I stay away from mirrors -- I maybe still am."

I watered my north Texas pepper garden today. My mother died in March at 96. She left me enough to shield me from mortality for a while. To feel youthful again, I ordered a Nissan GT-R; World's Best sports car according to Road & Track. I'll be MC and DJ at my 50th high school reunion in September in Virginia; Annandale '58.

I welcome mirrors and photos; they show me as an elder of the tribe.

Isn't your dating a few years off? Class of '60 would make you two years older than me, not 1.5+ years younger.

Raging against the dying of the light in my own way. Oh yeah; gotta get that radar detector installed in the GT-R...

ReverendZafod, if you do your math correctly, you'll see that class of 1960 is correct. GK was born in 1942. In 1960, he was 18. Many of us graduate from high school when we turn 18.

Oops!

You're right. High school versus college. I screwed up. Forgive an old fart.

Reminding more of us of Reagan

I'm so glad to see more mentions, not only here, but in other articles and comments, of the visible symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in Reagan during his terms in office. McCain clearly demonstrates the same symptoms.

The only problem with this approach is that Reagan is still a god to so many people in this country, especially among Republicans.

Lord save us from another stolen election.

I Honor You Mr. Keillor

Couldn't agree with you more on the above. I don't have anything against Mr. McCain, except his politics of course. I lived in Florida during the 2000 election and suffered through that whole debacle. I know I voted for Gore but then again many of our Jewish voters in Boca were recorded as voting for Pat Buchanan, so I'll be forever disturbed by the what if factor in that election. But finally after all I'd feared from this administration has come true we have a real opportunity to sweep THEM out. Sweep we must I say, with vigorous, happy, and yes, lustful strokes. Women must recognize McCain for what he is, namely a nice guy, a war hero but nonetheless a guy who will pay back his supporters by abetting the erosion of rights intrinsic to the daughters of America. And by that I mean Roe V Wade.

As for you Mr. Keillor I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the pleasure you gave to my father over the years. He never missed a broadcast of yours and we often listened together. He was a fine, well traveled, and intelligent man and I think you would have liked him very much. His name was Frank Chancler and he died nearly two years ago. Thank you for the pleasure you brought to him. You are a voice of reason in the midst of the storms of ignorance and ill humor that barrage us all the more frequently in these troubled times. If I could I would hug you wearing a wet bathing suit.

A Nation With Alzheimers

"Anyone who remembers the Iran-Contra years and the president who couldn't remember is not anxious to see a genial oldster dithering in the Oval Office."

Most Americans don't remember. After Reagan left office they started naming stuff after him as if he was a hero. His VP got elected president. GOPers invoke his name regularly and folks nod their heads in agreement that this was indeed a great leader.

McCain's problem isn't age, it's his packaging and personality. If he looked like Andy Griffith and possessed a b-level actor's skills, he'd be our next president.

BUT

Garrison, some people really DO want this blob in the White House! I did some canvassing for Obama in Virginia, and almost all the responses I got were nasty. I think its the news media. I used to watch CNN, but, they are all over Obama with any bad news they can find, harping on tiny tiny things. And they give McCain a free pass. I've no idea why.

Susan_G Is Right

The real problem is both leaders and a nation who collectively forget all sorts of things others remember.

Tech bubble of 2000 pops? Just a repeat of what happened to radio stocks in the 1920s. Housing bubble pops, financial folks are looking at window ledges? Repeat of the 80 years ago. Gasoline prices skyrocket? 1970s all over again. Same causes, same cures, same forget-history-and-doomed-to-repeat-it storyline.

Read Jimmy Carter's "Crisis of Confidence" speech today, and it sounds like it was written last week. But it's 29 years old.

The problem isn't that McCain is a certain age. The problem is that he obviously hasn't learned from the past.

Thanks, GK, for reminding us.
